We actually have had some decent songs in our selections that could have done better (maybe not top 10!) such as Until Tomorrow, Freedom Hearts (although the revamp of Never Give Up On You was a big improvement on the original) and Legends.

Holly’s Bigger Than Us also may have done better as it has more going for it and is less generic.

We need to focus more on song quality and potential… vocals can be worked on before Eurovision and low budget You Decide staging worked on or changed.

I know it’s important a song works live but it makes me think we should consider the song itself more and its potential.

Darline and Asanda’s live vocals weren’t brilliant but they still had the best songs. Lucie and Michael won with the best performances, but not the best songs.

One thing, though. Jan Bors from Česká Televize can do a super low-cost online selections for two years. Maybe BBC could try something similar?

With a song like their recent disco stomper Scared of the Dark, I think Steps certainly wouldn’t come last. The problem with Steps though is that they’re super corny (and I say this as a fan). Their music would be an improvement over anything we’ve sent these past few years, but they also fit too well with our tendency to send pop stars past their charting prime at least some fifteen years ago. We actually haven’t done that in a while though I guess, and the results we were getting when we were pulling out our Blues and Bonnie Tylers ranged from decent to underwhelming.

I wouldn’t oppose Steps. In fact I’d welcome them. It’s just it would be much easier to swallow their fun, campy pill if we were in a less crummy era of terrible entries with results to match. Steps would be enjoyed and mocked in equal amounts, and they wouldn’t probably do much to change our abysmal reputation. They could potentially become a fan favourite though if they went, which would be lovely to experience.

Us every year thinking the BBC will give so much as a phone call to any of the artists who make tabloid headlines by saying they'd do it if asked (alternate caption: all of the big names who think Eurovision is beneath them not being aware that they'll be unequivocally beneath Eurovision a couple years later)

The annual Steps is going to do it lol. I was a big S Club fan, just liked a few of Steps hits like Tragedy... but if they did Eurovision it would be brilliant. I think it'd be a very popular choice with British viewers and obviously they are known in Europe too.

Well said, the landscape of the British/BBC approach to Eurovision has to change before something like Steps could be properly accepted.
