Only just gotten time to reflect on all this online!
Pretty good national final, at least based on past experiences. Hopefully the high viewing figures compared to the channel's slot average will be viewed positively. It was great to have a national final that was, yes, light but without any joke songs! Perhaps we can start to build up to a bigger venue and moving to BBC1 over the next few years (I'm not worried about non serious ESC fans voting if we don't have joke entries)!
I think overall the best package won. My order changed slightly. I thought Matthew's song was better live but was still my least favourite. Dulcima I genuinely thought had audio problems :/ ...with Darline I really enjoyed the song and performance but thought the vocals weren't great. Karl was perhaps my best overall improvement, I thought that with a revamp it could have done rather well in the end. Bianca killed it with the best vocals and I was really torn between voting for her or J&J. Unfortunately I think the verses to her song let her down in the end... A little reworking and she could have walked it. J&J do need to improve on their vocal but the performance was full of energy and you could just connect with them. I think all-in-all they were the best overall option.
Interestingly, I watched the national final with 2 casual Eurovision 'viewers' (as in, they usually watch the final and sometimes vote but not always, and never watch the semis or national finals)... they thought J&J were the best by far and quite liked it... labeling it as 'something you'd hear now' (meaning a current pop song).
In my opinion our winner is a really good pop song - not to everyone's taste (haters gonna hate) - but if it was played on Radio 1 as the new single from 1D, Union J, 5SOS or The Wanted I would be desperate for it to go to Eurovision (listen to any of that stuff, even from the past year and this fits right in, it's definitely current). I really think that with a little tweaking, strong vocals and a good performance this can go top 10 for our best result since Jade in 2009... It's not looking like my favourite this year, but seems destined for my top ten (perhaps top 5) and it's certainly a song and act I can get behind!
Along with the newer approach, and hopefully a good result in Stockholm over the next few years we can build-up ESC again in the UK and really drum-up quality acts... and perhaps a winner! I'm giving J&J all my support - if not yet quite right for victory, this is a huge step in the right direction, that should only be encouraged and supported by fans.
