Unfortunately things wont change unless RTP gives up the contest to another channel that isnt as antiquated and restricting as they are.

Sad news however I won't miss RTP (RTP≠Portugal) the same way I didn't miss RTP in 2013, mainly because RTP doesn't send good, modern or memorable songs so as a result their songs have a tendency to end up as "filler" between more superior songs. Which is a big shame because by all the things I heard Portugal is a wonderful country too bad they are represented by a bad broadcaster.

I dont see why they need to take a year out to make 'big plans' Surely they could have stated before now and had a big revamp. the portugese finals have always been a bit bland. I have high hopes for 2017, I think it will be more international.

Its too late now. RTP has really messed up the show for everyone for the last 6 years and now Eurovision interest in Portugal is at an all time low. The TV ratings prove this, no one watches it anymore.

Oh no... I'm devastated!

I was happy today, with my family on a nice vacation through the mountains, and when I get to the hotel. BAAAAAMMM!!! A HUGE slap on my face! RTP is just the worst! Time to get a new plan for ESC? I can do that in 5 minutes or less!!! What RTP needs is to RESPECT the fans and ESC followers!

I'm soooood mad!! T()T()T()xcryxcryxcry

I love Portugal in Eurovision, but I am not surprised at all by this decision. Hopefully they will return in 2017 with something up to date yet enough Portuguese to stay authentic.

RTP's official statement:

"RTP states that they will not participate in the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest that will take place in Stockholm, Sweden on 10th, 12th and 14th May. After a long and ponderated discussion about our participation in this event, and at the same time, the need to create and replace new programs, RTP's board of directors decide not to put the ESC on the broadcasting plans for 2016. After a handful of decades taking part in this big event we will make a pause, but a return in 2017 is promissed."

So they basically did the same statement as they did in 2012 when we withdrawn from the 2013 ESC. Back then they also said they would work on new plans for Portugal's return, but we all now how that ended up. Let's hope this time they will actually work hard to give Portugal a good result in 2017.

I can't say I enjoyed most of Portugal's songs, but some of their entries were relaxing, other than most of other competing songs. That's why I will miss them in 2016.

RTP must hold a grudge against Sweden

To be honest, I'm sad and quite surprised they considered withdrawing so soon. I'm not gonna lie, Portugal is (unfortunately) not among my favourite countries in Eurovision for the reasons we all know, but when they're not here, I miss them. :( I want them to shine so bad, I hope they will really walk the walk as well as talk the talk in 2017.

TBH I'm not suprised. This year's FDC was awful, one of the better songs (if we can say that) won, but it was again screwed with a new arrangement. A great potential, but they refuse to try harder.

That's a very sad news for me. I started to watch Eurovision in 2008 and I really liked their songs only in 2014 and 2015 (I appreciated 2008 and 2009, tho) but it's a country that I always want in the Eurovision, even if their national finals are creepy as hell and their songs are far from what is actually popular in Portugal...

I hope that their promise for 2017 will become concrete. I would like to see someone and something who is really near to your taste and charts, portuguese friends.

I hate when a country withdraws (even if its a country that I am not a huge fan of).

Aside from 2008, I wasn´t really a fan of Portuguese songs, but I was always opened up for a new attempt (where eventually they could find a great song that could blow me away).

And now they withdraw again......

Please, let this be just for one year only! Don´t turn into another Croatia or Slovakia!

Not wanting to dance anymore, but I must dance
Sad to hear this, but if RTP is giving up on Eurovision, they might as well give it to a broadcaster that's willing to put the effort into it that's needed.

I liked most of the Portuguese songs from the past few years. TBH, I wish Sweden would withdraw instead. I disliked or even hated most of the recent Swedish songs.

What RTP needs is to RESPECT the fans and ESC followers!

One unfortunate rule of democracy is that it adjusts to the majority. As some people mentioned, the number of people following ESC in Portugal is low, therefore, Portuguese TV has a valid reason not to participate. And there's huge money that needs to be spent, so they're not going to fulfill the minority's wish.

Well they had the most unoriginal, most boring, most uninteresting and most forgetable song and performance in Vienna, so I am not surprised at all. I mean, let's be real, Moldova was horrible too, but at least they gave a great performance on stage and Portugal was...just...there... They could at least try.

in general, I wont miss them.

At least Sweden is putting some effort on their songs for Eurovision, unlike Portugal. HUMQNS was good on FDC this year, but later production even more ruined the song. Not either Nelly Furtado would've saved that song.

Agreed. Sadly, it was a sinking ship from the begining.
