It's official. OGAE Portugal had a meeting with RTP and RTP is withdrawing from the 2016 ESC.
However, they said that they will surely return in 2017 and with a new strategy to give Portugal a great result. Let's see if this will be true or not.

Goodness, the first big name to fall. Is it that surprising, given their run of results? I suppose the restructuring was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Let's hope they are back next year!

Well, these are really bad news, I'm a little bit disappointed. Unfortunately, Portugal is one of the most (or maybe the most) underrated country in ESC, so i understand their decision about withdrawing from the 2016 ESC. Portugal had many amazing songs, even masterpieces, with good live performances... I really hope that Portugal will reach the grand final in 2017, if they returns, Portugal deserves it.

I was hoping for no withdrawals this year but oh well :( Looking forward to seeing if they finally go for a new approach in 2017

I absolutely disagree. In the last few years RTP's work in regards to Eurovision has been terrible and they have no reason to complain about our results. If they come back in 2017, I hope they will have a completely new approach to the contest.

Sad to see them go, but honestly not surprised after the news of them missing the deadline. I recall them trying to enter JESC last year and missing the deadline there as well (could be wrong). I'm happy they're going to complete restructure everything, because honestly it's just one big massive mess at RTP and it needed doing a long time ago.

EDIT: Also, Portugal withdraws again when Sweden hosts. They have a habit of this.

If Portugal ever won, do you think Sweden would have a "year off" too? :p

The last really compelling song Portugal brought to ESC was "Senhora do Mar", even though I really enjoyed last year's entry. As much as "Quero ser tua" was fun, it fell really flat. They do need a radical change in the selection process.

No loss, Portugal contribute very little in terms of song quality. They should come back when they plan to take it seriously.

I can't say I'm sad, Portugal isn't my favourite ESC country and their entries are usually meh for me (I think Suzy's song was kinda cute). I hope they do come back in 2017 with a great song ;)

Portugal...so similar to Croatia in eurovision...in almost everything...I so have an accomplice with this stupid (non care) decision...:( I just feel big potential in Portugal and just can't wait of year for their explosion at eurovision...because Portugal can, has potential! Please come back in 2017 immediately...or even change mind if possible for 2016!

If i may suggest...

The TV broadcaster should INVITE a few artists/composers that they think are the most suitable for eurovision
(just like in EMA 2011 & 2014)
