I was talking about non-eurofans like my Mother and Grandmother. Do you know any Portugese Eurovision songs that made an impact on the general public.

Oh sorry, didn't notice that.
Well, basically few songs in general, have made an impact outside of the Eurovision Bubble.
And i am not sure if it is a benefit to be remembered as "The Monsters" or "The woman with beard" ?

I'm sorry because i believe in this contest the more, the merrier. But Portugal never surprised me since i started to watch contest every year back in 2007. They look like they take music seriously, but the contest? Not so much. They need the Azeri ambition a little bit.

And pay Swedes to compose their ballads every damn year?

The more the merrier? Not really. They should've withdrawn long time ago instead of not taking the contest seriously and keep sending crappy songs. I believe quality over quantity and prefer 35 good songs to 45 mediocre songs.

Portugal has debuted in Eurovision Song Contest, when almost nobody of people here were born. Definitely they remember times, when ESC was a totally different thing and it's utterly underestable, they're not crazy about getting good results. If we have participants like Azerbaijan, I would like to have countries like Portugal too. Eurovision with all participants only targeting for win, would turn ESC into ordinary sport event.

That's not really how it works, though: one country sending mediocre songs doesn't force another, usually-good country to send something mediocre as well, so having more mediocre countries join or leave doesn't affect the quality of any of the other countries. A more appropriate comparison would probably be something like '20 good songs, or 20 good songs and 20 mediocre ones', in which case I think I'd prefer the latter.

So sad about Portugal :( It's like a given that I hate whatever entry they send  But I will still miss them, it doesn't feel like "all Europe" will be included without Portugal, a bit like how it used to be when Italy wasn't in.

They're a veteran country of the contest so I totally get what you say. Even if a lot of their entries are tragic.

Yup! This is my view on Portugal in the contest - I've never really loved any of their entries, but I'd always like to see more countries in the contest. Having a couple more mediocre songs doesn't detract from any of the good ones, and it just lets more people participate, makes it a bigger event, etc. Plus there's always the hope of a country getting their act together after years of unremarkable entries and surprising everybody (eg. Austria 2014). Would love to see them back!

Seriously though, I don't think they'll be missed too much more or less than any other country. It's true that only the hardcore fans (well, that and Portuguese fans) will really miss them, but then again I think it's only the hardcore fans who'd be aware of a country's ESC record anyway. I mean, even if Sweden or someone were to leave the contest, casual fans probably wouldn't be aware enough of their history in the contest to care about it more than they would about Portugal.

That was a truly iconic moment. Up there with the end of Greece & Cyprus's 12 point swap. I'm surprised Spain never invaded. Although, Andorra pulled the same stunt in 2007 and they're still there.

Great news everyone!

RTP will send a delegation to Stockholm to follow the full Eurovision Song Contest, composed by RTP's director of programmes, as well as people from the main recording companies operating in Portugal and two television production companies, Shine Iberia and Fremantle, that produce, amongst others, the Idol format, Got Talent Portugal, Masterchef Portugal, etc.

The goal is to keep contact with the EBU and SVT and to prepare the return of Portugal for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest.

Hopefully RTP will finally learn their lesson!

I just hope it's serious news and not an April fools joke, like Esctoday Chinese interval act.

Yeah, I doubt it's a real news, most likely it's an April Fools' joke
