Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

Australia is not really a threat to the 'actual theme' and the spirit. But if Australia becomes a permanent member, that gives every country in the world the right to try. And, sorry, but I really don't want some of them (ie. China, USA).

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

I don't hate. I just want to see Eurovision to stick around the actual theme and not lose the spirit of being "Eurovision". Besides, Australia in the contest is all the way unfair to European participants. If they prequalify, there are several European countries who never reached to final or do very rarely. Isn't that ironic not to see European countries in final but Australia? If they don't pre qualify, then they will take a ticket from an European country everytime they qualify. Isn't that ironic, again, to European countries?

This!!

Its an absolute joke they've been allowed to participate to begin with. I mean whats to prevent any country wishing to join, surely Qatar needs a place now, they did speculate in the past about wanting in? Oh wait they're not white and I'm sure that is a factor when the EBU makes these ridiculous decisions they've been so adamant China isn't entering but why Australia allowed to.

I'd prefer if they stayed that the EBU dropped their fee so they had to go through the semi-finals, or at least prequalified but only voting in one semi.

Maybe Australia should send Samanta Jade with her hot hit 'Sweet Talk' next year?

maybe because:

A European Australian is a citizen or resident of Australia, who has ancestral origins in any of the original peoples of Europe.

Since the beginning of British settlement in 1788, people of European descent have formed the majority of the population in Australia. The majority of European Australians are of British - English, Scottish, Welsh or Cornish and Irish (Anglo-Celtic) - ancestral origin.

In 2010, it was estimated that around 74% of the Australian population were Anglo-Celtic Australians. Other significant ancestries include Italian, German, Greek, Dutch, New Zealanders (European New Zealanders), Polish, Maltese and Croatian.

Today, Australians of Anglo and other European descent are the dominant majority in Australia, ranging between 85-92% of the total population.

Historically, European immigrants had great influence over Australian history and society, which resulted in the perception of Australia as a European country.

Most Australians are descendants from European countries. My mother was born in Ireland and my father was born in the UK.

In a country of 23 million, there are over 2 million European immigrants that were born in European countries now living permanently in Australia with Australian citizenship.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

So are a ton of South Americas and you can be sure the EBU wouldn't rush to welcome Argentina into the contest.

Plus I don't really care who once was European back in the day and who has great grandparents from wherever, Australia isn't in Europe end of story.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

Really hope we welcome Australia back next year - it was great having them in the Contest this year and they were definitely one of the best competitors! Put in far more effort than many European countries we could mention :D

Like I said this year, I'd absolutely adore to have Kylie, Dannii Minogue or 5SOS on the Eurovision stage :D :au:

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

It was nice to see Australia this year in the contest, but for now it is enough ..

first the country is far from Europe and will not work the best

anyways if it is again next year i will not mind ... but i believe best to stay only for Europe

but was nice to see live the ESC on Tv even it was early morning

Preach! If we follow the illogical descent/ancestry "logic", the whole American continent could potentially take part as well. Are they Europeans as well? No.

It's pointless to try to explain what's explainable. Australia is like the farthest country from Europe in the world, still some people are convinced they're legitimate in a European contest. :?

Thank you!

People who obviously don't care for the EUROvision concept want Australia in. It's scary that some think that Anglo = Europe. It's part of European culture and heritage sure, but a former colony is NOT Europe and that's a fact. Australia had their "anniversary thing", now it's time to go back to normal as EBU promised.

Again nothing against Australia, it's probably an awesome country, but there is absolutely no fairness in keeping them in ESC on the grounds of having the "right" language and belonging to the (according to EBU) the only culture that matters. If the argument for Australia staying is the European heritage, then all the Americas should join aswell, if the argument is that it's a former colony of a European country then heck almost all of Africa and large parts of Asia should be in aswell.

For me, :au: is a bipolar country (with no offence), they think that they are Asian too!! For that reason also they join on the Asian Football Confederation 9 years ago due the lack of competitiveness in Oceania. So, its not estrange that want to do the same in Eurovision, and who knows that they will try to join on the UEFA one day too?

At least i'm proud to say that i'm Latin American with European background, but that does not entitle me to say that I am just European in the wrong land. In regarding in the other thing, i don't have nothing against Australia too (I love this country & their people), but mixing then in Eurovision is really a crazy & dangerous thing for Europeans and non-Europeans. It will then come halfway of the world want to participate in Eurovision due that Europe colonized half of the planet, and because then the event would be not called Eurovision anymore.

Its time for EBU sooner or later to create a Worldvision to fit the Australian interests & non Europeans too, and leave the Europeans with Eurovision as regional song competition :geek:.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

From EBU official website:

With Australia taking part for the first time this year as part of the Contest's 60th anniversary celebrations, Paul Clarke from EBU Associate Member SBS shared his country’s experience of the event in which their artist, Guy Sebastian, placed 5th:

“We learned it’s the best community of music producers and music audiences in the world and we were really grateful to take part,” he enthused.

“For us, Australia was riding on a wave of growing excitement for Eurovision and we wanted to deliver something authentic so we chose a big artist. If we were ever invited again we’d go for an even bigger one – dream big – the show is so big.”

Regarding social media’s role in promoting the event Paul Clarke added: “We’re in the business of telling stories - Eurovision is a story. Twitter is a wonderful tool for broadcasters– it lets us know what audiences think of our content.”

I get where you're coming from, since I certainly hear the 'Australia is part of Asia' thing thrown around a lot, but... nobody really thinks that (apart from perhaps some Asian immigrants). Politicians like to throw around the phrase because it helps us look good in trading relations with neighbouring Asian countries, and we sometimes join Asia in sporting contests due to logistics (eg. cost of travel for players), but I don't think I've ever met an Australian who considered us to be part of Asia in a cultural sense. Culturally, linguistically, ethnically, etc. - we're far closer to Europe. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean we should be in Eurovision - people are free to reach their own opinions regarding that - but as a country our identity is far more European than it is Asian.

It is confirmed now that Australia is going to participate in Junior Eurovision 2015.
I think this is something that we should have in mind. ;)

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

Yeah, it's a question of time. Minutes, hours, days but they will be in Stockholm. No reasons to join the Junior Eurovision without being in the major contest as well...

I'm not against Australia participating, but I'm really going to be pissed off if they don't put them in the semis
