Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

I'm not against Australia participating, but I'm really going to be pissed off if they don't put them in the semis

Prepare yourself  They were already entitled to vote in BOTH semis this year - something that no country was ever able to do - so everything's possible with the EBU.

I wish they wouldn't participate anymore, if your ask me, but as it is, I prefer them being prequalified: they're already utterly off-topic in this contest, so they'd better not start stealing a ticket for qualification from a EUROPEAN country that can't rely on novelty/exotic-friendly votes.

Eh, hopefully if we become a regular contestant we'll lose both the novelty vote and any possible anti-vote over time (though I presume the first of those two is larger). If we participate in the long term, I'd rather end up as one of the semi-outliers (Turkey, Israel etc.) than get special treatment as some kind of permanent guest country. That'd mean going through the semis - and yes, we might take a spot from another country, but that's really no different to if any other country pushed up the numbers from 40 to 41 or whatever. I do think that being able to vote in both semis was pretty unjustified, so if we were to participate again I'd like to see us end up with the usual rules.

Essentially I'd just like to see us continue as a regular country, with no special treatment for better or for worse. Aside from hosting in the case of a win, I guess, since hosting in Australia would obviously be logistically and financially difficult.

Where are all these rumors coming from? I heard no official statement that Australia would be invited this year. Thus, I am not waiting for any confirmation of participation as from other countries. You can't confirm if you are not invited.

Eh, I think it's about a 50/50. No official word that we'll be in it yet, but also nothing saying we won't be; essentially it's the EBU's decision, and they've been rather quiet. Our broadcaster clearly wants to participate again, and we're still putting effort into Eurovision (ie. entering the Junior contest this year as well).

Certainly not confirmed that we'll be participating, but we've got threads for less likely countries (Morocco, Lichtenstein, China, Tunisia...) so this can't hurt.

I feel like they'd be permanently slotted with the Big 5. I mean, maybe they might be put in the semis, but if the former happens, they should be allowed to only vote in one semi-final. That was the only thing that really bothered me about Australia's participation last year.

Would that involve us paying the same increased rate as the Big 5 though, whatever that is? Our broadcaster might do it for a while, since we're trying rather hard to participate again, but I'm not sure we'd pay it in the long term. There's a running joke in Australia about how little funding our national broadcasters (SBS and ABC) get, at least compared to the commercial channels - though that might be the same in other countries too, I suppose. If we were to join the Big 5 permanently without paying the increased fee, then I think that could be seen as more unnecessary favouritism, similar to being allowed to vote in both semis, and I think it's best to avoid those kinds of things.

Of course, that all depends on us actually being in the contest at all - it's entirely possible we're just back to being a regular non-participating country from 2016 onwards. Or we could just have a vote without sending a contestant, or there could be some other way of participating... the EBU's been rather quiet on the topic lately.

*Channel Ten laughs maniacally in the background*

Something I didn't even think about when writing that was JESC. If Australia is allowed to permanently take part in both JESC and ESC, those expenses will add up real quick.

I guess, in the long run, it would be better to just stick to the semis.

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

I'm always asking for someone like Courtney Act (not very known in Europe but popular in USA after RPDR and of course australia after Australia Idol) and i find THIS on reddit :

The question was what Courtney Thinks about ESC and that's her response

"OMG! I F#CKING LOVE EUROVISION! Unfortunately Australia was just a special guest in Eurovision for 1 year. Alas. I totally put a bid in though. In fact I submitted some of the songs from my EP, Kaleidoscope. Guy Sebastian and I were on the first series of Australian Idol and he is an immense talent, he did such a great job. I bumped into him in the elevator in Vienna and we had a little catch up."

Re: AUSTRALIA 2016

Just checking in to say that EBU better keep their promises that it was just a one-time anniversary thing if they aren't dubiously doing this just to promote Anglo-saxic English language western music and countries in ESC... it's already hard as it is for them to refer to the "rules" of Eurovision if they are to break them themselves to give Australia some sort of special status...

But I already have the worst feeling about this coup to sneak in the country permanently...

Wasn't their 2015 participation one time thing? It should be

Yes it should be, but EBU doesn't care about their own rules and promises if they can get another western/anglo nation onboard.
