TRTs reasons for not going to Malmø 2013 really are the wrong ones. I understand and respect the broadcasters that have chosen to withdraw out of economic reasons.
If TRT want to change the rules they better work for a change in the system in other ways than withdrawing. I will really miss Turkey, though, one of my favourite countries.

This is another shock, I've just read it and I can't believe it that Turkey won't be in this time...  what the heck!?!

(Edit: Their 'reasons' don't convince me at all; pff...sorry, this is just childish. :?)

Meh, so many bad news already for 2013...

So I guess being a whining baby pays off then? TRT: "Do it our way or else we'll withdraw!..." ... EBU: "Ok, you'll get a spot directly in the final so you won't risk a non-qualification" :?

It's odd though, wouldn't Russia be the first in line to get a Big 6 status then?

I competely agree!!! What happens if Russia wants to be a part of the big ones??? Should we have big 7??? Then also add the host country if it's not of the big 7. Then it should be 8 countries directly qualfied to the final. I think this would be a really bad thing for ESC. If so then I think countries will really start to withdraw from the event.Came one Russia and Turkey are among the countries which don't need this. They almost every year qualifing to the final. And I actually I don't think it's very good to be in final without semifinal. I think it's an disadvantage!

To be honest, I'm against this 'big' status of some countries. Ok, they pay the most, but it's song contest and the participation in the final has to be deserved by singing well a good song, not with buying this spot with money.
And sure, the big countries give a lot for the contest as money, but if we talk in proportions, many other broadcasters are under more financial pressure. I mean, it's not like that the budgets of BNT and BBC (for example), are even comparable, but apparantly we have to pay only 4 times less than what UK pays, which is strange.
And when we have this Big status, Turkey and Russia have to be part of this group, or else it's double-standard - only the Western countries have this right, the Eastern are not so important.

Is welcome Russia joining us to make a Big 6, in fact I think that'd very much be a good idea. However Turkey, no. That'd send out all the wrong signals, saying to any country oh so long as you give us a bit more money, you can pre-qualify too! Then what will we have, the Big 10, Big 20?!

It's a dead end, nobody in EBU will take a risk and add another country to Big-5, cause in this case other countries are going to want the same, it's gonna be a mess.
Nobody will also cancel Big-5 and make those go through finals as well cause some of them will just get mad and withdraw, i'm sure Italy is going to be the first to do it.
So...nothing's going to change whatsoever, why bother making fools of themselves demanding such things in the first place xsleep

Actually, it's all about that: money in exchange for "big" status. But it's not a bit more: it's a lot more. So, I don't think we would ever have a Big 10. Having more "bigs", however, would allow EBU to decrease the fee for the others, thus allowing more countries to join the competition. xcheer
Or we could use another system: EBU could sell, every year, the 5 "big" slots with an auction, so one year we could have :uk: :de: :fr: :it: :es: and another year :ru: :tr: :uk: :de: :se:, and so on.
Or we could get rid of the whole "big" system.

And it how qualifiers used to be until 2008.
I totally support that one;

I'd actually prefer this, and tbh I think the "big" countries would notice that they'd benefit from entering in the semis aswell, also it would push some countries like the UK to work harder in this.

No we dont want the Big system abolished, but the point is that it must remain "exclusive", and so it would work for Russia to join, but Turkey no.

I'm not a pro Big system, but wouldn't we be direct to the final, France would have withdrawn since a looooong time ! It's just not possible to imagine broadcasting a Eurovision on France 3 without France. The problem is that when you are not in the finals, ratings are very low. But, in big countries like ours, the ratings are just a real big money deal and it would be bankrupcy ! :D So would have not been qualified one year, we would have withdrawn automatically, and UK would have done the same and so on, because it would have not been rentable.
Remember that only 2 countries didn't broadcast the special show Congratulations for the 50th anniversary of ESC, UK and France !

Yeah, there's very little chance that the United Kingdom would still be participating without the pre-qualification.
