Don't like the song, but I admire him of his stage presence. God or no-god, overrated or underrated, I think it would have been better to let someone else take part at ESC. He had his wonderful Moment in 2009, so why coming back when he knows he won't reach that top again? xshrug xthink

I am actually afraid that he might win again, because people really adore him, but I prefer anyone to win, just not him, the song is just soooo bad, and it is more suitable for JESC.

Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

VikingTiger Alexander Rybak is 31 and has already won Eurovision. He may have come across as "charming, fun and boyish" 10 years ago. The time after his Eurovision win, he was frequently seen at different events in Sweden where his selfimage was way off and appeared very much full of himself. Devastating for his career. I don't think the best way to recover from that is trying to redo his win. Instead I think he should move on and contribute to the Norwegian music business, finding his proper place. He seem lost to me to be honest and gives a kind of sad impression.

He is something like Peter Pan I guess, boy who never wanted to grow up, and he never did, It is sad, like you've said. I 've thought that he will do better, with his life and career, he had great potential.

I wouldn't say I prefer anyone else to win except him. There are more terrible songs this year than Norway, I think. At least in my eyes. :D Even though I don't like the song, Rybak has at least some kind of individuality whereas some other songs are just mediocre and average.

This song is not a masterpiece, but I must say, that the show is really good. I see it in TOP 10. I like it!

Of course is top 10! This is Rybak! This song is terrible (worst this year in my opinion) but people gonna vote for it because is Rybak! Even winning is possible actually, if juries like it!

So how many winners did we have with a terrible song winning only because of the performers charisma?

He is doing worse than JOWST in spotify and norwegian charts. International Juries in MGP did not like him that much. He can be lucky if he sneaks into Top 10.

Maybe you are right but back in 2009 he got the BIGGEST win in history of Eurovision! He managed to get 78% of possible points so he propably had something and people voted that much for him! So he propably still has it and on stage he will get a lot of points even with a terrible song!

Sorry neighbors but this is really bad, he WILL qualify due to the fact of being a familiar face and he oozes charisma on stage, and also people respect him for the 2009 Eurovision classic "Fairytale", which while it wasn't my #1 that year, still is one of those rare big moments in last decades of Eurovision winners which created a Eurovision classic, but that aside this song is a bore. To me it's like a bad commercial song, it doesn't have a good hook or something memorable, it lacks personality and melody and quite frankly it's annoying.

It will have an effect of Jacques Houdek, but with better result due to his name, looks and charisma.

Well, I wouldnt say he is waisting his life; I have no clue about his personal life... and a return to ESC really doesnt say anything about one's life does it?

But as for his carreer: I am afraid there are several reasons why he is not a big "star". I would claim that AR is not a great song-writer. I guess Fairytale was a once-in-a-lifetime hit. I have partly enjoyed a couple of his other songs, but none of them reached my playlists (nor the playlists of a majority of norwegians).
AR is a great stage performer with lots of carisma, I think he proved that when he again won the MGP this year. But his songs dont have what it takes to be hits on the radio, streaming or the social media. And his voice is definitely nothing special.

He's songwriting is juvenile at best and directly childish at worst, maybe he shouldn't do the songwriting? He proved that he can compose some catchy tunes, but he should work more with other people I think? As for the comment by lolita that he seems like he never grew up, in a weird way I can get it, I don't know much about his childhood but he comes across as those wonder-children that was "pushed" quite hard from home, learned to play the violin, but on the downside lost some of his childhood which he seems to want to compensate for as an adult. He does has that sort of "childish" way about him, but I could be wrong.

Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

13 horses and pretty much the entire "Fairytales" album is amazing. So is "No Boundaries" especially "Suomi" . I've been his fan ever since he won Eurovision in 2009 and he is the very reason I even got interested in this contest in the first place. Since 2014 or so, his musical career took a different turn (at least to me) and I stopped being a too big of a fan of him. However, I've always respected him for his personality, honesty and idk, being a real artist and a real person, unlike many other celebrities. Yet people here are calling him arrogant? Lmao.

Now, "That's How You Write A Song" is obviously not "Fairytale". No song can be "Fairytale" but "Fairytale" itself. No matter with what he could've come, his performance and song would have been compared to Fairytale. This is why I initially thought taking part again in Eurovision is not a good decision he made. But then I saw his live performance in MGP. And his posts on Facebook/Instagram. He is having a hell lot of fun with this opportunity and he doesn't care one bit to win again or do super good for that matter. He just loves the Eurovision experience and wants to do it all over again in Lisbon (he never quite stayed away from it actually).

I know it's now super popular to bash him, but "That's How You Write a Song" remains a super fun song that I'm sure will be enjoyed by many first time viewers who have no idea who Alexander is, unlike some of you who whine with every single occasion that he shouldn't have win in 2009 and other stuff.

I feel like we're repeating the same discussion "Yodel It" had when people trashed it to no end. Current Eurovision is really annoying. Is it really that outrageous to have fun songs in this contest?

I agree with you, his first albums were great, similar style like Fairytale. I am also his huge fan since 2009, I know almost all his songs, and he is my favorite winner of all time. But his last songs are getting worse and worse, and I think "That's How You Write a Song" is the worst his song actually, but it is kinda fun song. I wish him luck, but I won't vote for him just because I generally like him and respect his talent, and because he is Rybak, song is just not good enough, there are lot of better songs that deserve top 10 placement, this year is strong. :D I am actually quite sad because I would like that his song is better, I would like to support him . ;)

Who whines about his 2009 win? Eventhough it wasn't my favorite that year, I respect that win and I think it won fair and square and made its mark in Eurovision history, but that's just me.

As for this new entry of his, I see where your'e coming from that ESC needs fun, I completely agree with you and the fact that everyone suddenly turned "music snobs" and "soooo serious" after Salvador's win is just laughable to me, however this entry, imo, is not fun, not even remotely fun, just like that youddling mess wasn't fun either, now I dunno if "fun" or "annoying" are synonyms.

But hey, taste differs of course, and I while I agree with you in point, I don't agree on this particular entry... as for his 2009 victory song, who trashed it really? I would like to see those comments because taste put aside, saying he didn't deserve to win back then is kind of surprising to me considering he had the whole package of an ESC winner.

Agree completely with bolded, it is too laughable to me, too. I don't understand how Eurovision world and so called great music taste changed overnight. I don't remember people were wild like this and snobbish.

Absolutely, everyone become music snob after that. That explains that this year Israel is the fanbase favourite. xcrazy

Haahahaha, but 'cause it is "smart song", this year fans don't want anything that isn't smart, serious, or snoozefest, like all these three things garant quality this year, because of high level of taste. :D

C'mon, clearly you must have seen the comments around here and other places that songs are "too gimmicky" (Israel gets alot of criticism like that too), "too Eurotrash" etc. ... suddenly everything needs to be so darn serious... Israel might be a fan favorite, but I'm talking more of a general attitude.
