Re: FRANCE 2018
I'm curious to find out why you would have thought i'd be into it? I just find the whole thing very plain and basic. Perhaps if I could understand the lyrics there might be some added weight to it (as I read there's a moving story behind it) but for me it's not transcending the language barrier. It sounds like countless other fairly understated electro pop songs, and it's not doing anything to grab me, melodically, sonically speaking, as well as performance wise.
For me, who has read French a few years in school, but have forgotten most about it, I still can understand some of the lyrics without looking it up. If you are like me, read just a little French or perhaps have learned some Spanish or Italian, I think many of those people might feel that connection. I mean I guess many people know that "Je m'appelle" is "My name is" in French and can suddenly get to know this little girl in the song without knowing the full story. Hopefully, there are commentators that also might tell the viewers about the story. Now that I have looked up a translation, it makes me connect to the song even more, but I didn't do it for the semifinal and still find the connection.
Also, what people have to remember when judging this NF is that it is a small stage, it wasn't even live in the semis and many things will probably improve for the winner in may. Madame Monsieur will need even stronger backdrops, to make the story even stronger if they win. If Lisandro wins, then he needs backing vocalists and a few dancers to make it work in Lisbon. If Emmy would surprise and get the ticket, then she needs to loosen up big time, move around more, connect with the camera and maybe have something special, but not too extreme to look at behind her. Things need to improve...but I am sure that France, whoever wins, might fix it in time for the final on the big stage in Lisbon.
