Here is a quote from BBC Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills regarding the difference between the UK and other nations regarding Eurovision.

“[H]ere’s where we differ [with other nations]. The thing is, Israel will just send their best popstar. We can’t do that because we have global megastar popstars. It’s a catch-22 situation because people that don’t really understand it, just go, ‘get Adele to do it,’ but it doesn’t work like that! In Israel they’ll send Noa Kirel who has won a ridiculous amount of MTV awards and is a fully fledged Israeli incredible pop star. We don’t have that privilege, or we’re not in that situation.”

Can't believe I'm agreeing with Scott Mills but yeah he's right. The UK can't send their biggest popstars compared to many other countries at Eurovision so that puts the UK at a disadvantage. The BBC are gonna have to work it out on how to send experienced, charismatic performers who can sing well live but yet at the same time no-one has really heard of them. Good luck BBC,

I don't know why we can't just take a risk... send a metal group, send a pop girlie with a heavy dance break, send an ethnic sounding song (times have moved on since Touch My Fire)

We have a diverse population in the UK and with that comes a diverse culture of music!

I absolutely hate them for coming up with such utter nonsense.

There's a huge variety of different artists willing to take part between the likes of Adele and Michael Rice.

Hes responding to the fact that some countries send their biggest singers, because a lot of people say "Just send Adele" as he says. Hes saying it's obviously not gonna happen. Ofc you're right in what you say that there is a whole lot inbetween to choose from, but hes also right in what he says that we don't have the luxury of picking our very best. The thing with it though, is that we don't have to and previous Eurovision results show sending your best doesn't always pay off.

Yeah, you're right about it - I wrote "them", though - I hate people for calling "to send Adele" as well - I mean, Eurovision is all about diversity and it's totally fine to send newcomers but Israel was a huge exception this year - they've sent five newcomers in a row before they asked Noa to represent them.

If a well-established act comes up with a great concept/package, recent years have shown that it indeed pays off most of them (e.g. Marco Mengoni, Noa Kirel).

If you ask a has been to sing a mid-tempo track without any memorable melody, shaky vocals and boring or tragic performances, it's cleary not going to work out for you (Bonnie, Engelbergt, Blue, to some extent - but they got a Top 5 in televoting - people from the British media/Eurovision tend to forget about it).

Ethnic in eurovision surely means a showcase of traditional cultural sounds how was touch my fire in anyway british?

I mean it was Scott who found Sam. We struck absolute gold with him. I agree, I really don't think he's wrong there!

Good luck BBC. Please please get it right, we beg. If they can do it with JESC and find Freya, I better hope they can do it with adult ESC going forward :)

I just remember the slightly creepy Terry Wogan quote when Sertab Erener started her song in 2003 - "bring me the bellies"

2 years later.... Javine did

The UK doesn't need to send our established artists when we have fresh UK music artists making songs like this. The BBC just have to find them and convince them to represent the UK. Sam Ryder showed what it can do for your career, his songs are still being used on UK adverts on tv these days.

It's just down to the BBC to make it happen.
