Well, Eesti Laul isn't as good example as Estonia's old format Eurolaul because now they apparently offer the ESC ticket as a side bonus and are trying to turn it into an Estonian-only alternative music event, therefore most songs with actual ESC potential get eliminated at the jury stage. But an open call for songwriters/singers to take part would be a good idea. But isn't this "X-Factor Eurovision" idea basically the same thing that Germany did this year? Since it seems to have worked out well and Germany is also a Big 4 country where well-known names don't want to take part of ESC. Maybe it could be a success in the UK too.

I think we'll have to wait and see how Germany perfom on the night first. Interestingly enough, the selection idea for Germany this year was dreamt up by Stefan Raab because of his good performance in 2000. Perhaps it would work, at least a better idea than what we have currently, but I would always be biased in the favour of a fully open contest rather than picking both voice and song seperately.

Yeah, I guess that would be the best option. I personally am so bored of all those singing reality TV shows and I haven't even watched any of them. The thing is that these shows seem to be really popular in Germany and every Idol winner or Popstars band rises to the top of the charts at least with their first releases (I am sort of in touch with German media), but of course that doesn't guarantee anything in Eurovision and I have no idea how popular these shows are in the UK. Besides Estonia has had an open contest most of the time, so I guess I'm used to this format.

Songwriter for the United Kingdom's Eurovision Song Contest entry, Pete Waterman spoke out on the Ken Bruce radio show this morning about voting before the songs are performed and went on record to say he can't see why Azerbaijan is the favourite.
During the broadcast, Ken Bruce explained that the televoting window increase would help smaller countries that rely on the revenue from calls. Mr. Waterman however was adamant that "you can't really call it a song competition if you haven't heard the songs when you vote".

When asked about his view of the competing songs, Mr. Waterman said:
"To be honest, I came last night and saw 12 songs...Josh stands as much chance as anybody. I heard the favourite that everyone's talking about [Azerbaijan], and I'm sorry but if that's the favourite then we have a fighting chance. If that's the best they can do then erm... yeah! Do you know they've spent a million dollars? It's not about spending money. We spent £100".

I don't even like the entry from Azerbaijan, but at least they are making an effort unlike the BBC and Waterman...

Waterman is a bit of an idiot but the £100 thing was a joke. He went on to say they'd spent it on haircuts
Last night during the semi final Pete Waterman said that he couldn't see the appeal of Azerbaijan's entry but he wasn't really slating it or anything. He was just giving his opinion. The only other thing he said was that there isn't really a 'stand out' entry this year and he's right. He would HAVE to say that we stand a chance because that's his job isn't it? It's his song afterall...

It's a bit funny for me that the UK songwriter said that, since I like Drip Drop mainly because of its songwriters who I think can write good songs (including Drip Drop).

i look on these threads, provided by esctoday, as appreciation threads..

i dont see the point in going into threads of other countries song to criticise their song..

i did go to the portugese song thread to congratulate them on a wonderful performance in the first semi final..

if josh does come second.. then i hope it will be to portugal.. it is about time that country won the competition..

i thought the second semi-final was fantastic.. probably the best semi-final ever..

however nice, good, fantastic, those songs were.. i still prefer listening to josh ..

initially i preferred alexis's version of 'making your mind up'..

it was only when i watched it back on youtube that i fell in love with josh's performance, and the 'look' of the production..

it was very humorous.. and just made me smile.. that 'making your mind up' performance is one of my favourite uk eurovision moments..

josh is a likeable person.. a very good singer.. so even if you dont like the song.. i hope you will still give him a vote..

I'm sorry but no matter how good the performer is the song is what actually matters and you lack in my mind a good one.
I wish you luck, but I will not vote for you there are other performances where I enjoy both the performance and the song.

What would be the point of having a forum if people were to all agree? It makes things boring!

Also on the point of performance, I agree that songwriting is more important. However, this doesn't stop performance itself from being crucial: in my mind Slovakia threw it away in the first semi-final by being under par.

This is IMO the worst song tonight (and I like the new version even less), but I wish Josh won't get the last place, cause he's done a very good work and he's so sweet. He's not guilty of the song he was given!

I'm sure they meant the people who actually go on and on bashing other entries, not just stating that the song is not their cup of tea.

I think Josh hates the song but he is too nice to say anything against it. I hope we dont come last for Josh's sake  He deserves a few points. He has worked much harder than Jade ever did last year and yet he's had much less of a chance of winning due to the crap song :x

I actually don't think and hope that it will come last. Maybe 23rdish. Surely it'll beat the likes of Russia???

Whatever happens - Josh you're amazing!!
