I'm guessing that it's very easy for a song to become overhyped in Sweden because Melodifestivalen is such a large event.
No, it's just the Swedes being idiots. Every single year, the Swedes think we're going to win the contest. Even with the garbage that was known as "Las Vegas".

Swedish songs are usually good quality though. I can't remember the last time that I really disliked the Swedish entry (I wasn't too keen on 2005, but it was OK). I actually think your song has been a bit underhyped this year.
Underhyped my tuchas. It was voted as the top entry in the Scandinavian poll. I made a bet with all of those overhypers that if Anna actually ends up with the most points among the Scandinavian countries, I would eat a hat.

The Swedish "experts" and Norwegian "experts" all think she'll do well. There was one saving grace though: Kayo (of Afro-Dite) was a good enough expert panelist for the Swedish "Inför Eurovision" panel that she actually said that she thinks that the song isn't that good and that it might actually not make it out of the semi. Well done, Kayo!

Just wanted to add that most of us totally accept the criticisms made of our songs and singers when they are justified and fair. What really irritates me is when people assume that our song will be crap before it's even been chosen or they automatically rank it last before the National Final!!!
It's no different than people ranking, oh, Turkey, Greece and Armenia pretty high even before they've selected their songs. It's based on past song selection history and voting history.

Sure, but that doesn't mean that it's not really irritating
I will correct myself, the Swedish song has been underhyped amongst UK fans. Usually, the Swedish song is amongst the absolute favourites here but not this year. No-one has really mentioned it. I still think it's a dead cert for the final though ;)

Good luck on saturday!

I still don't care much for your song, but the perfomance is not bad and I do hope that eurovision can help Josh get where wants to be.
Can we hope for a return, but with a better song?

in my opinion, you have a truly memorable, really sweet and very uplifting song..
you have also been a fine ambassador for your country and a great credit to your family
if there was an award for the nicest singer(s) you would get my vote..

Crap song
Good singer

Don't hold out much hope for this, but we have to fly the flag...

Don't think it will do a Jemini (we might have to call in favours from Ireland and Malta though...)

Haven't been able to log in as a member for a while, but have still been "shadowing" the boards! :) Hopefully I'll remember my log in details and be able to be on here more from now on :)

Anyway, can't wait until Saturday, will be good! I'm just dreading the usual sunday morning media criticism if we get a poor position (which I do expect although I don't mind the song...).

Anyway, come on ESC, let's have another good show and good luck UK!!!

Well, you can always contact me (as you just did ;) ) and I'll help yah out.

Unfortunately "That sounds good to me" is certainly not comparable to last years amazing entry so I also don't think it'll make it past the Top 20. But I wish you guys the best of luck!

Stop sugar-coating it. "Not making it to the Top 20" (which I assume is what you meant to say since "Making it past Top 20 could be anywhere from 20th to 1st or, more literally, better than 1st) is the same thing as "Bottom 5"! :D

Screw diplomacy and join me in being crass: The United Kingdom is getting Bottom 5 this year, most likely.

I think Josh has a shot at top 10 although I think more likely will be somewhere in between 10 and 20. It is not that bad that it deserves bottom 5. Much better than some other crap we have in the final!

I'm sorry, but that doesn't sound good to me at all.

Last year the UK saw a resounding return to form with a powerful number that regained the country's confidence and enthusiasm as a Eurovision nation. The formula for writing and selection seemed to be a potentially fruitful combination. So did we stick with it?

Hell, of couse not! The perhaps more low-key but still BBC-Norton oriented 'light entertainment' structure when a song was written and artificially worked around the artist after winning a vote is not something I'm keen on at all. The song itself written by Stock and Waterman frankly sounds like the 80s hits they were churning out in the past: nothing new, nothing refreshing, and nothing that makes us stand out as a song on the European stage. It sounds tired, cliched and dreadfully out of date. As a result we'll probably bomb.

Sometimes I wish we could have an open song contest and selection process rather than a semi-internal one. We need variety of songs and variety of artists.

I'm not really familiar with ESC history, or haven't paid attention to the contest that much, let alone to the UK history at ESC, but this song just says "typical UK bottom finishing song" in my opinion. Not that it's bad exactly, but for me it's the same as when France used to send a boring ballad each year. It's just too old-fashioned and it's about time to try something new. I didn't like the UK song last year either but at least it was capable of achieving a higher placing. I think even Andy Abraham's song was more original than this year's UK entry.

I do agree with Samb, and would love to see some sort of contest to find the winner. Like we did in 2009, but perhaps on a larger scale... a "Eurovision X-Factor", but I can't see it happening.

Instead, I can see another last minute preparation for 2011, perhaps marginally better than 2010, but still not what UK Eurovision fans would like to see.

No, I can't see it happening either, but this is an interesting point. I should be clear when I talk about 'open selection' I do not mean something akin to an X Factor-like broadcast. If anything, something of the same format as, say, Eesti Laul. I don't believe we should be picking a voice and then a song. If we have an open contest where artists of all backgrounds can submit a song, go through some sort of jury process, and then a televised top ten or so final, we could be slow off the mark but eventually reap rewards.

As far as the 'big four' have been performing in the past ten years, i'd say we don't have much to lose.

Honestly every year you don't think the UK could get any worse or make any more wrong decitions and they prove you all wrong again.
Most eurovision fans are probably ready to give up on you alltogether...

It would certainly be interesting!

I know that BBC don't take ESC seriously and this is probably largely due to keeping viewing figures up by having what they think is a "typical Eurovision song", but I think that viewing figures would be just as higher (if not higher) if people thought UK had a real chance of winning.

I know that big names won't take part, but if we had a system like your idea and had a good, strong winning song, then people would watch the final in the hope of success. Us brits do like something to support!

Thats a logical infallacy. Would you therefore be suggesting that our 2009 entry was just as bad as say, the five years of entries before it?

No, that one was a pleasant surprise the other ones has not been.
And it looks less and less likely that something like that will happen again unfortunatly.
