There are like, a few thousand Eurovision fans out of a population of 68 million
That's my point. The general populace of the UK seems determined to sabotage the UK's chances at ESC on purpose.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree about Alexis (and Esma too). They were both as tuneless as anything. Josh was the only one in the whole final who could hold a tune.
I already retracted my previous statements on Josh's singing ability. They're still pretty mediocre. Or maybe it's just the song.

Well, maybe it IS the song because I think Josh is a superb singer. I'm pretty confident he'll go on to have a decent career on the stage.
I don't think the rest of the UK population DELIBERATELY try and sabotage our attempts but they don't really care about the contest too much so when our national finals roll around, they will just vote for the most 'entertaining' option. This is partially the fault of the BBC though who continue to promote the contest as a retro novelty event.
All I'm really saying is that there is not a fat lot the real fans can do other than show support for our entry. The BBC will never drop Eurovision because the ratings in this country are pretty stable regardless of how well we do and that is because people tune in to listen to the commentary...

What makes me sometimes feel really tired with the UK is all the complaining they do when they place bad when they to be entirely honest they earned those bad placements.

I hope every year the UK will finaly get their act together and send a good song with a good performer to go with it. Last year was ok, good singer, decent song. This year decent singer, very bad song.

The actual 'proper' Eurovision fans very rarely complain about doing badly because we have come to expect it. People give us a hard time about our songs when there is nothing we can do about it and we seem to be expected just to tolerate it without saying something back. It's really unfair.
We are given songs that are mostly too awful to support (and I won't say we chose them because usually the public choice does not match the choice of the fans OR as in this year and last, the song was chosen internally) and when we DO support them, fans in other countries criticise us for doing so :(
It is very tough being a Eurovision fan in the UK.
By the way, most of the fans here know exactly the kind of thing we'd like to represent us but no-one listens to us. The BBC only cares about its domestic TV ratings and really couldn't care less whether or not we do well. What can we do?

Believe me, I and all eurovision fans who do actually wish the UK well feel your pain.
I do hope that BBC learns the lesson from last year and one from the failing this year, because I really do want a UK entry to love and not feeling I want to pick up a pillow to hide my face in like most years...

I hope so too but I just can't see it happening to be honest. I guess the BBC is just giving the majority of the public what they want - a lightweight piece of entertainment. Our agenda as fans doesn't really fit with the public image of Eurovision in this country which really hasn't moved on from it being all about Abba! The contest has changed but our songs haven't. Oh well, I'm fortunately in the small minority of people who DOES like the song but I know we are going to come last or near last. That's life I suppose :(

Why give anything back at all if our criticism is valid?

Why support the entry just because it's your home country's? I always speak honestly about all entries, including the Swedish entry. In fact, I'm often one of Sweden's most vocal detractors when we send garbage and/or our entry is being ridiculously over-hyped on the forums. And you know what? I'm Swedish!

I do not support garbage, even when it's been democratically elected. Why should I? If a despicable person is elected to be your Prime Minister/President tomorrow, would you support them?

Not support your entry? Not defend the undefendable?

I understand you, for once at least. I'm probably the person that has expressed the most negativity towards Bulgaria 2009/2010. ;)
My tuchas. I was the biggest detractor of Bulgaria 2009! Don't you dare try to steal the title of Most Ardent anti-Krassimir Crusader from me!

To be fair to myself here, I personally don't support the entries of ours that I don't like. I just couldn't bring myself to support Scooch or Andy Abraham. I do actually like our song and singer this year though but I accept the criticisms and obviously respect the fact that we all have different tastes.
I'm guessing that it's very easy for a song to become overhyped in Sweden because Melodifestivalen is such a large event. Swedish songs are usually good quality though. I can't remember the last time that I really disliked the Swedish entry (I wasn't too keen on 2005, but it was OK). I actually think your song has been a bit underhyped this year.
The biggest mistake of the BBC was to move our National Final into a prime time TV slot. This has meant that non-fans will be watching and will just vote for anything funny. I guess they make a lot of money on the votes though...

Just wanted to add that most of us totally accept the criticisms made of our songs and singers when they are justified and fair. What really irritates me is when people assume that our song will be crap before it's even been chosen or they automatically rank it last before the National Final!!!

I've been following the producer's diary on the BBC page, it made me laugh a few times!

I'm hoping next year the BBC gets their act together. A rock song would be nice, something a bit different from the tried pop or ballad formulas.

A message board would be appreciated... No idea why they didn't include one this year. Stingy BBC! :p

Ballads are the best!
If they are good and have a competent singer sure. Otherwise it can be a potential horror show... And since this is the BBC I would bet on horror if they send one :p

What I don't understand about British entries:

You guys have such a diverse music industry which spits out fantastic artists on a regular basis. Often you come around with fantastic fresh, new sounds.
But in ESC we get the same old stuff year after year.

I think that is the same problem that we had here in Germany: Nobody of the important players in the music industry takes the ESC seriously.
And that has to change if you want to be a serious contender for the victory.

But it's not 'us'! If it was up to 'us' we would have mega-stars singing!

It is up to the BBC and the BBC only... they dont want to win coz they dont want to pay to host it.
