I was hating Maruv's entry but of course I'm not inspired with current situation. Though I shouldn't be surprised UA
BC is a state channel which didn't change a lot since Soviet Union times. Their shameful slave contract remind us that Ukraine is far from Europe in fact and back to the Soviet past. Am I the only one who don't get why participant in the song contest must be some cultural ambassador representing country's political position? Sounds like a rave 
In this situation every self-respecting artist should refuse to sign also this contract and go to the ESC. However if somebody agree it would be deserved if we stay in the Semi. The only good thing would be is that people from Ukraine will save possibility to vote for their favourite entries (though nobody quarantee that these votes will be reconsidered according to political expediency)

I just thought about how similar this whole thing is to what happened in 2011. The two fan favorites and frontrunners (Jamala and Zlata) were passed up by Mika who was accused of rigging the public vote. All the petitions. The offers to hold another NF. All the outrage. All the hate that was addressed at Mika and her team.
She came to Germany and got 4th place. lol.
Maybe we're in for a similar result?

I was trying to think of a similar situation where the person not going having the public support and the one going having to deal with backlash and accusations of corruption.

Yeah I recall this, it's indeed a bit similar. I still think Mika's producer bought the selection back then but like you said, in ESC it went alright because in the end of the day the vast majority of the audience aren't hardcore ESC fans spending their time on various ESC forums and blogs reading about all this drama prior the contest so they couldn't care less.
Also the year before was shady, when they changed the selection suddenly with the new government and then Alyosha won with a song that was pure plagiarism but she was still allowed to change the song, leaving people with the feeling that they were cheated. But this scenario was almost an annual scenario in Belarus for some time, also Spain had their fair share of shady selections and the past years Romania and most of the Balkan countries and probably others as well so Ukraine is not alone in this.
