I'm so done with work for today so let's make a short summary about
debut in the Olympics
EDIT : I started this post at 18:34 and ended it at 23:03, bless
I'll start with the medals because we need positivity in life :
- Judo serving once again with 4 of our 7 medals, and hopefully it's not the end. For some reasons, people are surprised (both French and foreigners) that in the history of the Olympics we're the second nation that won the most medals after Japan, but let's not forget the Judo Federation is our 4th biggest one after football, tennis, and horse-riding.
The gold from Clarisse Agbegnenou in -63kg was particularly great. She had a lot of pressure because she has been the reigning champion in this category for the past years (5xWC). The final was a throwback to the 2016 one when she lost to the Slovenian, this time however it ended up better for her. When she cried at the end of the match I swear I had tears in my eyes
- We finally got some success in rowing in this edition with the men's double sculls team winning a gold AND breaking the Olympic record.
- Our first gold medal came from a somewhat unexpected place with our fencer Romain Cannone. Our hopes rested more upon his teammates but he had been on fire all the day and beat the big names one after another. We got a bronze in women's sabre too.
- Last but not least, I'm happy to see Althéa Laurin win bronze in taekwondo. She aimed for gold but she is still quite young (19) so getting a medal already is great !
- Not a medal but our basketball team beat Team USA in the group phase and it's been
wild.
Now let's talk about the upsets :
- The biggest one is certainly cycling : on-road, but most importantly mountain biking. We have the current cross-country world champions (senior men and women + U23 women) but didn't get any podium. That's quite a disappointment for the team.
- Swimming. France was a powerhouse in this discipline in the 10's (especially London 2012) but now we barely qualify for finals, let alone win medals. It's not a lack of trying though, we have young swimmers who are hard-working and even improved their personal record at the Olympics, but there's definitely a lack of density right now.
- Despite winning two medals, fencing's track record is not that great. Let's hope the team events will bring us something again
Still, even if they didn't meet our expectations, I am obviously proud of each of these athletes
They don't deserve any criticism, we all have our bad days and unfortunately for them, they either had them on the most important summer of their life or just were up against stronger opponents.
So let's take a look at our biggest chances for the next days :
- Teddy Riner in judo. I'm not gonna show his palmares but still gonna do it : 8xWC, 2xOC, 5xEC. Let's just say that the whole country expects him to bring back gold once again, but no pressure Teddy < 3
- Kevin Mayer in Decathlon, 2016 silver medalist, 2017 WC and world record holder.
- Our sailing team has been doing great in the first races
- Handball and basketball should be able to bring us one or two
Our objective is to reach 40 medals (our record is 43 in
Pékin Beijing) but especially, the goal is to win more gold medals (we got 10 in Rio).
