Cycling and beach volleyball get under way tomorrow - I'm looking forward to cheering Michael Woods on in the men's road race

My most fave was the Portuguese entrance xheya and Dominican Republic's little dance. Kudos for certain muslim countries that allowed women do not cover their heads.

Predictably & logically it was a very modest ceremony and I like it that way. But the speeches of the officials (esp Bach) were like a double sleeping pill, as always.

I really liked the Olympic cauldron... the way it's inside the stadium & closer to people, the design is out of this world and it's very Japanese. I'm happy for Naomi Osaka. I was cheering and feeling her as someone who went through depression and emotional numbness previously. The smile on her face was a perfect ending.

ps. Russian ESC broadcaster, the 1st Channel didn't show Ukrainian team xfacepalm

EDIT: Ukrainians can watch the Olympics on PBC official site. Authorize via Facebook, Google, Apple ID or register on the site and watch the whole thing in 3 players (each shows different events) for free.

German athletes usually starts badly in the Olympics and this years games are no expection to the rule.

Our best medal contender today, the fencer Max Hartung, failed in the Round of 16 of the male sabre event. Our female beach volleyball duet Ludwig/Kozuch lost their first match despite winning the first set and being ahead mostly in the second and third set. Our mixed team in archery lost their first match to Mexico, our handball team lost to Spain after giving them a proper fight.
In the male road race Schachmann reached an acceptable 10th place. The best result today was the 5th place of Christian Reitz in the 10 metres air pistol event but one might have hoped for a medal after he became 3rd in the qualification.

Let's see if tomorrow will be a better day.

One of the early stars in this Olympics is probably the Zambian football player Barbra Banda who scored 6 goals in only two matches (!) so far. That's some insane rate. The Zambia teams seems to be an exciting one, as they are actually attacking instead of exclusively focussing on the defense. They contribute a lot to the female tournament which is overall a fun one so far. We had some entertaining and high quality matches (think of the Sweden - Australia match that just ended) and also a proper upset (the USA defeat). I hope I manage to watch some more of the matches in the following days.

Kosovo took more olympic medals as Finland would take these olympic games.

Edit. Estonia too.

Gotta add some positive highlights for the German team:

400m freestyle swimmer Henning Mühlleitner broke his personal record and qualified for the final with the best time of all participants which makes him suddenly a strong medal contender for the final that's gonna take place tomorrow. I don't think he can get us a golden medal but if he performs as good as he did today it might be enough for silver or bronze

The male hockey team won its first match against Canada comfortably with 7-1 goals.

our male gymnasts did mostly a good job in the qualification round I think

both our male Tennis doubles won their first match and qualified for the Round of 16.

I follow the volleyball competition, no big surprises there. Iran beat World Champions Poland 3x2, but it wasn’t an impossible result.
ROC team led by Finnish coach Tuomas Sammelvuo, beat Argentina 3x1, next round we’ll have a South American derby Brazil vs Argentina xheat

Women’s volleyball starts soon with all the eyes in the stars Zhu Ting (CHN) Paola Egonu (ITA) and Tijana Boskovic (SRB)

Mühlleitner eventually become 4th and won the beloved wooden medal

but nevertheless we won our first two bronze medals:
Lena Hentschel and Tina Punzel won it in the Women's synchronized 3 metre springboard and our women's team won bronze in the archery team event. Since our fencers are out early again and we don't have a contender in the female road race again I think that's it for today. I am worried about the fencers performances. We already failed to win a medal in Rio and we might fail again in Tokyo. That's a shame because we used to be a successful nation

Edit: suddenly we might still have a chance to grab a medal in the road race, let's see

Moroccans a bit unlucky today haha :

Houssam Elkord doing an amazing game against the world's N°1 in fencing but sadly a bit insufficient, still did an amazing performance !

Nada Laaraj playing against the world's N°2 in the repechage in taekwondo and also losing

But well I still have hope, we'll get a medal !
