I didn't post here the last few days since I had a bit of an Olympics blues after the male swimming 1500m race in which Wellbrock were about to win gold until the last 50 metres and finished "only" with a bronze medal because that American guy, that nobody ever heard of before, has got a tremendous final sprint.
But since then, a lot of things happened.
Zverev won
Gold in tennis yesterday, as expected I would say but you can never be sure in Olympic finals + a win against Djokovic can lull you into a false sense of security. But he controlled the match right from the beginning and gave us a great display of his skills and his agility.
What followed tonight was the most successful day for Germany so far.
Actually, the morning was rather disappointing as our shooting star (literally: our star in shooting) Christian Reitz missed a medal in the 25 metre pistol event and therefore the last chance for us to win a medal in shooting. He won gold back in 2016 and tonight he won the qualification so expectations were rather high.
However then our bicycle ladies started their Olympic mission in great fashion. Our ladies sprint duet Friedrich/Hinze lost their final race to the Chinese duet by only, I think, 0,08 seconds. But keep in mind the Chinese girls broke a world record to beat us. Anyway, we got
Silver
More impressive however was the team pursuit performance of our girls, in which we broke a World Record ourselves and won the qualification by a landslide. Tomorrow we will face the Italians in a semi final race (we beat them by over 4 seconds in the qualification run) and if we beat them we would possibly get the dream final against the team of Great Britain.
In the afternoon we managed to win three medals within one hour.
First of all Julia Krajewski and her horse Mandy won
Gold in individual eventing, then Aline Rotter-Focken won our first female
golden medal in Wrestling ever and it was her last fight as she had decided before to finish the career after Tokyo. In Germany we have the saying
Man soll aufhören, wenn's am Schönsten ist which means: you should leave on a high (or highest) note. And she definitely does
A short time later we surprisingly won our first medal in Athletics. Our discus thrower Kristin Pudenz went into the final as an underdog but broke her personal record whereas the former dominator
Sandra Perkovic had a bad day and Perez couldn't repeat her performance of Doha 2019 either. And that is how it came that Pudenz won
Silver
Tomorrow might be even more successful for us. I expect us to win around 7 medals tomorrow.
