Two bronze medals today for Germany.
Rebensburg in giant slalom (unexpected, because she wasn't in good condition before the Olympics) :p

and Riessle in nordic combined....
But that race was a big fail for Germany... Three of our athletes (Riessle, Kircheisen and Rydzek) were on rank 2, 3 and 4 short before the race was over and they still had chances to win gold medal. Then they impeded each other, so Rydzek fell on the ground and drop behind and finish only on 8th rank. Kircheisen also stumbled and finish only 4th. Riessle saved at least the 3rd place. xfacepalm
However, in team competition our athletes can't disturb each other, so I'm confident, that we win at least silver (it will be a fight for gold against Norway)

I'm happy for American skaters winning gold last night. Their free dance performance was breathtaking! On the other hand, nothing else to expect from the pair dancing together for seventeen years. :] I am also glad about Deividas and Isabella. They did their best, performed quite well, and so let's expect for better results next Olympics. ^^

Yet another silver, Mike Riddle took it in men's ski halfpipe. The women's 3000m short track relay team got one earlier today (they were bronze, but were bumped up to silver after the Chinese team was disqualified for an impeding violation)

It has seemed like Norway didn't understand the concept of skiing in warm weather, because we've had severe ski problems in cross-country and biathlon. But the weather has changed in Sochi, and suddenly the Norwegian skis are working like they should. Result: Gold for Jørgen Graabak and silver for Magnus Hovdal Moan in Nordic combined, and gold for Emil Hegle Svendsen in biathlon. :D Also a bit funny that all 3 of them are from either Trondheim, or very near Trondheim. :)

So watch out Germany, we're coming for you.

7 Gold (Emil Hegle Svendsen, Jørgen Graabak, Kjetil Jansrud, Maiken Caspersen Falla, Marit Bjørgen, Ola Vigen Hattestad, Ole Einar Bjørndalen)
4 Silver (Ingvild Flugstad Østberg, Magnus Hovdal Moan, Ståle Sandbech, Tora Berger)
7 Bronze (Anders Bardal, Heidi Weng, Kjetil Jansrud, Magnus Krog, Martin Johnsrud Sundby, Therese Johaug, Tiril Eckhoff)

xcry :D

Maybe the team competition in nordic combined could tip the scale whether Germany or Norway will finish up on first rank in medal table
There are not many occasions for us to win gold medals, so I see an advantage for Norway
Still 3 ice skating events, so maybe another 3 golden medals for Netherlands
I don't know.. Just wait and see!

One of the TV experts in Norway went thru a lot of potential gold medals for each country, and this is what he said:

Norway (currently 7) could get 13. Cross-country team spring (men and women) and women's 30 km, biathlon mixed relay and men's relay, and the nordic combined team competition (this is gonna be a thriller)
Germany (currently 8) could also get 13. Nordic combined team competition, biathlon mixed relay, slalom men and women, and 4-man bob.
USA (currently 6) could get 14-16. Women bob, snowboard parallell slalom and giant slalom (he didn't specify gender), men and women hockey, men's giant slalom, women's slalom, and skicross (no gender specified).
Netherlands (currently 6) will get 9, there wasn't any questions there, but only 2 more from speed skating. The last one was from short track.

USA could be a strong competitor, and Norway and Germany can't both win the nordic combined team competition, or the biathlon mixed relay, so it's gonna be exciting. :)

Canada is already guaranteed a women's hockey medal (I hope it's gold), Kaillie and Heather are our best shots in women's 2-man bobsled, we always do well in curling so if the women beat Great Britain and the men beat China we have 2 more shots, there's the men's long-track team pursuit in speed skating (Canada's the defending champions), ski cross and snowboarding. So don't count us Canucks out yet even though we're cornering the market on silver right now

Canadian medals as of 2/18:
Gold: 4 (Justine Dufour-Lapointe, Charles Hamelin, Alex Bilodeau, Dara Howell)
Silver: 9 (Chloe Dufour-Lapointe, Denny Morrison, figure skating team, Mikael Kingsbury, Patrick Chan, Dominique Maltais, Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir, women's short-track relay team, Mike Riddle)
Bronze: 4 (Mark McMorris, Denny Morrison, Kim Lamarre, Jan Hudec)

Germany (currently 8) could also get 13. Nordic combined team competition, biathlon mixed relay, slalom men and women, and 4-man bob.

Well, I wanna state my opinion on this...
I don't agree with that.
in the biathlon mixed relay we are just medal contender (gold is not realistic), but it depends much on the shooting. On the track we can't compete with the world class athletes atm.
In slalom men competition, Neureuther is indeed favorite for gold medal but he is still a bit injured and nobody knows how big will be the handicap
4-man-bob... I doubt if we even win a medal in bob this time. We have problems with the material... the slides are very slow, they simply don't have speed. In 2-man and also in 2-women competition our athletes are like a half second behind the best, even when they come through without any mistake.

We have maybe better chances to win gold in women's Snowboard parallel slalom and in women's team sprint it's also possible, even if we are not favorites.

German media called it "black tuesday" last week, when Denise Hermann, Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle and Claudia Pechstein all failed to get a medal. So what could this day be called?

First Stefan Luitz missed the very last goal in men's giant slalom, and he was 2nd close behind Ted Ligety. Then Patrick Bussler became 4th in men's snowboard parallel giant slalom. In addition to this both our cross country sprint teams missed the bronze medal, although they were both 3rd with a gap between them and the upcoming athlete.

Very bad in the men's competition, because Tim Tscharnke falled and it wasn't his fault. :(

Anyway congrats to Finland, for winning the first gold medal since 2002. xcheer I'm not angry about Jauhojaervi, because this could happen in a sprint, although it was really annoyed.

EDIT: Seems like Team Germany protests against the finnish team, but it was announced that this protest might not be possible, because the action wasn't on the finish line. Of course I'm german and I'm very disappointed about the result, but I hope the protest won't be successful.
