Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

At least, Céline had a career in France and was well-known accross French-speaking countries, that's why Swiss composers choose her to represent :ch:. Vanilla Ninja, though, had zero connection and it raised criticism (despite the good results)...
Well, the manager of Vanilla Ninja was born in Switzerland....
Did Céline have a big career in France before representing Switzerland? I thought her big breakthrough was with "Pour que tu m'ai es encore" and that was years later (94 lf I remember correctly)

Serhat could bring a good result for San Marino as JESC 2015's San Marinese artist did.

The fact is that San Marino has AT LEAST other two great singers (Sarah Jane Ghiotti and Monica Hill) that for sure could deliver a very good performance.

If they are San Marino's biggest stars, maybe they are too big for Eurovision, like Avicii, Adele or David Guetta.

Am I the only one who actually likes this guy? :) His charismatic voice reminds me of Leonard Cohen and J M´Adore was quite catchy and amusing.

Pour que tu m'aimes encore is her biggest tune here. The album D'eux is the best selled album ever in France. But she released her first single and had her first success in 1983 with D'Amour ou d'amitié. Then she appeared several times on TV (I wasn't born but we got to see it in a lot of programs, as it was before René relooked her xrofl3 ) and released songs here and there. Then she became forgotten, and she came back with Ziggy in 1993 which was so huge. And then you have the album of Goldman, and she's a legend. :)

Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

San Marino has always been the "best pupil in the class", they're very few but they tend to be quite conservative, and in every aspect of everyday life they hate to be confused with Italy. Michele may be an exception, one on six/seven entries they brought to ESC. They try to diversify their identity, which is good if you want, but quite hard if you need to find artists who can tread an important international stage without slipping...

In this frenzy, I really am afraid that a Turkish singer (but it could be Swedish, Portuguese or Russian, imo) doesn't represent them at all and, as someone said before in this thread, I wouldn't want them to become a stage for any other artist since it would get political (like Switzerland sometimes try to do, with hilarious results) :)

That was me, I guess  I know what you mean, I'm not criticizing the fact that guy is Turkish, he could have been from elsewhere, he's still not related in any way to San Marino. And I always found that opportunistic (cf. Eduard Romanyuta) but I won't rant forever. As I said, I merely fear some artists will be interested in representing San Marino only to make their way to the contest since there is no genuine connection. With Miodio, Valentina, Anita... I got the feeling the country was presenting itself on that international stage, but now if basically anyone with money can sport the Sammarinese flag, the country will come down to its name only. :(

I'm curious to know how it'll turn out, if that move will reward them or not.

Honestly I am afraid to hear a song like I'm a Joker. I love all the San Marinese entries less or more but this chain may be broken this year.

Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

Statement of San Marino following the new rules of EBU:

”Small States are, once again, discriminated. Not only, now the discrimination is even formalized. This is barely tolerable and the San Marino national Radio and Television is unsure whether it can tolerate it next year too. It is unbearable that certain decisions are simply communicated and not shared with the involved broadcasters. That said, this is, from our point of view, unacceptable”.

I can understand them. Time to turn your eyes on small countries, if you want to get back Luxemburg, Andorra or Monaco and not loose San Marino....

This is what I was talking about a few days ago. Changes are fine, but they are obviously made around small group of people.

Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

I understand their position, because in addition to the changes regarding the voting presentation (they probably couldn't express their opinion about), they will be subject to that fake voting rule since they don't have televoting. They must feel like they are a ghost country, they take part but the EBU doesn't care about them, only the points they'll award will be appreciated :(

Every country must have an equal say in each decision or change, whatever their size, population, popularity, etc... But it only shows that Eurovision is political, old story. Isn't this year's motto "Come Together"? Isn't it ironic?
