Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

I was pretty confident they would keep on selecting Italian singers (which would have been understandable had they thought locals weren't good enough)

Sammarinese would more likely jump off their rock than select an Italian singer unless it's from their neighbourhood (see Senit).

By the way, I don't want San Marino to become a Platform for artists who wouldn't stand a chance to represent another country.

In this I totally agree with you

It looks like San Marino picked their representative randomly some days ago... I mean what connection does he have to them?

What was the connection between Celine Dion and Switzerland?

Luxembourg probably imported a few who had no connection to their country a few times and I wouldn't be surprised if Monaco did as well. I'm not terribly fond of that type of thing but for micro-states like San Marino I'm willing to let it slide :)

At least, Céline had a career in France and was well-known accross French-speaking countries, that's why Swiss composers choose her to represent :ch:. Vanilla Ninja, though, had zero connection and it raised criticism (despite the good results)...

Why do you say that? Michele is Italian as well.
So they would prefer some Turkish guy who has no connection to the country over their direct Neighbors with whom their share a lot culturally (the language, among other things)?

All of their winners are French singers apart from Vicky Leandros who is from Greece/Germany. But I'm sure they all had really tight connections to Luxembourg and Monaco.

Yeah guys, this discussion of San Marino choosing from other countries is actually quite lame and I don't understand the problem either. Monaco and Luxembourg did the same as mentioned, why shouldn't San Marino?

About Serhat, I got really worried when I heard his name and thought "Who the hell is that?!". But when listened to "Je M'adore", I got a little calmer. Hopefully it will at least be something fun and catchy, even if I still think he will have problems in qualifying. Maybe like a new "Mambo no. 5" or something, would be fun to see. ;)

San Marino has always been the "best pupil in the class", they're very few but they tend to be quite conservative, and in every aspect of everyday life they hate to be confused with Italy. Michele may be an exception, one on six/seven entries they brought to ESC. They try to diversify their identity, which is good if you want, but quite hard if you need to find artists who can tread an important international stage without slipping...

In this frenzy, I really am afraid that a Turkish singer (but it could be Swedish, Portuguese or Russian, imo) doesn't represent them at all and, as someone said before in this thread, I wouldn't want them to become a stage for any other artist since it would get political (like Switzerland sometimes try to do, with hilarious results) :)

Re: SAN MARINO 2016 - Serhat

The fact is that San Marino has AT LEAST other two great singers (Sarah Jane Ghiotti and Monica Hill) that for sure could deliver a very good performance.

The problem is that they need money to be at the Eurovision and so San Marino searches someone who could spend money for this adventure. From 2012 to 2015 there was Ralph Siegel, now it's time for this Serhat...

Actually I don't like at all these kind of projects.
