In international competitions, it feels fake to me when a country is represented by someone that has absolutely nothing to do with that country and cannot even speak the language of the country. An Italian without a connection to San Marino would have been bad enough, I think.
It seems anyone could represent San Marino as long as they pay the broadcaster. That's how Ralph Siegel did it but in the last four years there has at least always been someone from San Marino on stage. There is also no audience participation when it comes to choosing the performer and song, and no televote in Eurovision. It's all just the broadcaster and feels so disconnected from the people there.
I get your point very well. And I find it reasonable. But things are harder and much different when it comes to San Marino. In the number of 31,000 San Marino doesn't have much option. We are talking about a country which doesn't even have televote. This is what they can do very best.
