Re: PORTUGAL 2017

First of all, I am sure there is quality; I am sure our national selection will be better than any other this decade. I do not want to sound like a drama queen without having listened to anything, but so many ballads! Ugh! I hope no one falls asleep during the first semi-final because we really need to vote for the best songs. I remember everyone praising the singers who will compete in the first semi-final. All these ballads will cancel each other out. I wonder how Fernando will stand out. Ironically, semi-final 2 looks a better.

I am glad there are two semi-finals that will work as filters. Just imagine having so many downtempos in the final. Let's hope Lisa, Viva la Diva, David, and Pedro save us from the apocalypse, and we will send something iconic and with rhythm to Kiev. Language is not really an issue for me, but I prefer English. A few verses in Portuguse would be nice. What Bulgaria did last year was cute.

Information I gathered about the songs – singer(s), song title, language, style:

Semi-final 1

1. Márcia: "Agora" | Portuguese | Ballad
2. Golden Slumbers: "Para Perto" | Portuguse | Country ballad
3. Fernando Daniel: "Poema a Dois" / "Lost in You" | Portuguese, English | Pop-soul ballad
4. Deolinda Kinzimba: "O que Eu Vi nos Meus Sonhos" | Portuguese | Soul ballad
5. Rui Drummond: "O Teu Melhor" | Portuguese | Ballad
6. Lisa Garden: "Without You" | English | Nu-Disco, House
7. Salvador Sobra: "Amar Pelos Dois"| Portuguese | American-type, Bossa nova
8. Viva la Diva: "Nova Glória" | Portuguese | Orchestral pop, Operatic pop

Semi-final 2

1. David Gomes: "My Paradise" | English | Power pop, Pop-rock
2. Lena D'Água: "Nunca Me Fui Embora" | Portuguese | Ballad
3. Beatriz Felício: "Ao Teu Olhar" | Portuguese | Fado
4. Pedro Gonçalves: "Don't Walk Away | English | Electropop
5. Helena Kendall: "Andamos no Céu" | Portuguese | Ballad
6. Celina da Piedade: "Primavera" | Portuguese | Folk
7. Jorge Benvinda: "Gente Bestial" | Portuguese | Folk, Pop
8. TBA | Portuguese

Reminder: eight of these sixteen songs will advance to the final.

I am going crazy right now: ESC 2017 has not started well (four ballads out of five songs). Maybe this is premature (again, I do not want to sound like a drama queen), but I am fearful this year's edition will be lackluster compared to last year's one which was amazing. I just hope we do not follow this trend.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

What I'm most afraid of for our NF is the regional juries in the final. Back when we had them they automatically ranked any uptempo song last, no matter the quality. And their taste in general was just awful. This time instead of having 20 regional juries, RTP made only 7. I hope they revamped the jury selection process and hopefully they will have people that are connected with the modern and current musical industry instead of 70+ years old journalists who think the ESC is stuck in the 1960s.

Agreed. The jury is always concerning – always! I shudder just to to think about them. But I admit I like how RTP changed it. The big regional jury was a mess – I am glad it is over.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

I'm really hoping for a great placing for Portugal this year - as someone else said in the bold predictions topic, Poli Genova-style. That is, if they have a deserving song, of course. :pt: has been underrated so many times now :( . I'm actually looking forward to the Portuguese national final more than any other national final. Fingers crossed!

Oh my God: the variety of genres is both great and unexpected! There is even nu-disco  Now you've seriously piqued my curiosity guys!

As for the language issue, the musicality and elegance of Portuguese alone would be a good enough reason not to ditch it, wouldn't it?

And personally, there is no such thing as "too many ballads": as long as the song is well-crafted and moving, that's all that matters.

Re: PORTUGAL 2017

The official FESTIVAL DA CANÇÃO 2017 logo was finally revealed!

16299239_1209767169077359_7048216530113537304_n.jpg

During today's press conference, it was made clear that many formulas had been tested throughout the years, but that the goal in 2017 is to make the best FdC ever. The semifinals will be held in RTP's biggest studio (which comes as a surprise, because in 2015 it was the smallest one). It was also confirmed that Festival da Canção will be back in 2018 with the same format. The stage will also be taken in consideration, so they can produce the best show possible.

Then the jury was finally revealed: Julio Isidro is the President (we knew that already). The remaining members of the jury are: Ramon Galarza, Tozé Brito, Gabriela Schaaf, Dora, Nuno Markl, Inês Lopes Gonçalves (she had previously confirmed it), João Calisto and Inês Menezes. Basically, it is a mix of both old, middle-age and young people.

HOWEVER, Julio Isidro said that he doesn't agree with Eurovision's current style -- something that worries me. My hopes are on Nuno Markl (he is one of the most known radio man and comedian in Portugal. Besides, he tends to have an awesome musical taste!)

The press conference was the 3rd most commented subject on Twitter, here in Portugal.

Who is Julio Isidro? And what does "Eurovision's current style" mean?

Julio Isidro is an iconic TV host here in Portugal (and I mean quite old, really -- his television career is as old as RTP, so he's been in the business for 60 years). And when he says Eurovision's current style, he means the standard Scandinavian type of songs that most countries send, and the whole "package" that representing a country takes: the song, the performance, that kind of stuff. He will value a great song (for his standards, at least) and not the performance itself (so he would probably give Mans or Sergey a null points, if he would ever be a jury in ESC -- hopefully that won't happen).

The jury could be worse. I think it is fine, actually. I have not watched the press conference yet, but I like I have been reading about it.

Don't forget that jury is for the semis only. In the final it's a regional jury.

In a nutshell, I bet he regrets that Eurovision has become an entertainment show instead of remaining a music festival a la San Remo. Personally, I wouldn't blame him for that xqueenbitch Even if the staging is important these days, the song should remain key. And I'd say: all the better if he doesn't like the spread of Scandipop going on, at least Portugal won't send what everyone else sends at the moment.

With such a state of mind, I think it bodes well for the Portuguese NF: most songs will probably be ranked according to their actual musical merit, and not how busy the stage is. They'll just have to be careful once in Kyiv not to be too lazy visually when working on the final staging.
