Re: PORTUGAL 2014

So he's the male Sanna Nielsen

Too bad at ESC men can't get away with it like women can :(

You're a joker

Sanna Nielsen is not my style, but she can definitely sing.
Well, melodifestivalens wise at least, she can. We''ll see about Eurovision now ;)

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

I don't like the repetition of:
"...CULPA
... DISCULPA
... UPAA
... ULPAAA"
It's turning me mad!

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

Agree with almost everything you said, although the last paragraph is a bit exagerated  We've had pretty bad NFs before, impossible to find the worst one, I'd say.

Indeed Catarina's vocals are what worries me the most. She's done it before, she won't do it (much) better. Can't see her making it through to the final. Plus, her song style is new to our NF history but it's kind of old news in ESC. Everyone's seen it before and very few are still voting for it there.

Zana would probably be our best shot if some improvements were made. Sadly, someone messed up with the song's staging big time and it's not coming through as it should. A balsy folky colouful lady singing this might get enough votes. An ageing Scarlet O'Hara standing on the kitchen bench just won't.

Rui's song's annoying, yes, as any song sung by him will be. Yes, he has good vocal power, yes he sings in tune. But his voice is hopelessly flat, thus draining the life out of anything he sings.

I actually liked the staging with those guys singing around her. But yes, she could move a bit more and not just stand there. To what my last paragraph concerns, Homens da Luta were very bad, the NFs song this year unexistant to me. 2010 was way better. Filipa's disney song is truly amazing if we compare it to Rui's (whose performance is very exaggerated and very flat as you said.)

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

And yet they, rtp, have tried to please the public. People were complaining about the juries. They dismissed them.
People were sick of ballads. They asked for uptempos...
You know? xshrug

Are you sure they were trying to please the public? And those who complained about the jury are the same ones who want something unoriginal like 'Mea Culpa'. I personally thought it was a terrible idea to dismiss the jury and not crazy about these uptempo songs at all. If these are the kind of songs (referring to all) they can come show, which I believe is not, please better stay out of it. The selection time and working on the songs should also have started MUCH earlier.

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

But I want english title ;P

Mea culpa is Latin and it's an expression known to every language with some kind of Latin influence, English included. It is repeated three times in the prayer of confession at the Catholic Mass: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

So did I, in those happy, carefree and bygone days of rehearsal snippet watching! :D
I actually thought I would vote for it, as my other favourite Catarina had a sure place in the final. As it happened I got very confused and sort of defeated and ended up not voting for anyone...

I was worried that Poland would take all the returning attention on this forum but I'm glad this thread seems to be picking up speed

I'm not sure of anything, what do I know? xshrug But this year's changes do look like they have been listening to us... Still, all the evidences pointing to a clearing of the way to ease an Emanuel's victory are very much in our face. I can't however find any plausible reason why rtp would want to have this particular author representing them.

Maybe they want to prove to us that juries are necessary? It seems a bit thin... and at such a high cost too :(

Yes time was very short. Sheer RTP laxaty :?

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

Unsurprisingly, Catarina is leading another ESC Portugal poll.

#1 Catarina Pereira - "Mea Culpa" (52%)
#2 Zana - "Nas Asas da Sorte" (25%)
#3 Rui Andrade - "Ao Teu Encontro" (15%)
#4 Suzy - "Quero Ser Tua" (12%)
#5 Raquel Guerra - "Sonhos Roubados" (6%)

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

Actually you might be right. I'm not an expert on the subject. And it's obviously very hard to agree on what it is exactly. However Pimba says a lot. And it started once it was associated to Emanuel's song. :D I still think people confuse pimba with schlager, but there is not a definition that shows where one ends and another one starts. There is however the idea of schlager (música popular) in which you can include these songs too. xthink So you make a point there.

Yes, very true, Emanuel's song was unwillingly responsible for this naming! :D

Still, it must have existed before, it wasn't that long time ago really, say, 20 years? I believe Quim Barreiros at least was already on about it. I wonder what people called it then. Marco Paulo must have been one of the first, but there might have been others before, I don't really know. Not with the naughty lyrics of course, just very stupid ones, but the musicality was the same.
One other thing these people seem to have in common is their names. They're never simply called Catarina or Raquel, Portuguse classic sort of names. They all have weird, half foreign, lower class names like Agata, Romana, Micaela, Rebeca, Ruth Marlene... or Suzy

Schlagger is a nordic thing (I wasn't aware it actually meant popular, but it makes sense) and although I've always held it as the nordic equivalent of our Portuguse Pimba, it is of course very different from it in terms of sounds, instruments and so on.

I wonder if they too have a naughty version of it that we don't know about because it never got through any melodifestivalen? We should ask them!

Yes, she is undoubtedly the public's favourite.
I'm only frightened of the silent voters, those who ignore, who may indeed be ignorant of, the existence of polls :?

The mandatory rule stating Portuguese Only for eurovision has been taken away. The winning song may do as it thinks best. Anything can happen. Not such a smart move I should say.

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

"Mea Culpa" and then English, and then some Portuguese and again english words, and then "Mea culpa" and english word.. xfaint what a mess..

And those "aaa" "aaa" by backings sound so odd in studio version. :(

Portugal will be in my bottom 5 it seems..

Well, mea culpa would have to stay as it's kind of universal. The portuguese words are there to make the rhyme. A bit messy that, yes. No point in having this song in English as to me it means an empoverishment of what is not already a particularly rich song.
Probable bottom 5 to me too in that case, although there are many other bad songs around.
