Re: PORTUGAL 2014

I rank in final like this:

1. Suzy 9/10 - it's sort of guilty pleasure to me, but also it's decently sung and performance is different to all we had in ESC..in my book

2. Rui Andrade 8,5/10 I'm surprised I rank his entry that high, it's classical ballad, but I enjoyed performance somehow, cause outfits are so amazing, and backings are fantastic (that black girl is the most beautiful one ) and they sing good, his look and decent vocal for that quite difficult to sing ballad lifts whole entry to me...i wish he wears less make up though.. :D

3. Zana 5/10 - messy and dated, too shouty as well, I was even too polite to give 5 I guess..and what genre that is?? :?

4. Raquel Guerra 4/10 - again messy and with ugly structure, performance is also underwhelming, and again I'm polite with mark i guess, I like Portuguese language so it always lifts songs to me, whatever they are..

5. Catarina Pereira 2/10 - I'm afraid even Portuguese language doesn't help here xcry.. the worst vocally of all qualifiers, only backings help a bit, but even they aren't perfect xshrug, choreography and outfits doesn't look nice to me either, and it's such a Babic typical schalger that it's almost disgusting.. :? :(

I think A-lister can like Suzy too :D, but he can like Catarina Pereira as well!

Have you noticed Emanuel's poker face at the end of Catarina's performance? He is probably thinking "Damn, this chick already won".

Carlos Costa heavily criticized "Mea Culpa" performance. He surely finds his messy attempt ("Queres Que Eu Dance") more worthy. Ha ha ha! #Jealousy

 That men has no right to criticize anyone.

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

Totally agree with you! "Mea Culpa" is an average song, but may work in Denmark if it is revamped! Change the beat, because right now it is "Canta Por Mim" with different lyrics. I like it though.
But Zana is great too. Her perfomance must improve and she should sing it in English. I can see an ESC Winner in Zana and "Nas asas da sorte", just my feeling. I know it won't, but personally this song rocks!
BUUUUUUUUUUUT, between Catarina and Zana, Catarina for sure!

We all know it won't be revamped. It will look exactly as it looked yesterday. This girl can't sign, she was constantly out of tune and the song is less than average. To what Zana's song concerns you might not like the song which is obviously acceptable. Her performance was flaweless, though, comparing it to Catarina's sounds just outrageous.

Why do people say this will do well in :dk:? Many other songs with the same style and much better than this one have failed. Even not liking Soraia's song in 2009, it is a masterpiece compared to this poor song and Soraia sung way better than Catarina did (both in 2010 and now) and see where it ended.

I hate this feeling of making songs to look like what others from other countries have tried before and mostly failed. It's an incredibly lack of orininality and therefore brings nothing new. Zana's song, good or bad, is something unique, very Portuguese and if she won (which she won't, unfortunately) I would at least be interested on following Portugal's steps in ESC this yer. If either Catarina or Suzy win, the :pt: presence in ESC ends to me (this is a personal opinion, mind you). Rui's song was the most annoying song out of those five. His 2010 ballad was much better (far from perfect though), while this one was probably one of the worst I ever listened to. His voice is good, but a bit overreacted. He sings well, but not as much as he wants to show.

Overall, and I will say this for the last time :D this was the worst NF since I can remember. 2010 was way better and how shocking it may seems, most of those songs made me feel that Homens da Luta weren't that bad, comparing it to the living horrors and performances we had last night. (And I can't really stand their entry, btw).

What? First of all the composer has been following the Portuguese music scene since the 70's. Second of all the genre is Portuguese folk!

Can "Mea Culpa" pass to the final..... what do people here think?

It's such an obvious in your face attempt to recapture the magic of something else ("Canta Por Mim") that it kind of falls flat xshrug Portugal already tried that method once and it failed. Is there another entry that stands out better or is it really worth taking the risk with "Mea Culpa"?

^^ A Dutch song writer that lives for many many years in :pt:. He knows as much as Portuguese music as other Portuguese composers do. So your point is meaningless, sorry :D And I suppose it doesnt' sound Dutch, does it? I suppose it answers your question. We all have different taste, your suzy's ranking schocked me, tbh.

Yeah I know that but it doesn't convince me at all in what it should be.. :?
And all these songwriters.. :( I feel pity for Portugal for being a playground for these same songwriters from some countries who can't have any success in ESC for their countries, seriously, I pray for internal selection next year, FdC got really sad.. :( xcry

Singing like she did, no, she won't. :? But if it was a good singer performing this song, this could appeal to enough votes to pass to the final. But that's would be it. Unless the semi is so terrible (and more than half qualify anyway) that I can think it could qualify. But not optimistic at all. I haven't listened to any of the other song yet, though. So I wouldn't know.

I agree with you. RTP should leave the contest at once. They don't care about it and this will never get better. What can be said when the songs are worse than they were in the 90's. :?

Yeah they should ditch all the old songwriters they recycle over and over and use the money to pay for a really good composer and singer in an internal selection xsalute

Re: PORTUGAL 2014

I showed my sister "Mea Culpa" yesterday. She suddenly sang "Canta Por Mim" right around the chorus. (she didn't know that it's the same girl and same team responsible for the song). I'm guessing it's safe to say that this is "Canta Por Mim" 2.0

Agree with almost everything you said, although the last paragraph is a bit exagerated  We've had pretty bad NFs before, impossible to find the worst one, I'd say.

Indeed Catarina's vocals are what worries me the most. She's done it before, she won't do it (much) better. Can't see her making it through to the final. Plus, her song style is new to our NF history but it's kind of old news in ESC. Everyone's seen it before and very few are still voting for it there.

Zana would probably be our best shot if some improvements were made. Sadly, someone messed up with the song's staging big time and it's not coming through as it should. A balsy folky colouful lady singing this might get enough votes. An ageing Scarlet O'Hara standing on the kitchen bench just won't.

Rui's song's annoying, yes, as any song sung by him will be. Yes, he has good vocal power, yes he sings in tune. But his voice is hopelessly flat, thus draining the life out of anything he sings.

I wish that was Mea Culpa's main fault!
I mean, didn't you ever feel there was too much waste in all these national finals where all the non winners (some of them good) just go to nobody's land as old rags to be disposed of, never entering any comercial circuit, never being listened to again?
It's not as if Canta Por Mim has actually been to Eurovision.
They do it with plastic, and glass and paper. I see it as a very good idea to do some recycling here too. And it's just what they did! I see no problem in that.

And yet they, rtp, have tried to please the public. People were complaining about the juries. They dismissed them.
People were sick of ballads. They asked for uptempos...
You know? xshrug

So he's the male Sanna Nielsen

Too bad at ESC men can't get away with it like women can :(

I would like to see that idea actually happening. At the very least, public radio stations that play music could start playing these NF songs. It's a waste of effort and time to not play these songs (even if some are really bad!)
