Re: KAZAKHSTAN 2014

I agree that EBU should focus on getting European countries returning first and foremost, but I wouldn't close the door to a Kazakh debut either though. My argument for Kazakhstan joining is mostly a geographical one, since it has a geographical European part (more so than some countries already taking part) and therefor it would be, imo, hypocritical to exclude it and in the meantime allow non-European states to enter.

Also, Kazakhstan already takes part as part of Europe in different international events, unlike those other countries you mentioned.

As for the other Central Asian countries, I wouldn't like them to enter, simply because they don't even have any geographical part of Europe. They could enter ABU instead, so in that sense I agree. But this thread is about Kazakhstan though.

What i mean is Kazakhstan can join Eurovision (i hope not) and can join ABU too at the same time, so the "Asian countries" that i meant includes Kazakhstan :D

Kazakhs are Muslims and of Mongoloid ancestry. Yes, they speak Russian and Northern Kazakhstan has Russian-Ukrainian-German majority, but I don't think they need Eurovision or Eurovisions needs them.

So Eurovision doesn't need them because they (not all) are Muslims and have Mongolian ancestry? That makes zero sense xshrug

Majority of Turks and Azeris are Muslims and of "non-European" ancestry aswell, do Eurovision need them? Afterall they're hardly within the European continent aswell (just like Kazakhstan, ironically though Kazakhstan has a way larger geographical part of Europe than any of those).

So Finns, Estonians and Hungarians are of Uralic ancestry, maybe Eurovision wouldn't need them either?

I didn't know it was Eurovision ETHNIC Contest, but apparently I was wrong xshrug

@ Den

Where are you from? You don't have a flag or name of the county in your profile..

I'm just wondering, and sorry if this has already been answered/posted here, but why is membership of the Council of Europe a stipulation for Kazakhstan to join the EBU, while it isn't for Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and the North African countries?

Kazakhstan is outside of the European Broadcasting Area and EBU takes new members outside of that area only if they are members of Council of Europe. North African and Middle East countries are inside the EBA so that's why many of those countries are members of EBU.

Darn, if EBU would have just accepted Kazakhstan already (afterall it seems like they're trying everything they can not to have too many withdrawals, so in a year like this it would make sense to allow some newcomer/s), we could have gotten this in ESC 2014:

It's almost like a Kazakh "PreGomesh", Luv it!

Accepting Kazakhstan would mean expanding the Eastern block plus guaranteed points for Russia and that's something the EBU really don't want ;)

The countries their trying to get have been participating for years and are closer to the West. The countries that were most vocal about the EBU trying to woo them (Poland/Bulgaria) are the black sheep of their blocks so their harmless xshrug

Lichtenstein probably have a better chance at participating then Kazakhstan do, weren't they trying to apply to the EBU recently?

It's really good! But it's very like PreGomesh, you're right. Too like it really.

They can't accept Kazhakstan according to their own rules. They're not a part of the council of Europe nor of the broadcasting area, I think that's it.

I don't want to think of ESC as "east bloc" vs. "west bloc", I think that's a sad (and dated) way at looking at it and far from the spirit of this contest. If some are only worried about supposed extra points for Russia and care more about that hypothetical scenario than having a thriving exciting music contest with diverse entries, countries that put effort and whole of geographical Europe represented (which Kazakhstan is part of), then it's only politics and nothing else.

If Poland belongs to any "bloc" it's the unlucky Central-European bloc together with Slovakia, Czech, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Slovenia, not an "Eastern one".

I dunno what happened with Liechtenstein tbh, I'd like to see them in aswell but it seems EBU is constantly declining their attempts xshrug

They should really update that old broadcasting are map that seems to stem from the 1980's or something

And it's crazy that countries like Iraq or Libya could hypothetically be accepted, but not a country like Kazakhstan which is actually far closer to Europe than those are (afterall it even got a quite large chunk of geographical European area).

Money seems to be the main issue, the broadcaster needs help from the government to fund their EBU membership but they keep saying no.
