I'll go against the wave ! xqueenbitch xrofl3

1. Patricia Roe (very classical and dated but nice and above the boring others)
2. Eoghan Quigg (not bad, radio-friendly, very nice but not so memorable)
3. Andrew Mann (sounds like an old Bryan Adams)
4. Laura O'Neill (don't like it. Sounds sooo dated)
5. Can-Linn (this is really bad.... :?)

Rooting for Can-Linn, but like I said I think the X-factor baby-face will win by default :/

And why can't we ever hear Irish/Gaelic for a change? xshrug

Haha, even in the thread of an English speaking country, we get this.

So you deny the existence of another official language in Ireland then? ;)

How many actually speak it? There is no reason to go anything other than English in an English speaking country. I have nothing against Gaelic, I speak a little myself, and many of my extended family are fluent in it. It has great historical significance in Scotland and Ireland, but It's pretty much a dead language, and I don't think there is any demand for it to be sung at Eurovision.

The only way to keep a dying language somewhat "alive" is through culture, media and politics. Either a country can choose to make a language completely vanish, or they can try to promote it in different ways.

To give some examples:

Who knew Hebrew would suddenly revive? Israel could have easily made Yiddish the official language instead or even English. The former ex-USSR states could have let Russian take over for comfortable reasons, but most of them were promoting their original languages and now pretty much only Belarus have a dying language out of these states.

Not bad for an Irish NF! Heartbeat is my obvious favourite, if we don't send them I'll...probably just give out about how terrible RTÉ are at handling the Eurovision in here again  Andrew Mann and Laura O'Neill are quite good too, not as good as Heartbeat though, that's really got something going for it there. Eoghan Quigg's song disgusts me, it's just regurgitated vapid shite with about as much substance and feeling as the Cheeky Girls. I really hope it doesn't win, it's terrible nonsense and we'll only lose again. And then Patricia Roe's song is so dated omg. Someone send her back to the 1980s wow.

And why can't we ever hear Irish/Gaelic for a change? xshrug

RTÉ are afraid to choose one because they think it's more hip or trendy or whatever because they don't understand what would actually work in Europe. Also if they did choose one, no one would vote for it because Irish doesn't have a very good image thanks to almost a century of dire education in the language (or lack thereof).

Couldn't agree more about Eoghan. It's beyond awful. Heartbeat is the best song by far, but overall it's another disappointing Irish selection.

RTE don't have a clue. They're probably worse than BBC.

Oh please not on about languages again. Does it matter? It's a song?!

Yeah, it wouldn't matter in an instrumental song perhaps... but last time I checked there's a rule forbidding all-instrumental songs in ESC? xshrug

And don't undermine languages just because they aren't your own, this is EUROvision, not ANGLOvision... open your mind a little bit mate ;)

Next I'll be demanding that the Union Jack is stamped on all participant's flags ;)

But on a serious note, I get what you mean as I've said many times before. I just think it's pointless being preoccupied with it. I walk round in Wales and many people talk Welsh. Walk round in Ireland and I've never heard people speaking Irish. It's just not realistic to expect them to send an Irish entry.

He has right to state his opinion in all topics, maybe I don't agree sometimes too, but he has that right, it can't bore you, it can actually, but you shouldn't answer like that to him, it's not appropriate. ;)

People predictably trashing "The Movie Song" for the most shallow reasons  The song does the teen love thing well and its probably the only song that shows potential to a jury AND televote (if performed/staged correctly) xshrug

"Be Mine" just seems to blend together and nothing stands out, its like a 3 minute flatline. It sounds like a failure Switzerland would send xshrug

"Don't Hold On" is really dated but I guess its nice. I think a jury may go for it but I'm not sure about televoters xshrug That sax in the middle only puts a spotlight on how dated it is

"You Don't Remember Me" isn't that good and if I had to pick a ballad in the selection it would easily be the other one.

I think "Heartbeat" stands out the most and would probably be the one I would listen to the most. Although I'm not sure how it would do at Eurovision.

Wouldn't surprise me if you would

I'm not expecting anything, I just said it would be a nice thing to see (hear) for a change... they're basically killing their own language, it's a bit sad....

Oh well, Can-Linn ftw xcheer

I think you might have misinterpreted what I wrote ;) On this forum it is usually myself and A-lister against everybody else so we are allowed to disagree every year from about January to May on Eurovision languages ;)

I dont think Irish is a dying language, it's only really a strong language on the west coast but it's always been that way. Just because it's not used in Eurovision doesnt mean it's declining ;)
