Dream Lake
World of Dreams

For the last edition of 2015 and Sweden's 60th FSC entry, we're slowing down the tempo with the moody and beautiful melodic Dream-Pop ballad World of Dreams performed by the Indie Dream-Pop duo Dream Lake. The duo, consisting of vocalist Isabella Svärdstam and multi-instrumentalist / music producer Niklas Willar Lidholm, was formed back in 2011 and released their self-titled debut EP back in 2013. World of Dreams is the latest release by the duo, originally released back in March 2015.

FSC#83 - JANUARY 2016

Darin
Lagom

For the first edition of 2016, Sweden is sending the lighthearted and catchy uptempo "campfire"-inspired, guitar-based and singer-songwriter-like Pop song "Lagom" (can be translated to; "Just good enough" in English), performed by Darin. The entry "Lagom" is the opening track from Darin's seventh, and first Swedish-language, studio album titled "Fjärilar i magen" (Butterflies in the Stomach) which was released in the end of September 2015.

Now 28-year Darin Zanyar got his public breakthrough in Sweden at the age of 16 by coming in second place in the first edition of Swedish Idol back in 2004. Since then, Darin has become one of the most successful local acts in Sweden of the 00's-10's and in particular one of the most commercially successful acts coming from any Swedish Idol edition. Darin topped both the official Swedish album and singles chart respectively back in 2005 with his debut album "The Anthem" and its lead single "Money for Nothing" (which was co-written by Swedish singer-songwriter Robin "Robyn" Carlsson), and has since then had a handful of number one singles and numerous top. 10 singles aswell as having most of his album releases ending up at the top spot of the official album chart in Sweden. Darin also ended up 4th in the 2010 edition of Melodifestivalen and was one of the participants of the 2012-edition of the highly popular music show in Sweden's TV4; "Så mycket bättre".

So another year has come to its end, so it's time to make a review of it. 2015 was a jumpy year result-wise for Sweden, coming off strong in the beginning with a couple of top. 10 positions, but then struggling for about half year with mediocre to bad results, just to end the year on a strong note with another four top. 10 positions (including a second spot).

I have been trying to mix things up as usual, sending both uptempos, midtempos and slower stuff, commercial club music, indie-pop, ballads, Hip-Hop and just regular Pop. Again it's been important for me to showcase a variety of the Swedish contemporary music scene, but of course always stay true to my own taste. More than half the entries this year have been in the Swedish language and I think it's important to showcase local music and songs sung in the native language.

I hope you enjoyed the Swedish entries of 2015 and that you found some gems that will stick with you, thanks to everyone that gave us support and let's look forward to a new great year of music!

FSC#84 - February 2016

Duvchi feat. Loreen
Fire Blue

For this February edition we are revisiting where it all started for me in FSC by making singer-songwriter and producer Jens "Duvchi" Duvsjö make a comeback in the contest. Nearly three years ago, back in April 2013, I entered my first entry ever in the FSC with Duvchi's Whole Life Tour which earned a respectable top. 10 position in that edition.

Whole Life Tour was Duvchi's second single following his 2011 debut single Turtleduvs, and since 2013 has he been busy feauturing on and producing music for other acts. The entry for this month's edition; Fire Blue, which features vocals from Eurovision Song Contest winner Loreen, is picked from Duvchi's debut album; With the World, released in the autumn of 2015. It's a melodic Dream-Pop ballad with beautiful vocals by Loreen and moody production and vocals by Duvchi.

Loreen Lorine Talhaoui is mostly known as the winner of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest with Euphoria, but was actually first known to the Swedish public by her participation in the first edition of Swedish Idol back in 2004 where she ended fourth. Loreen's featured on the Rob N' Raz single The Snake, released in 2005, but it wasn't until her participation in Melodifestivalen 2011 with the entry My Heart is Refusing Me that she got her commercial breakthrough in Sweden. Loreen is currently working on her follow-up album to the 2012 release Heal.

FSC#85 - MARCH 2016

Petra Marklund
Ensam inte stark

Nearly three years ago, back in May 2013, I experienced my first (out of two so far) victories in FSC with Petra Marklund's Händerna mot himlen. For this March 2016 edition it's time for Petra to make a comeback in FSC, this time around with the title-track of her second Swedish language album Ensam inte stark [meaning: Alone not strong which is a play on words based on the proverb Ensam är stark (=Alone is strong)].

Between the release of her 2013 Swedish language album debut and her follow-up in autumn of 2015, Petra Marklund (formerly known under the stage act name September) has been hosting the popular Swedish annual summer sing-a-long show Allsång på Skansen for two summers in a row, ending the job on live TV on the season final 2015. As for the entry for FSC#85; Ensam inte stark is a good example of Scandinavian and Swedish Pop at its finest; well-produced melodic and bombastic yet a cold melancholic distance which makes a beautiful combination.

FSC#86 - April 2016

Avicii vs. Conrad Sewell
Taste the Feeling

For April 2016, we are seeing two familiar faces back in the FSC with successful Swedish DJ-Producer Tim "Avicii" Bergling teaming up with Aussie singer Conrad Sewell in the official Coca Cola anthem of 2016; Taste the Feeling. Avicii ended up 6th in the FSC#56 - October 2013 edition with the hit song Hey Brother (you can read more about Avicii by clicking here), while Sewell's vocals featured on the Kygo track Firestone which brought Norway a top.5 position back in FSC#77 - July 2015.

Since 2013, Avicii has been busy touring and releasing EP's and singles that finally resulted in his second official studio album; Stories, being released back in October 2015 (the album features the hit Waiting for Love amongst others). Avicii recently released a statement that 2016 would mark a pause for him in music and touring and also announced a new final tour for 2016.

As mentioned earlier, the entry for Taste the Feeling is part of an official Coca Cola campaign and will also be part of the company's sponsor-campaign for UEFA Euro 2016. The song is a catchy electronic-guitar-based Pop song with an optimistic summery feeling and tune to it perfect for the Spring/Summer season of 2016.
