Galantis
No Money

Galantis.jpg

The summer season of 2016 is sneaking in on us (if you're located North on the globe that is :)), and what better way to start it off than with a proper party? xcheer

For May 2016, Sweden is sending the catchy EDM/Club track No Money by EDM production/songwriter duo Galantis. The entry has a fresh modern production to it, is quirky and uplifting and comes across as something different in its genre thanks to the original production and overall package made by the duo and the niche they carved for themselves in the sea of EDM/Club/House music.

Galantis consists of producer Christian "Bloodshy" Karlsson aswell as producer-DJ Linus "Style of Eye" Eklöw. The musical project started off in 2013 with their first official single and EP release in 2014, followed by the duo's first full studio album release back in 2015. The duo is probably mostly known up till now for the 2015 club hit Runaway (U & I).

Christian Karlsson previously enjoyed worldwide success as part of the Bloodshy & Avant production duo together with fellow producer Pontus "Avant" Winnberg. The producer duo started out in the early 2000's and are best known for their worldwide Britney Spears' hits Toxic and Piece of Me aswell as other productions for artists like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Milian and Rachel Stevens. Since 2009, Karlsoon and Winnberg also debuted their own indie pop music project Miike Snow which is currently on its third studio album release as of spring 2016 with the single Genghis Khan enjoying success on American indie radio.

Linus Eklöw aka Style of Eye also started out in the early-mid 00's releasing club singles under his artist name and had minor commercial success with the single Kids, other than that Eklöw's biggest commercial accomplishment, before the Galantis project, was as a co-writer for Icona Pop's smash hit I Love It which he also earned an award for.

Elliphant (feat. Skrillex)
Spoon Me

elliphant.jpg

This time around, Sweden is represented by Alternative-Electro-HipHop-Pop singer, songwriter and rapper Ellinor Elliphant Olovsdotter with the entry Spoon Me, co-written by Olovsdotter herself and co-produced by American EDM-Dubstep producer Sonny Skrillex Moore.

Elliphant released her debut track Tekkno Scene back in 2012, which featured on her self-titled debut EP from the same year. In 2013 she followed up by releasing her critically acclaimed debut studio album; A Good Idea, including tracks such as Live Till I Die, Music is Life and Down on Life. In 2014 two more EP's got released, including collaborations with former FSC entrants; American producer Diplo (Major Lazer) and Danish indie-pop singer MØ (the latter on the song One More). Elliphant was also featured on the track Too Original, taken from Major Lazer's third album release from 2015.

This month's entry Spoon Me is taken from Elliphant's second studio album Living Life Golden, which was released in late March of 2016. The same album also includes the single Love Me Badder from 2015 which Elliphant got a minor international radio hit with.

Spoon Me is a sexually themed mid-tempo electro dancehall-inspired song with cool and fresh co-production by Skrillex. Skrillex is previously known for releases like First Of The Year (Equinox) and Bangarang, and while this might be a more poppier affair and not really dubstep, it still includes the tempo-shifting and multiple layer production that Skrillex and the dubstep genre in general is characterized by.

Veronica Maggio
Vi mot världen

Veronica_Maggio_5.jpg

July 2016 marks the fourth time for Veronica Maggio in FSC for Sweden, this time with the second single Vi mot världen (We Against the World) taken from her fifth studio album Den första är alltid gratis (The First is Always for Free), released in spring 2016.

Making a complete new presentation for Veronica Maggio at this point is unnecessary. We've previously seen her ending up top. 10 back in FSC#26 (April 2011) with her biggest hit in Sweden to date; Jag kommer, followed by another FSC #10 in the 57th edition of November 2013 with the single Sergels Torg. Now the turn has come to the up-lifting and catchy guitar-based Swe-Pop track Vi mot världen.

The only question that remains: Will she manage to top her previous attempts in FSC this time around? Maybe a win finally? You'll decide!

Little Jinder
Super 8

dxiskm.jpg

For the 90th edition of FSC, Sweden is once more sending a female Swedish language Pop song good for the late summer/early autumn season, a song quite typical and representative for contemporary Swedish pop; a melodic Pop track with a hint of both Indie- and Electro-Pop and a touch of melancholy including the quite common Swedish (and Nordic) fusion of warmness and coldness.

28-year Josefine "Little" Jinder is the daughter of Swedish folk musician Åsa Jinder. Jinder debuted back in 2008 releasing indie-dance-dubstep EP's in English under an American label followed by her English language debut album in 2013, however it wasn't until she crossed-over to the Swedish language and market that she started to become known to the general public, in particular with the single Vita bergens klockor (The Clocks of Vita bergen*) released in 2014 which can be considered her proper commercial debut single, followed by the self-titled debut album released in autumn of the same year.

In November 2015, she released the first single; Hångellåten (The Snog Song) (featuring locally popular in the 90's Swedish singer-songwriter Mauro Scocco), taken from her second Swedish-language album Allting suger (Everything Sucks) which was released in early 2016. This edition's entry for Sweden titled; Super 8 is the second official promo track from that latest album.

I hope you will enjoy!

*Vita bergen is a park area of Södermalm, Stockholm.

L L O J D
Stranden

1532136.jpg

For this September edition, Sweden is sending the duo Llojd (spelled L L O J D) (consisting of André Carlsson and Isak Friberg) with the entry Stranden (The Beach). Stranden is a Swedish Pop song with a smooth mid-tempo vibe and musical influences by both indie-Pop and urban music and a general mood that fits perfect for the late summer/early autumn period.

The song is taken from the duo's first studio album; Jag kommer älska mitt liv snart (I Will Love My Life Soon), released in early 2016, which also includes previous single releases from the period 2014-2015 such as Över Taken (Over the Roofs) and Nya segrar (New Victories), and follows up the duo's first EP titled; Skisser (Sketches) (released back in 2014).

Min Stora Sorg
Anso&John

2h4l4so.jpg

What happens if you mix Swedish indie-Pop and production inspired by British alt-R&B producer/singer/songwriter Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange with summer sounds including Spanish guitars and the ocean breeze? You get Min Stora Sorg's Anso&John, which marks the 70th entry for Sweden in FSC, a track taken from the act's second studio album Vår / Sommar - 16 (Spring / Summer - 16) (despite its title released back in autumn of 2015).

Behind the alias Min Stora Sorg (My Big Sorrow) we find singer/songwriter Ann-Sofie Anso Lundin, who debuted back in 2012 with her first EP followed by her debut album; Mvh Anso M$$, released in 2014. Min Stora Sorg is still a pretty much unknown name on the Swedish music scene if you're not into Swedish indie-Pop and a regular listener of Swedish National Radio P3. Being a known name or not is irrelevant and this hidden gem of a song is worth getting the attention it deserves with its melodic style, nice vibe and warmth take on Swedish indie-Pop.

Skott
Lack of Emotion

20qjt77.jpg

Sweden is starting off the new year on a fresh note with the haunting entry "Lack of Emotion",
a fusion of electro-pop, dream-pop, disco and alternative-pop, performed by up-and-coming singer-songwriter Skott.

The stage name Skott simply stems from the surname of 25-year old Pauline Skött, who grew up with a folk music
collective in the small village of Vikarbyn in the central Swedish region of Dalarna.

There's still some mystery surrounding Skott's background, but story goes that she was banned from contemporary
popular music while growing up, and coming from a background in Swedish folk and eventually crossing over to Pop
she has then created her own unique musical style which can also be heard on this track.

Lack of Emotion is Skott's fourth individual track release, following the singles Porcelain, Wolf and Amelia. These
are all songs released during the year 2016 and a first glimpse of what can be anticipated from a planned debut album
coming up sometime in 2017.

Skott is signed to the hip London-based record label Chess Club Records which also is home to
Danish singer-sonwriter and former FSC-entrant aswell as being part of the launch of British acts like folk-rock band Mumford and Sons and singer Kyla La Range and American alt.pop duo MS MR amongst others.

Things are already looking bright for Skott's musical future as she has, apart from being signed to a cred label, already gained international critical acclaim aswell as being pushed by influential BBC1 radio in the UK.

I really hope it will only go up from here (or atleast stays good enough).

Sabina Ddumba
Time

rs5xyr.jpg

For March 2017, Sweden is sending the catchy R&B-Pop entry Time performed by 23-year Sabina Ddumba. The track is taken from Ddumba's debut album Homeward Bound, released in the end of 2016.

Born in Stockholm, Ddumba grew up in a suburb to the city in a family of Ugandan origin and one out eight siblings
and she was singing in the Tensta Gospel Choir as part of her early years.

In 2012 she would take her first steps aiming at a professional career in music as a participant in the first, and only, season
of Swedish X-Factor, unfortunately she didn't make it to the weekly finals. It wouldn't take long however until Ddumba
started to get some jobs in the music industry, she started lending her vocals to a couple of musical projec with one of them being
back vocalist on Katy Perry's Walking on Air in 2013.

In 2014 she released her debut single Scarred for Life, but her first commercial success came in the following year with Not Too Young charting in the top. 10
of the official Swedish singles chart. This edition's Swedish entry for FSC; Time, is her fourth single release and was used to push her debut album.

Maja Gödicke
Blå

w7zwu8.jpg

Spring is coming (in Europe atleast), and for this April edition, Sweden is sending the catchy Swedish-language singer-songwriter / indie-Pop entry Blå (Blue) by Maja Gödicke with an uplifting sound that fits well to this period of the year.

The 26-year old singer-songwriter Maja Gödicke, daughter of Swedish actor Stefan Gödicke (who starred in movies like Wallander - Mörkret (Wallander - The Darkness) and the 2016 Academy Awards nominee for best movie in foreign language; En man som heter Ove (A Man Called Ove)), didn't release her debut album Omniana until 2015, although it's rather a collection of songs she recorded between 2005-2015 than a standard studio album.

Gölicke previously worked together with indie- music acts Pacific! and Lo-fi Fnk, she's also part of the group Obsi which also consists of Simon Ljungman from Augustifamiljen and Andreas Jensen from the band Fibes! Oh, Fibes!.

The single Blå, which premiered nearly a year ago, is the first single released by Gödicke post her debut album and probably the first peak of what could end up on her yet to be released follow up solo album.

I didn't have very high expectations for this latest edition, but with a bad 2016 and a quite good start in 2017, it still feels a bit so-so to come back to the average results in this edition, but what can one day? xshrug Atleast nice to see some support from nearly half the juries including juries that rarely supports my chosen entries :)....

Miss Li
Aqualung

b9cart.jpg

For this edition, Sweden is sending the Sia-esque midtempo Power-Pop ballad Aqualung, performed by the 34-year singer-songwriter Linda "Miss Li" Carlsson. Carlsson is making her comeback to the contest after first entering it back in the October 2009 edition with Dancing The Whole Way Home, which ended up on a 19th position.

This, almost anthemic, big Pop-chorus entry Aqualung is the second single taken from Miss Li's upcoming, yet to be released, eight studio album following the single Bonfire, which was released in 2016.

Miss Li debuted back in 2006 with the album Late Night Heartbroken Blues, however it wasn't until 2008 that the quirky indie-Pop single Oh Boy, taken from that album, charted and gave her her first, out of so far only two, top. 10 peaks on the official Swedish singles chart. Her most successful song to date however, and only chart topper thus far, is the Lars Winnerbäck duet Om du lämnade mig nu (If You Left Me Now), taken from Winnerbäck's 2007-album Daugava.

Miss Li's songs have been frequently used in different TV adverts throughout the years, aswell in international TV shows and as promo for some movies. In 2012 she was one of the participants of the Swedish TV4 show Så Mycket Bättre, which have also featured previous FSC entrants such as the FSC-winner Petra "September" Marklund and former Swedish Idol and Melodifestivalen participant Darin.

So question is, will Miss Li have a bigger success in FSC this time around with Aqualung? It definetely fits the formula and has what it takes to enter the FSC Hall-of-Dame with its big memorable chorus, authentic strong vocals and dramatic lyrics.

This win is extra special, being my 50th entry for Sweden to the FSC! Also it's been nearly 3 years since Sweden's last victory, and oh boy did I struggle to reach even close to this again, but always with staying true to my own music taste and trying to showcase different sides of Swedish music to you guys, artists and songs that most people outside of Sweden, and many times even in Sweden, would have barely heard of before, so not necessarily taking the easy road in this while I could have easily done so considering the many choices this small, but big music nation has to offer.

While it's fun to be successful in this, and surely I am quite invested in this and sometimes (like most of us could feel at times), I too felt that my chosen entries were underrated, in the end of the day I am really here for the fun of it all and to share music with you and to get to know music from all around the globe and get to know new people along the way.

A very big thank you to everyone of you who voted for Sweden in the FSC#99 - May 2017 edition, and made my third win (and Sweden's fourth in total thus far) possible xhug
