Btw, despite some good results now I believe all Asian teams will fail to advance from the group stage... unless Spain loses to Japan by purpose in order to kick Germany out and to become 2nd in the group which can be an advantage because they would avoid Brazil in quarter finals.
Despite Mexico being weak I dont believe Saudi Arabia will beat them, Australia will imo lose to Denmark and South Korea is almost in an hopeless position anyway (which feels unfair because they are the Asian team that plays the most attractive football)

Sorry for the quote, but it's just funny to remember what we were thinking just a few days ago. xcrazy How incredible were the results in the last few days... I probably thought the same a few days ago.

Strange FIFA bullshit - Australia takes part in Eurovision, period :D

It´s a pain in the ass that you had to right nasty comments - People should be fair and just be happy for other teams - Each tournament is different.. there will be new chances.. but I absolutely hate sore losers.

Actually Football Australia decided to change to the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) in 2006 to increase the chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

I was obviously shocked about the German elimination but in general I am very excited to see the Asias rise because I've been closely following the Asian football for a while and I think after the performances they delivered in this tournament they totally deserve to get three teams into the Round of 16 :)

Joining the Confederations chit-chat

Actually UEFA is doing alright. The performances of European nations away from home are siginificantly weaker than in World Cups hosted in Europe: In World Cup 2010 & 2014 only 6 European teams qualified for the R16, while in World Cup 2006 & 2018 10 European teams made it.
This is another World Cup outside of Europe but Europe got 8 teams through to the Round of 16. Better stats than in South Africa and Brazil. I noticed however this is the second consecutive WorldCup in which three European teams finished on last place. In 2018 it was Iceland, Germany and Poland and now it is Wales, Denmark and Serbia. So we see the weaker European representatives struggle to get good results lately.

In South America only the giants managed to qualify which confirmed my assumption that the second-tier teams in South America have decreased in the last few years. You could observe it in the Qualification campaign in which Brazil and Argentina dominated by a landslide (usually they have a hard time qualifying, especially Argentina). The WC 2002 was the last time South America got only 2 teams in R16 (Argentina failed in Group stage but Paraguay made it beside Brazil). Then again, these two teams are pretty hot contenders and despite CONMEBOL as a whole did not well I think the World Cup winner will be Brazil.

CONCACAF only got one team through to the R16 as well. But their perspective is not bad at all. Mexico failed to advance from the Group for the first time since 1978, but USA and Canada are future promises. And USA is already pretty good

Asian achieved its best result ever. Never before they got three teams through to the R16. Ironically these are not the Middle East countries who I thought might do well because of home advantage but the Far East countries + Australia

Africa did well too. It is only the second time theyve got two teams in the R16. The first time was in 2014.

South America is a big flop, if we count Peru losing to Australia in the intercontinental play-off, Ecuador and Uruguay out in the group stage, although they managed to get 4 points. It's the worst campaign in twenty years... and if we add Mexico and Costa Rica flop, this has not been the best year fot the latino community.
Still our powerhouses Brazil and Argentina are in the game, but something is clearly not working well in the zone where qualifiers are intense and competitive.

We should not forget that all teams who were already qualified and played with a B-team basically lost the last game. France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil.. It turned out great for teams like Japan and South Korea in the end, but it remains a problem imo because it really affects the outcome in the end. At least you could say that Germany can only blame themselves that they gave it away against Japan earlier (although they were the better team) but I feel especially sad for both Ghana and Uruguay, who deserved it a bit more compared to South Korea if you ask me.

And yeah, I'm hoping to see some entertaining and tight games now, but I fear it will be difficult. A lot of games with a clear favourite. Maybe USA and Japan could surprise us.

Good analysis, but Japan winning against Croatia will not be a major surprise if you ask me.

I wanted to write a longer analysis of this match against :ch: and all three matches in general, but since this morning a close friend passed away and I am not at all in the mood for anything, I can basically just repeat what I said after Cameroon.

Without defense, it is not possible to play serious football. Once again, we played well offensively, we managed to score two goals, and it rarely happens for :ch: to conceive more than a single goal on the match, but simply put we didn't exist in the defense and pretty much every :ch: attack was a scoring chance. In the end, a better team goes through to the knockout stage.

I don't like seeing things that have nothing to do with football and the behavior of certain players from :ch: I better not comment, I think FIFA will have what to investigate.

Football-wise, at the moment, the result is realistic and deserved. There were some good things as well, but the bad ones prevented us from passing the group stage. We managed to score the most goals in our group but we also had one of the worst defenses on the championship and we conceived 8 goals on 3 matches.

Nonetheless, we need continuity to do something bigger and we need to make some reconstruction ahead of EURO 2024 qualifications so that we can be ready for that challenge. With more strong matches under our feet, some of these problems will also be resolved.

I will probably not watch the matches today because I am grieving but good luck to all teams and may the better ones advance!
