39 countries is quite good and provides a fair chance for all in the semis. Smaller semis mean a >50% chance to qualify, and the most important show - the final - doesn't care if it's 30 or 45 countries, since the maximum finalists can only be 26 (or 25 in a big 5 country).

San Marino apparently loves SiSi :D

If they can afford Eurovision with a sponsor, so why can't Ukraine? But since Ukraine has a new government, a lot of BS is uttered from their officials.

If more than 46 countries wanted to participate what would they do? A relegation system again?

I think each semifinal can also hold as much as 26 participants. Which means, with 52 semifinalists and 6 prequalified finalists, Eurovision could easily take 58 participants, that's bigger than the actual number of countries in Europe.

The rules state the current maximum is 46, with 20 on each semi-final. But I guess it wouldn't hurt that much to extend it if the number of interested countries was just a bit bigger.

There already was a semifinal of 28 in 2007, so it really wouldn't hurt allowing 50 participants to enter

Yeah, but it was failure and probably EBU realized that, so present rules don't allow to have a too much countries in semifinal.

Exactly. They really should have started the 2 semi-final system in 2007. Not only would the semi-finals be extremely less boring to watch but also the results would have been much fairer.

ofc the semi of 2007 sucked a lot, but i still see no problem if a semi sizes up to the maximum number of countries that are also allowed in the final.

And it would never happen because there arent enough countries in Europe in the first place.

The maximum number of countries that can participate in Eurovision is 57, which is the number of members of the EBU (56) plus Greece.
