Re: Balearica Island goes oldschool

Ok, so ::bal will not be a superhero. It was worth a shot tho. And I'm still a fan of Juicy M. ;)

As the title suggests, the next entry is an old one. I've sent entries from the 90s before, which some will probably say is pretty old, and the oldest entry so far has been Judas Priest - Freewheel Burning, from 1983. The next entry is older, and could actually be older than some parents of NSC members. In 1977, the French band Space released Magic Fly, which became a pretty big hit, but the first I think I heard of the melody, was a cover made by Minimalistix (whose Struggle For Pleasure was the Balearica Island entry in the Unfair Host spinoff). However, I think the original is worthy of being an entry for us, so the next ::bal entry is: Space - Magic Fly:

Oh, and the video isn't an attempt at being retro, it is actually really old. :p

:)

Re: Balearica Island rules the Uzbek Banana

Because I was away during the confirmation period for the last edition, I never got around to post about our entry in NSC 125. Combichrist - We Rule The World, Motherfuckers (and a Mad Max: Fury Road video) did much better than expected, and came really close to qualifying. Finished 12th tho, best result since Tina Maze qualified in NSC 117.

Here's the video, in case someone missed it:
(It's not a deleted video, even if it might look like it is)

And then the news:
2 upcoming entries, and altho neither of them has been confirmed yet, this is what we're sending:

In NSC 126, we bring you yet ANOTHER movie inspired song, following in the footsteps of Dil Se... (Chaiyya Chaiyya), Fast & Furious 7 (See You Again) and the unofficial Mad Max (Combichrist), Juan Alcaraz brings us Minions Bounce, from the Minions movie:

AATW Uzbekistan is the next spinoff, and from a country I know pretty much nothing about, at least when it comes to music. But I found some good stuff, including a Moscow based, Uzbekistan born psytrance label owner and producer, known as Alfida. The song that stood out the most for me was Sevgilim (which according to Google means my love or sweetheart in both Uzbek and Turkish), made together with Psycoholic:

Re: Balearica Island rules the Uzbek Banana

Talking to myself here it seems... Oh well.

So the Banana song failed, which was a bit disappointing, but not really surprising, but it's left me wondering about something. How could AronChupa - I'm An Albatraoz win NSC, and Juan Alcaraz - Minions Bounce finish 23rd in the semi? They're pretty similar, so I don't get it... :? Is it personal, since I don't Skype or something?

If it makes you feel better I dislike both equally. ^^ But I guess IMA is more bitchy, and bitchy does good in NSC.

Re: Balearica Island rules the Uzbek Banana

I'm an Albatroz has that Roaring 20s shtick NSC loves (Caravan Palace, Caro Emerald, Alice Francis, Parov Stelar, etc.) which gives it a huge advantage. It also has actual vocal parts which are quite uhhhh "sassy" I guess (NSC loves this too). And the instrumental parts are also quite different. Sure both are... jumpstyle? if that's what it's called. You know, the only way to dance to either song is by jumping. However I'm an Albatroz, despite being abysmally awful, is kinda catchy. You know those intrumental pa pa papara parts yeah? Quite annoyingly catchy. Bounce is similar, but just different enough and unfocused in single simple melody that it fails to be as catchy. This has happened a lot times in NSC. Especially with symphonic metal and indie genres. It happened to me as well, though on a smaller scale. "You're Not Alone" (Mobius) was said to be similar to "The Dragonborn Comes" (Rumia). The latter got 5th place and the former 26th (PQ entry, so it didn't go through semis). They were similar, but just different enough for one to be liked and other not so much.

Anyway that's how I see it. On a personal note, I despise minions with a passion that burns with intensity of thousand suns. Even if Loreena McKennitt (whose music has inspired me and helped me through some stuff) did something minions related, I would burn all of her CDs I own.

OMG, people writing in my thread! :D

I think both are equally terrible tbh

Not really making me feel better, no. :p But I see the bitchy point, that would pretty much explain Catfight's success, since every other hardstyle entry have failed in NSC...

Thanks for the explanation, a lot of this does make sense. :) I'm not gonna go into the details of "I'm An Albatraoz" here, because there are quite a few things about it I don't like, and I don't really want to diss a former winner, especially since I also gave it some points. :p

About genre tho (and my next planned entry will actually touch this subject), they're both in a fairly new genre known as "Melbourne Bounce". Jumpstyle is more similar to hardstyle, but less melodic, and imo a little bit softer. So you basically jump to jumpstyle (jumpstyle is actually a specific type of dancing, but I haven't learned it), and you bounce to Melbourne bounce. ;)

I don't get the Minions hate tho, I love them. :D

Stay cool, dude. I've got nothing but respect for Balearica Island, a nation where you can definitely see how the entries represent the user and are carefully selected with passion before strategy. xcheer1

Ugaly thinks I'm cool! xcheer1

Thanks, it's great to see that there are people who like what I do with my nation. :) I could never send a song I dislike just to get a good result, so even tho I miss being in a final, I won't really change anything. The future entries for ::bal will still be songs I like. ;)

I might change how I do the thread titles here tho, I should add NSC XXX, maybe that will make people drop by here more often. :p

Re: Balearica Island has been caught by the Genre Police (127)

The Genre Police wants to have a word with you:

A lot of reasons why I've chosen this entry. First of all, I like it a lot. It was on the Norwegian top 20 singles chart a few months ago, and I pretty much loved it instantly.
Second, Lexi's vocals (and the whole song) remind me a bit of a 15 year old song called Daddy DJ (by Daddy DJ). I was a huge fan of that song, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been sent to NSC.
Third, you probably all know I have a bit of a need for speed, given what happened this summer. So it seems fitting to have an entry featuring an Australian (S3RL) and a German (Lexi) artist, as these are the only countries (at least that I know of) with roads that have no speed limits. :D
And fourth, the topic of genres pop up all the time. I figured it was time for the genre police to give a statement. ;)

As for the genre of THIS song (and I might get arrested for this), it seems to be happy hardcore. Not really what I would call happy hardcore, as for me that would be sound of DJ Paul Elstak, Dune, Marusha, Party Animals, (old) Scooter and Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo (to name a few), but that type of happy hardcore was popular in the 90s. This song was made 20 years after, and obviously have a different sound. But still, I really like it, and the tempo of it fits happy hardcore imo.

So, our next entry is: S3RL feat. Lexi - Genre Police :)

Re: Balearica Island has been caught by the Genre Police (127)

I get a feeling of disbelief when I look at the final results of NSC 127. Did that really happen? Balearica Island won? I can definitely understand that not everyone understands how Genre Police managed to win NSC, I don't really get it either. But my best guess is that it was the lyrics, and how we all discuss genres here. And this definitely shows that this is a very open minded contest, that anyone can win, and that there will always be surprises. :D And, NEVER give up.

More than just a feeling tho, I'm incredibly happy to finally have won. I came close with Catfight and Crystallize, and I'm guessing that Catfight might be the reason some people thought ::bal had won before, as it's been a legendary Balearican entry, but I think Genre Police might become the new legend after this. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, this was the first win in the history of Balearica Island. ;) Whether it will remain the only one or not, is also something that only time can tell, I gotta say that I have my doubts that I will ever experience this again, but you never know. Strange things have happened before. :p

It's also pretty incredible how much luck was involved here. The semi first, Genre Police finished 10th, and was FAR down in reju. With just one single point less from one of you, Carpatina would have qualified instead, because of more voters. And in the final... 166-164-163-162-156. I would of course have been very happy just getting a PQ spot, but I've noticed that the difference between seeing my nation on top of the list, and finishing 2nd, is quite big. I was really lucky this edition, and I'm really happy about it. Sorry about writing so much about this, but I just can't get over what has happened here.

Oh, and to the people who say they didn't like my entry, I can assure you there are no hard feelings from me. I've disliked winning songs before too, and I think it's impossible to find a song that EVERYONE likes. We're all just too different for that, and that's one of the things that make NSC so awesome. ;)

I have NO idea how to follow up a win tho. I kinda want the next entry to be something epic, but on the other hand, all my previous prequalified entries have failed in the final, so why change a tradition? :p We'll see, I haven't decided on my next entry yet, and I haven't slept properly since the results, so I think I'll use the weekend to decide. :)

I haven't said congratulations in the results thread, so here's a belated congratulations just for you! xrunhug As I said before, this winner was exactly what NSC needed.

The fact that no one commented or even clicked like on the entry announcement in this thread though

I think this edition is the happiest I've ever been about a winning entry since I've joined NSC.

Thanks. :D

This thread isn't the most visited on the NSC subforum, so I guess nobody really knew my entry until the semi started. :p

Me too, surprisingly enough.
Srsly tho, awesome to see that you like it so much. :D
