You're right too of course. Even though I've only "got" the act and realised how good it really is, I believe an Austrian win won't be good for eurovision. Most people coming to it superficially will see it only as proof of ESC being no more that a freak show and dismiss it as rubbish.

THIS.

The same thing happened with Lordi but it meant people were talking about Eurovision a lot more and the quality has gone up since then. Any promotion is good promotion and she would be remembered years down the line in the same way Lordi and Loreen have!

I just watched the performance again and it gives me shivers. Has there ever been an audience reaction so rapturous before, both during and after the song? It was insane and an incredible feeling to watch. I think Conchita was really feeding off of their energy because i've never heard her sing as well as she did last night. Everything just came together.

She's going for the win now. We'll probably have 20 countries competing next year as a result but I don't care xqueenbitch

The last note ending in the flames is probably some of the best staging ever, such an amazing moment

Lordi's victory involved a different genre we'd never seen in Eurovision. It broke clichés like "you need a catchy euro-pop song to win Eurovision". Conchita can't offer anything of this.

First of all, I am gay.

I don't think Conchita is competing for the LGTB people at all, but for herself and her country, as it's logical. I don't feel like she's competing for me. At all.

I'm sorry but I don't buy this about tolerance, stereotypes, etc..... Tom became Conchita cause he wasn't succesful enough as Tom. That's my opinion.

Even if Conchita wins, I don't see why that would help to develop the situation of LGTB people there in problems or improve it in other countries where equality is close.

But anyway, this is a SONG contest, social contest, personality contest, political contest or sequin contest? ;)

OMG, finally I found someone who thinks exactly like I do! :)

I wrote it a couple days ago on this topic but I can do it once again, for some reasons he is doing not good thing for LGBT community, because his image is so agressive. I know, I know, you'll say that "she" is a "diva" and "kind" and blablabla, but society = different people. Becuase of Conchita some people may think that every gay wants to look like a weirdo.

I think e.g. Wentworth Miller did so much better job for gays, because it's not a big deal to be homo, it's just like different eye color and you don't have to doing big deal for it. You can read comments like "I wish I was a boy! :(" from a lot of heterosexual girls... :p Conchita is flawness only for rock-ribbed gays. Some people bother on fanaticism.

Maybe it'll show it doesn't matter who you are as long as you have the talent? I dunno  I do get your point but I think it's great if more people take notice of Eurovision as a fan of the contest.

Well, I guess that will be their problem. The song and the performance, if it is tomorrow as it was yesterday, deserve winning, as well as Sweden and The Netherlands, which are great too. I mean that this would not be just a geek winner, as it is in fact a lovely song with good lyrics and an exquisite staging.

Conchita might be regarded as actually freakier than Lordi xshrug
But you've got a point. Lordi set me going with eurovision and is my favourite winner ever. Along with Norway 1995 maybe... ;)

Who the f*** is Wentworth Miller???
Let me just remind you, that it has been the drag queens and the fags that had the balls to stand up against the discrimination of the police in the stonewall inn. And the ones who did NOTHING had the same arguments back then, than you have now. It's the queer ones who change the spirit of society!

Don't worry, you're welcome to bring dear Rui along:rolleyes: Latvia has already lined up Samanta with a great "be yourself" anthemxyes

I might consider it... xthink
But only if Rui comes as Queen Victoria and Big Samanta as a very snowy Yeti!

simonPL: Tom doesn’t represent Lgbt community, he represents his country to a song contest. Are the Polish girls representing heterosexual community? No, they represent their country. It’s the same. Are Polish girls damaging women’s image (in general)? No. Of course there would always be people who generalize "Eastern Europeans girls are easy-going”, “gays are so freak”etc. but an educated person do not fell in the trap of stereotypes.

I wanted to say something in these lines. I do think that Conchita is doing something for the LGTB people (not representing, but doing something for them). She is NOT trying to make people like her, but respect her. That's the point: respect. Someone asked before what would we think if someone appeared on stage dressed like a dog. Well, first of all I would respect it. Dressing like a dog is OK, I see a lot of people dressing like dogs in Carnival, what's wrong about it?? Secondly, I would listen to the song and see if it had an important message to convey or, if not, if it is fun and good music at least. If someone dressed like a dog sang a decent song about animal maltreatment, with good lyrics and good music, I'd love it!

Homophobes/Transphobes will always be homophobes/transphobes, but there are many people who are not homophobes/transphobes and don't raise their voices when homophobic/transphobic attacks occur. There is a huge need of tolerance, and pitifully enough you have to fight to get respected in this sense. I may not be a fan of bearded women, but I have nothing against them. If Conchita opens some people's eyes and make them see that you have to live and let live, it will be fine for me. I don't see this being bad for the LGTB people, because the homophobes/transphobes would continue to be homophoc/transphobic Conchita existed or not, but those who are not homophobes/transphobes may become a bit more tolerant with diversity and intolerant with intolerants.
