Moving through Germany
Well, you could place a bet on Martin Fourcade winning gold today. He did a terrible sprint and he knows that, so everytime he's angry he even more on fire. With this little margin it was clear he will be in for gold still. Germany placed 4 athletes to win a medal and luckily once again one came through, and the other didn't do way worse. Congrats Benni (:D) Doll xclap

And big congrats to Sebastian Samuelsson from Sweden. He shows that he's a future contender for the world cup. Big talent. Great for Sweden as they suffered from the retirements of their golden generation (Ferry, Bergman, Jonsson, Olofsson). I hope their journey hasn't end. 4 years ago their was no womens team and now there is a competitive team and Hanna Oeberg in an amazing condition. She's also very young, just like the rest of the team. Go for it!

Laura Dahlemeier winning again also did not came as a surprise, but we couldn't expect it as much as Fourcade going for it. Not surprised that Kuzmina raced to the podium, I expected Domracheva with them, but she couldn't handle the storm, so Bescond took her chance. Nice xup

And the womens ski jumping went as expected, not only the gold favourite won, but also the 2nd and 3rd placed from the WC grabbed silver and bronze. Deserved.

Day 3:
Biathlon (men's and women's pursuit): We had chances of medals in both races, but too many mistakes on the shooting ground ruined it. Sure, could blame the wind, but the conditions were unstable for everyone, so it's not really an excuse. For the women, Olsbu was up there again, but ended 4th in the end. For the guys, both Bjøntegaard and Tarjei Bø were fighting in the top at the very last shooting, but they collapsed there. Tarjei 4th, so we were a bit unlucky today. Congrats to Sweden tho, well done by Samuelsson!
On the quiz, would Norway get a medal in the women's pursuit? I had guessed no, but with Olsbu's result on the sprint, I was "worried" I would fail this one, so at least something good came out of that 4th place for me.

Figure skating (team event): I know absolutely nothing about figure skating, but looking at the results, it looks like Mikhail Kolyada's short program ruined it for the Russians. Canada might have won it anyway tho, so not saying it wasn't deserved. :)

Freestyle (men's moguls): Unlike the women, where Norway has had good results from both Hattestad and Traa, we have no history in men's moguls. We did have a guy there this year, who actually did great. Bad luck in the last final run, and he finished 6th, but that's a great result. :)

Ski jumping (women's normal hill): If you had asked me a year ago, I would have put money on Sara Takanashi winning the gold. And I never bet. But her reign seems to have ended, and a Norwegian has ascended to the throne. Maren Lundby has been very dominant in the World Cup, and her winning margins have been on old Takanashi levels in some competitions. So of course I had high hopes for her today. And she delivered! GOLD for Norway! :D But, I gotta admit, I feel a bit bad for Sara Takanashi. She's been the world's number one pretty much since the beginning of time, but 4th in Sochi, and 3rd today. I can't help but think she deserves to go down in history as an Olympic champion as well. Maybe next time?
This event was also on the quiz, would Maren Lundby win? I obviously guessed yes, so another point for me here. :)

Snowboard (women's slopestyle): We only had one athlete for the women, Silje Norendal, so she had more pressure on her than the 4 guys. Awful weather conditions tho, and Norendal was really scared before the competition, and tried to get it stopped. But it went on, and she finished 4th.

Speed skating (women's 1500 m): Ida Njåtun's 7th place here is actually our best result since Bjørg Eva Jensen's 4th place in 1980, so it's not a bad result. And Norway has never won a medal on this event, but we've had several 4th places.
This event was also on the quiz, which nation would win the gold? I had a look at the results this year, and figured Miho Takagi would win this, and guessed Japan. So I think the research cost me a point here, because I figure people who didn't research (and maybe even some who did) would put The Netherlands, and gain another point on me.

Day 3: 1 gold (and 3 4th places). Could have been better, but thanks to Maren Lundby, I'm not complaining. :D

Another gold for Sweden in Cross-country skiing! Stina Nilsson crused the opposition in the sprint event, and grabbed the win! First time ever Sweden wins a medal individually in womens sprint, finally! :D

Congrats Sweden on gold for amazing Stina Nilsson! xcheer xyaay Great job for Johannes Klæbo from Norway of course too, though it was expected. Anyway... to get the first medal in Olympics is always great. xclap

Latvia was so close to its first medal at these Olympics. Haralds Silovs got 4th place in speed skating. It's unexpected and great result from him, though 4th place is always painful. Still hopes for mass start which is Haralds' favorite discipline. xpray
Both our short track skaters qualified for the next stage, so some hopes there still alive too. :D

Day 4:
Alpine skiing (men's combined): Since the downhill part was cut short, our biggest favorites suffered a little bit, as they're not that good at slalom. Maybe we should have gone with more technical skiers than just Foss-Solevaag, but if the event had gone as planned, then we'd have a good team, so just unlucky I guess. Well deserved that Hirscher got his first Olympic gold tho. :)

Cross-country (men's and women's sprint): Sprint is the cross-country event I like the most (or dislike the least), and I also think this is the event where Norway is the least dominant. Wasn't paying as much attention to it as I could tho, as I was also watching short track and speed skating at the same time, but I saw Klæbo making his move, to secure his first Olympic gold. The first of what I expect to be many tbh.
These events were both on the quiz at work, would Sweden get a women's medal, and would Klæbo win? I knew Stina Nilsson was a favorite, and I also thought Klæbo would win, so I guessed yes on both, and got myself 2 points. :D

Curling (mixed doubles): This has been on the news in Norway for days, because our team are actually also in a personal relationship, not just a professional one. So when it looks like they argue like a couple, it's because they are. And they've had good results too, but in the semi, Canada turned out to be slightly better, and today they lost against the Russians, just missing out on a medal.

Luge (women's singles): Gotta admit, I didn't watch all 4 runs, but I saw some of it, and almost the entire 4th run, and there was a moment when I thought Germany would get all 3 medals. Nice to see Canada up there. Luge seems very difficult tho, I saw a lot of mistakes by a lot of people, but considering I find it hard to understand how any of them can see where they're going, that doesn't surprise me. Cool sport, but I still prefer bob and skeleton... Not a big Norwegian sport, in the Olympic history, there's been 2 Norwegians competing in women's singles, the last one in 1994.

Short track (women's 500 m): Dramatic final, and I didn't expect the Korean to be penalized, but based on what I saw in the other short track events today, the judges seem to know what they're doing, and I generally agreed, so it was probably correct. Also not a big Norwegian sport, we've never had a women competing on women's 500 (and altho I haven't checked yet, I doubt we've had anyone at short track at all tbh).

Snowboard (women's halfpipe): I overslept, so missed this, but I've seen Chloe Kim's 98.25 run, and it's obvious that she was the clear winner of this. Well done! No Norwegians in this sport for the last 2 Olympics tho, which is a bit sad.

Speed skating (men's 1500 m): 3 Norwegians here, but Johansson fell (after what was probably his best start ever), and Pedersen made a mistake, and his legs wouldn't cooperate after that, while Henriksen wasn't fast enough, so a rather disappointing day for us in this event. And another Dutch gold...
This was on the quiz too, would Norway get a medal? I thought yes, but because of the mistakes, I was wrong.

Day 4: 1 gold, 1 silver

Hoping for a great race by Nina Haver-Løseth in the slalom tomorrow (or tonight tbh), and maybe Maren Skjøld can surprise as well. And maybe Marte Olsbu and/or Tiril Eckhoff can do something in biathlon, and there's also the Nordic combined. Tomorrow could be a good Norwegian day too, but we'll see. :)

Backtracking to the figure skating team event, a few firsts were achieved...

* Eric Radford of Canada became the first openly gay athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold medal (he came out a few years ago)
* Adam Rippon is the first openly gay American to win a medal of any color (the US team won the bronze)

As a LGBT ally and Olympic fan, I salute these two and wish them well in their individual events!

Currently watching the pairs' short program in figure skating, the North Koreans were amazing!

They actually did great. I thought they were underscored a bit.

Just like in Sotchi, our flag-bearer Eric Frenzel won gold today! xcheer

Actually this season didnt go well for him so far but when it matters you can count on him. Just like our other combiners Frenzel had problems in ski jumping in beforehand but he made some extra training session on the hills a week before the Olympics... very professional attitude.. he laid the foundation on the hill today cause it was obvious he is a fast runner, better than Watabe and Klapfer. Congrats xheat

Norway flopped again... is it just me or is the Norwegian team underachieving a little so far? Nevertheless they won already 11 medals... that says a lot. They are so mighty in wintersports and I still think they will somehow win the medal table even though we are in a great position by now.

Well, we've had some bad luck. If I've counted correctly, we have 7 4th places now. Then there's the cutting of the alpine combined downhill part (which didn't help Jansrud or Svindal), the mistakes made in the speed skating yesterday, and our top guys in the nordic combined today (Graabak and Schmid) had very bad weather conditions in the ski jumping, and never stood a chance. So it could have been a lot better, but it's probably good that we don't win everything tbh. :p

Another gold & bronze in luge double xbow

our gold counter: 7

5 days are over and we almost reached the number of gold we won in Sotchi (8) xheat

Shame the luge events are almost over but we have excellent chances also in Bob and Skeleton

The schedule tomorrow is pretty full and amazing... we could win like 5, 6 medals if things go perfect. Luge team event is another excellent chance for gold even though we have to take care about Austria...

Dahlmeier is impressive right now and hopefully wins another medal.

Rebensburg is our biggest hope in Alpine Skiing and I expect her to win a medal if she doesnt tumble.

I've got no idea about figure skating but Savchenko and Massot might win a medal here.

Moreover I hope Dreesen can pull off another amazing downhill performance as he did in the super combination event. I am very hopeful he can win a medal even though the competition is strong.

...And then there is still another biathlon Men event... Not sure if we can repeat the successes of first two events but we have four medal contenders, I hope one of them gets through again. If Johannes Thingnes Bø finally gets his shit together, the first two places are probably given away already.

And Slovakia beat the one and only faves of OAR

About team relay in luge. Iirc the only times Germany lost a relay, was due to a penalty, so they should win. Austria and Canada did well in all 3 competitions so, it probably looks like this in the end.

Hope any biathlete can win us a medal as well and looking forward if Rebensburg can gain another gold (It'll be close, but she's the favourite).

Day 5:
This turned out to be a rather boring day for me, as most of the stuff I was looking forward to got cancelled today. I think I've managed to adjust to Korean time tho, I got up for the alpine skiing, and today I didn't go back to sleep when it was cancelled, despite falling asleep very late last night, so it hasn't been a completely pointless day. :)

Curling (men's): I try to only do medal events on these daily updates, but I need to mention the curling match between Norway and Japan, because it's on the quiz at work (the guy running the quiz plays curling himself, together with some others of my coworkers). So, would Norway beat Japan? My guess was yes, Norway is higher ranked, and tend to do well in these big competitions, but no. Japan played surprisingly well, and no point for me.

Luge (doubles): Seemed given to me that Germany would win this, but it was closer than I expected.
This was also on the quiz, would Germany win? I obviously guessed yes, because Germany and luge, and scored a point here.

Nordic combined (normal hill/10 km): I normally don't watch this event, but it's the Olympics, and nothing else of interest was happening, so today I watched it. But it didn't go too well. The wind unsurprisingly caused some issues, and Graabak and Schmid (our best guys) suffered (and so did Riessle and Rydzek too). Very bad luck, as the weather got better again for Watabe. So at this point, I thought it was over. But Riiber skied better than I thought, so we had a chance after all, but he just missed out on a medal.
This was also on the quiz, would Norway get the silver? I thought Schmid would, and guessed yes, but was obviously wrong.

Snowboard (men's halfpipe): No Norwegians doing halfpipe for the guys either, but it was still a good final. First of all, I hope Totsuka is ok, that crash didn't look good. Some great runs, but I'd say Shaun White definitely deserved the win. Great stuff! :D

Speed skating (women's 1000 m): 2 Norwegians here, and Njåtun did ok, but not good enough for a medal unfortunately. Bøkko was very disappointed. Another Dutch gold, which is hardly surprising. :p

Day 5: No medals. :(

Much more interesting day for me tomorrow (if the weather cooperates). Snowboardcross, 2 events in alpine skiing, 2 events in biathlon, and also the team relay in luge. I better get some sleep first. :)
