What a day...
Day 6:
Alpine skiing (men's downhill): This event has been a bit of a nemesis for Norway. We've had a lot of good athletes in downhill over the years, with loads of medals and good results, but we've never won the gold in the Olympics. But finally, the long awaited gold, thanks to Aksel Lund Svindal!
And Kjetil Jansrud also on the podium with a silver, this was amazing. Too bad I couldn't give it my full attention, as I was also watching skeleton and snowboardcross, but still, amazing!
And this event was on the quiz, would Norway get the gold? I had faith, guessed yes, and got a point.
Alpine skiing (women's giant slalom): And just when you thought the day couldn't get better. Sure, Ragnhild Mowinckel had a great result in the first run, and a medal was possible, but as I mentioned earlier, Norwegian women hasn't won a medal in alpine skiing since 1936, so there was a risk that we could get another 4th place. Or worse. But Mowinckel had another great run, climbed two spots, and was only beaten by Mikaela Shiffrin in the end.
And that was perfectly ok with me, I like Shiffrin, and she deserved the win, but of course I would have preferred to see Mowinckel on the top of the podium.
Biathlon (men's and women's individual): To start with the women, it was a rather disappointing day. Way too many misses, so even if Eckhoff had the 2nd best cross-country time of the day, it just didn't go well for any of them. 23rd, 40th, 43rd and 71st; the numbers say it all. So, it's a good thing we have the guys as well, and especially the Bø brothers.Tarjei was fighting for the win up until the last shooting, but 2 misses ruined it for him. But then there was his younger brother, Johannes Thingnes Bø. Landertinger and Fak made it exciting for a long time, and there were a couple of Swedes in the fight too, and these days, you can't rule the Swedes out of any biathlon events (congrats on the win for Öberg btw). But in the end, nobody beat Johannes, and he made the day historical, with 3 golds for Norway. Incredible!
The men's event was on the quiz, would Fourcade win the gold? I actually thought he would, but he messed that up on the last shooting, and I lost a point there. I'm ok with that tho.
Cross-country (women's 10 km): Again, I'm not that into cross-country skiing, and even tho I had the race on, I wasn't really paying attention to it. But I did notice that we had a surprise winner in Ragnhild Haga, and that Marit Bjørgen shared the bronze with Pärmäkoski, all adding up to the historical Olympic day for Norway.
Also an event on the quiz, would Marit Bjørgen win the gold? I didn't think she would, and got a point there.
Figure skating (pairs): I caught some of the short program, and saw that Bruno Massot had messed it up for Germany, so I didn't think Germany would end up winning this. A medal, yes, but probably not a gold. But, they've apparently done some great free skating, and they did win it. I guess I should be impressed, but I know so little about this sport...
And this was also on the quiz (it's only 3 a day, but the men's downhill was originally on day 1, so it was 4 today), which nation would win the gold? I thought a pair from OAR would take this, but no, so no point here.
Luge (team relay): Because of real life needing some attention today, I haven't actually seen this yet, but I've seen who got the medals, and I can't say I'm surprised. Planning to watch this tomorrow tho.
Snowboard (men's snowboardcross): One of my favorite events in these Olympics, and I saw all of it. Including the seeding runs. Sure, the alpine skiing and skeleton made it a bit complicated, but that's life. One TV and 2 computer screens came in handy here. And it'll be the same tomorrow as well. A LOT of action, and also some very bad crashes. I hope Nikolay Olyunin is ok, but some dude on the live stream said he thought Olyunin had broken his leg, and that would suck. These guys are nuts tho, Cameron Bolton did the small final with what seemed like a freshly broken arm.
I would understand it if he had qualified for the final, but to go thru all that pain just to fight for a 7th place? Wow! Anyway, despite the lack of Norwegians in this event, I still had someone to support, Regino Hernandez from Spain. And even tho he hasn't had the greatest results this season, I had faith in him, and he delivered!
Escaped most of the crashes, and made it all the way to the final, where he got a bronze. Awesome!
Speed skating (men's 10000 m): Missed this one, because of the previously mentioned real life. One Norwegian taking part, but he finished second to last.
No Dutch gold tho, which at this point is a bit surprising, but of course the Canadian winner had to be a Dutch. Bergsma was close tho, but I figure Bloemen had the advantage of knowing what time he was up against, altho it probably didn't matter.
Day 6: 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze! I haven't checked, but they've said on TV that this is the best day ever in the Olympics for Norway, and I don't find that too hard to believe. This was amazing!
