The last entry I liked was 2012, but that was partly because it was charming and fun in the right way, but the last actual great entry they sent was indeed "Mamo"...

Russia 2013 and forward has been boring, dated and safe as heck... I want something Russian, something more daring or interesting or local sounding.

Yeah I agree with 2012 part. It was really enjoyable for me back then but I can never take it as a serious song or act.
And yes sadly Russia's been going that dull and uninspired pace ever since 2013. They have good music industry and writers and I am sure Yulia deserves something as authentic and challenging as her character, presence and story.

Seems legit ...

Well they better come up with a MUCH MUCH MUCH better song than that dreadful mess they tried to enter last year, and she better sing in Russian since she can't pronounce English even if her life depended on it, and they better have good backing vocalists ready to hide the fact that she's a pretty bad singer. The only way I could see this work out is if they send a genuine Russian ballad or going novelty as in 2012 (but the second option could have some social justice warriors scream that Russia "makes fun of a disabled person", even if that wouldn't be the case, so I think a ballad in Russian would be the safest choice). Quite frankly it could turn out to be one of the better Russian entries of the past decade if it's done in a good way... but then it needs to be proper Russian, not some import, not some Disney faux-peace ballad or something in English or "wannabe western" at all.

I sincerely hope she'll sing in Russian because 1) she's way more at ease with it obviously, she said it herself last year, and 2) Russian is so beautiful it could really be an added value to the song.

Fingers crossed for the song itself: I could picture a touching Russian-sounding ballad with a classy orchestration (no Disney please!), or - like I said before - an entry one doesn't expect her to defend: I'd love to see her sing a moody electro-pop number with a sophisticated production along the lines of Latvia 2016 or Germany 2011 for instance. xpray

Second this!

1) Russian
2) Genuine ballad with local sound or motives

^
I think that would fit her best...

If they go down the same route as last year... well... no further comments

I don't think they will. Sending a musically and/or lyrically similar song would be pointless in terms of strategy imo.

Let's hope they surprise us in a good way. And no more manufactured crap meant to be the "ideal" winning song please, Russia could truly benefit from showing a more genuine facet of their musical wealth.

Yeah, I'm always surprised that such a huge country with a beautiful language and a diverse and interesting culture would year after year settle for dated wannabe western Pop songs in English that are only manufactured for ESC with little connection (if any) to Russian music, modern or traditional... it's just sad and waste of time and effort.

I admit, I was wrong...
It‘s hard, but I‘ll try to give her a chance. Let‘s wait for the song.

WOW!!!

Jaysus I guess Russia doesn't want to win this year. It's a very interesting thing they've done by picking her. I mean if they didn't pick her they risk the ire of a few thousand eurofans but could have had an excellent singer and won in Lisbon, giving them a wonderful opportunity to show a positive and state-sponsored side of Russia to a world that has a negative view of the country. On the other hand by choosing "the poor disabled girl that those mean Ukrainians banned" they really can spin their own stubbornness to their benefit.
