Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

Well, terrible songs has been saved by good stagings in the past. Especially as Russia has the biggest televote-attraction of all countries since Turkey left. If the song will be good enough, top 5-ish will be guaranteed, the jury-bias will be the only obstacle here.

True, but I don't think many televoters will support something as terrible as their 2017 failed attempt was... I know they are the biggest diaspora gainer now that Turkey is long gone, but even to capitalize on that it needs to sound atleast decent...

We will know better when the rehearsals begin. Right now we can enjoy Australias fair jury-placement from last year. ^^

Russia is usually higher than 4th. By default they are rated high because of their voting power. There is far less confidence in them this year, and rightly so. Feels like they just can't be bothered this year.

Jesus Christ didn't save us from Samoylova. Last year we were sooo closeeee to flop, but thanks god we havent participated. So here it is 2018 - first year of russian DNQ.
BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I can understand that its her dream and so on, gosh but dreaming is good only when it doesnt put into ashes dreams of thousands of russian fans who wanted to see someone .. eh, more talented.

I would be genuinely curious to see the alternate universe where Russia don't select her again - wonder what the reception would've been.

As it stands, anyway, this could be worse. She's got an interesting voice, and "Flame Is Burning" is my runaway favorite of the 4 peace ballads this decade, in no small part thanks to her performance (not that I think it's some kind of masterpiece).

May I just say, that all of Yulia that we have heard so far was heavily auto-tuned or even playback. As a matter of fact, the disease she's got weakens all her muscles - included those that you need for talking (esp. articulation), breathing and singing. I know this because I have known two people in my life suffering from the same thing, who sadly passed away some years ago. (one of them getting a cold and his muscles being too weak to cough, he suffocated, the other one also because of her chest muscles that became too weak to breathe)
You hear the articulation problems already in "Flame is burning". I have every respect for her to expose herself to such a big audience, but I can assure you there has to be done a lot to mask the vocal difficulties that are genuinely linked to this disease.

This mayn't be an issue at all. I mean, she performed her entry in Crimea without facing any difficulties, thus she might slay us in May. Who knows? ;)

We don't know under what technical circumstances that appearance in Crimea took place. I just told my personal and direct experience with people having this disease and what they told me about their medical condition and the consequences. Being Russia (just think of the way they dealt with doping at the olympics), I just think they will use whatever they can to cover those difficulties that just are there because of her illness.

Mrm yes, if it's as charming as "Flame Is Burning". I want another beautiful ballad with a Russian feel. I'm glad they kept their promise and are sending Yulia again. Go queen Yuliaxheart I wish there wasn't all this political mess surrounding her participation though, as it makes me feel a bit awkward rooting for her.

"Flame is Burning" could've ended up on the top 10 tbh, this wasn't as bad as everyone thought. Moreover, it's.... ermmmm.. Russia.

She was burning like fire last year, now it's time to rise from the ashes with some goth metal. No one would expect that, would they?

Honestly she totally looks like she was one of those mid 00's emo/goth kids.

Flame was burning is perfect for funerals and all Saints' day, not for Eurovision. I don't have high hopes this song will be any better.

Since 90% of her votes would be same like our Monika back in 2015, I feel like paraEurovision is not that bad idea. You'd vote there for the one you're most sorry for. While on normal Eurovision, all acts like those 2 would flop big time cause the songs sucked.

I was not talking about the quality of the song, but I (partly) agree with you on that. ;)

Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

I would really love to see (well, mostly to HEAR) Yulia sing her song in russian. Both because a bit of language diversity would be good - but mostly because her Flame is Burning was ruined by her english. I dont know whether her illness is also a contributing part of her pronounciation problem.... but anyway - please in russian!
