This was definitely high-level discussion.

I didn't start it, it's so evident that 12 years old German has provoked me all of the sudden..

After having read lots of Comments from you in the Russia17 Thread, I became interested in your age. Nothing more ;)

Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

In case you felt offended by my "ridiculous"-comment - I apologize! ;)

Of course everybody is free to do, what he wants. It's just that wanting to do something and be able to do it are two things. Rock music involves naturally a lot of body action, not only when performing on stage but also to produce a credible sound. And that's something that is out of reach for her, no matter how much she wants to do that (if that was the case anyway, which we have not the slightest hint for, btw.). You also don't expect a squirrel to be a fantastic swimmer. That doesn't mean to devalue the squirrel.

Every vocal coach will tell you if your natural vocal register or timbre is suitable for a specific kind of music. And Yulia's voice is surely not a rock voice. It is too soft, too gentle, it lacks the rough, edgy nature. That has nothing to do with being boring - it's being realistic. Making her sing rock would come across like a bad clowns act, like she was doing a parody of rock. Her whole personality has NOTHING of a rocker! You don't just sing rock, that's a lifestyle!

If she wants to impress the biggest TV-audience with her act, she will take the song that matches best her capacities and the nature of her voice and that will be - very likely something slow or perhaps mid tempo, because her bodily restrictions will not allow her to perform a wild, uptempo, rhythmic or rocky song. Her last ballad was not tearful btw. nor did I say her next one will be. (or did you refer to my "cheesy", then you have a point )
Russia has so meticulously designed her narrative / trademark as an artist and her act that they will not spoil her chances by giving her a song where she cannot do her best.

A part from this - I'm not a fan of hers musically and I didn't find her credible with her first attempt, but that's a matter of taste.

No, don't apologize, for I didn't feel offended, just surprised you didn't understand I was low-key joking

I agree with most of what you said there, I simply meant she might as well go where one wouldn't expect her to musically-speaking this time, not necessarily sing a rock song but a composition that - provided it suits her vocal range - is not your everyday unremarkable ballad. Since they sent "Flame Is Burning" last year, I'd like them to surprise us with a different type of mood in Lisbon.

While it is likely that she'll defend another ballad (because Russians haven't been really daring lately), I personally hope it'll be one that can be praised for what it is: a good composition with polished arrangements. Whether they go electro-pop, ethno or symphonic, I don't care so long as it's not cheap or generic. If her team comes up with a "What If 2.0", they can cancel their flight right away imo

By the way, she indeed doesn't need to perform vocal exercises to impress, most top ten entries weren't vocally-demanding last year. If the song is intrinsically strong, she may do quite well. Channel 1 must be aware of her abilities, hence why I'd be disappointed if they didn't up their game accordingly song-wise.

If fits the :ru: thread perfectly, considering the cheap tricks used by their broadcaster.

You sir, win the thread.

The composer of the song is Leonid Gutkin, the man who also wrote these songs:

xpuke

Exactly the stuff I don't want from Russia (or any other country in ESC for that matter)... cheesy pointless soulless dated ballads without purpose ... yuck...

So basically we'll end up with another mess like last year and not a proper Russian ballad (which is what would be good for Yulia)...

Re: RUSSIA 2018 - Yulia Samoylova

Ok, my enthusiasm levels have gone down quite significantly as I absolutely LOATHE "What If" and "A Million Voices", especially "What If" (Jesus, kill it with fire).

I found "Flame Is Burning" to be extremely charming and honest. I know it was a controversial opinion, as so many hated it, and the fact Yulia was being quite clearly used as a political tool. She's still a human being though and I felt her connection to the piece and her passion. I want her to again sing a ballad that sounds Russian, and by Jove can we for the love of everything holy, sacred and wonderful PLEASE NOT go down the Russian peace ballad route. Thank you. You can dig yourself out of this hole in a tasteful fashion, not slinging mud in people's eyes on the way out whilst smiling.

Preach! Leonid Gutkin also wrote "Flame Is Burning", so I hope he went for something along those lines rather than for a sequel of those plastic messes. At least, last year's entry sounded musically Russian and more authentic in comparison.

Enough with those Americanised peace ballads already, is that all they can come up with? Will we have one every two years? Yuk! For their sake, I hope not.

I would second that as well (even though that was Kirkorov's work). I listened to it yesterday and thought it was truly underrated by the Eurovision fandom. It was catchy, melodic, yet not anonymous. Also, it had a Russian spark to it. :) The Twins did a great job that year imo.

Oh, I didn't know that. Now my outburst looks a bit sillyxshifty But yeah, please can he avoid the American sounding peace ballad route. Those entries were so plastic and cringe inducing. "What If" ranks high among my most hated Eurovision entries ever. "Flame Is Burning" I thought was worlds apart.

Sammy Do you remember our recent conversation about how Yulia and rock music could not be compatible? :) I've just stumbled upon one of her interviews with ESCKAZ.com last year, and burst into laughter thinking about you while reading the following lines:

"(...) Looking at my tender image, no one will believe it but I was singing in a hard rock band. I was the one who founded the band. All other musicians were young men, older than me, but in spite of that, they had to go through a very strict casting."

Funny, isn't it? I wonder what it sounded like though!
