Maybe she sought more exposure, or maybe her band disbanded. I don't know

I'm so expecting Julia to slay us all in May.

Sammy Do you remember our recent conversation about how Yulia and rock music could not be compatible? :) I've just stumbled upon one of her interviews with ESCKAZ.com last year, and burst into laughter thinking about you while reading the following lines:

"(...) Looking at my tender image, no one will believe it but I was singing in a hard rock band. I was the one who founded the band. All other musicians were young men, older than me, but in spite of that, they had to go through a very strict casting."
!

That sounds a bit like my little niece when she told me at the age of eleven that she already had had five boyfriends. When I asked her if the boys in question knew about it, she thought for a moment and then said: „probably not“ xrofl2

The man who wrote What if and A million voices,
was also the composer of this song:

I love "A million voices", don't get the hate here  it was 2nd afterall...

It could have been the winner with one million points, doesn't change the fact that it was a soulless pointless ballad... atleast it was better than What If and I like Polina, but still they go for the guy that brought some of the lamest Russian entries to the contest? xshrug

Any hopes I had for a more genuine Russian ballad seem almost ruined by the fact that the guy who is responsible for "What If", "A Million Voices", "Falling Stars" and "Flame is Burning" is involved in this project.

Well Polina is not Russia, ok? She believed in the song and the message it carried, she sang her heart out, she was fearless and fabulous. I don't know maybe I love it because of Polina but it's one of my favourite Russian entries and nothing will change it..
"What if" was much worse, calculated, Disney-ish, and nearly plagiarism.
I don't care if they send Russian stuff or not, Eurovision turned into Anglovision years ago.. Many countries suffer from sending songs in native language including mine ("Jestem" hit the bottom), in case of Yulia I agree though, she sings much better in her mother tongue.
Polina has amazing songs in Russian too, I hope someday she will be back with her real style.

Well, Polina did what she could with that ballad, but this is not "The Voice of Europe", if we only judge songs based on the performers then they could sing covers if original songs don't matter xshrug

Well, I care, and with "Russian" I didn't only mean the language use, but style of entry. Some nonsense dated Disney ballads have absolutely nothing to with Russia, Europe or music of today... it's completely unrelated to both time and culture. Polina was a good choice of someone who entered with something unrelated to her actual music.

Jestem flopped because the performance turned into a mess and because juries hate Poland, Yulia can't pronounce English so it's just embarrassing if she'll stick to it.

I read this in a german Forum. But dont know the Source:

Julia Samoilova will perform mid-tempo song in English according to her radio interview. The singer noted that she is currently working hard with teachers, especially focusing on English pronunciation. When asked if new song better than last year, the artist replied: „For me it’s better, it’s closer to what I’d like to make myself.“ The singer only confirmed that her production was directed by producer Alexei Golubev, noting that she was scoffed because she posted this information in the social network before getting permission from the broadcaster. The singer noted that taking into account the song and the staging, she counts on the competition for a place no lower than the fifth. The premiere of the contest song will be held in March, at the time of heads of delegations meeting. Speaking about Eurovision 2017, Samoilova noted that she liked performance of Salvador Sobral. As for the nearest future, Julia also has plans to release an autobiography book about her life before ESC begins.

No lower than fifth? She's ambitious. But we should first see the song. It's Russia so getting to Top-5 with something decent is not hard for them.

Sounds like it will be awful... so no surprise here...

And I was ready to give them the benefit of the doubt... maybe next year... but then again it's been almost a decade since Russia had an actual good entry 5+ years since they had something enjoyable (the grannies).

Didn't you hear something Russian in "Flame is burning"?. It has some Russian flavour in it..
Then again, when I think of real Russian entries "Viechniy strannik", "Primadonna" and "Mamo" come to my mind... Or English songs with Russian accent, like :ru: 2006 :D
It could make sense for Russia to send such songs only if other countries did the same thing. Very local sounding songs (:pl:2014 comes to my mind) struggle to get into the top 10 while overproduced, "cold" English stuff like :au:2016,2017 gets hyped by juries every time as you pointed out many times. So it's not surprising that Russia goes this way and majority of countries do.

She aims for a Top5 Finish, so I bet its gonna be a Highquality-Entry.

It's Russia, they end top. 5 with nonsense and we both know it xshrug

It was a Joke of Course. Russia has already about 110 Points (80TV and 30 JV from AZ, BY, and MD) safe, but she will need about 300-320 Points to reach the Goal.

"Flame is Burning" was an utterly dreadful produced ballad that sounded like it was produced in some low budget home studio by a 10 year old and a singer whose vocals need heavy vocoder effects and still sounds bad in studio version with English that sounded anything but English ... maybe that's "Russian" but I think they can do better? In fact for such a huge country, the largest in the contest, we should expect something better no?

I do agree with the rest though, but then again none of the previous winners were "standard" and juries pushing Australia has more to do with EBU agenda to coup them into the contest and make them a permanent member, because few countries gets such support (even if they send similar stuff), but yeah I "get" why Russia sends these nonsense songs, but Yulia can't handle English and seems so lost in this that for her sake it would be better with something more local in a language she manages.
