Well, I wont go to deep into the fact that FdC is a complete and utter chore for me to listen through each year - this year not much different, but then it just doesn't compute with my taste much. However, there was one big stand out for me personally, which is 'Cotovia' by Diana VIlarinho. It is easily going high amongst my (admittedly small) list of FdC songs I love. The song is great, Seems it might not quite be a favourite to win but it's definitely a song i will be going back to listen to

Honestly, the more I listen to the songs, the more difficult it is to try to make a top

So for now I leave (in no order) the songs that I liked from this edition:
Capital da Bulgária – Lisboa
Fernando Daniel – Medo
HENKA – I Wanna Destroy U
JOSH – Tristeza
Peculiar – Adamastor
Diana Vilarinho – Cotovia

I like it but a little less:
Xico Gaiato – Ai Senhor!
A Cantadeira – Responso à Mulher

10 years ago, our national final opened submissions around the third week of January and the result was a huge mess.
Just after bad results and 2013 absence from the contest.
This may sound cheesy. However, the older fans will relate. It is quite emotional to see where we are now and how it was back then.
Carla Bugalho and her team did great on this field. That is why she is still present at the Executive Commission of Eurovision.

(Just look at this mess. Studio, song, everything)

This is kinda dumb but I found it an interesting tidbit. So yesterday someone mentioned that Henka sounds like Poppy and I’ve seen other people on youtube and reddit saying the same, but there was a comment that mentioned that Poppy was luso-american and I was like “wait, what?”. So I checked and she was born in Boston, Massachusetts, (Massachusetts has the biggest Portuguese diaspora in the US) and her last name is Pereira, so it checks out, but the curious thing is that Henka’s last name is also Pereira.
I’m not in any way implying that they are related, Pereira is a very common surname in Portugal and Brazil, but I think it’s a funny coincidence.

Call me delululu but when I listened to Festival da Cancao's songs today I got the first "winner vibes" this season.

If you ask me, I'd still make "Zjerm" win for Albania but it will be probably too progressive, bold, artsy-fartsy and chaotic for the juries and the general public alike ... But JOSH really blew me away. What a beautiful piece of music. Mesmerising voice, beautifully arranged production.. What a song! - Of course, we don't know how the performances will look like and if Europe is about to feel ballads in May but if the stars align, this could be a very touching, stunning, breathtaking moment in Basel.

Apart from Josh, I loved Peculiar (tiny parts makes me wonder why they have to sound like that but overall, it's a 9/10 for me) and Henka is very bold, interesting and got the "IT factor" to make people remember everything about the act, for sure. It's impressive, catchy and shocking at parts but it will also be off-putting for juries (I can see Portugal easily qualify with her, though).
Xico is outstanding, hypnotising and absolutely compelling but dunno, the structure of the song and his pic gives me "Telemoveis" performance-disaster-vibes (?)

Diana is absolutely breathtaking as well but I think it's a bit too repetitive at parts? Her vocals, the instrumental are 12-points-worthy, though. A Cantadeira's and TOTA got a good sons as well (not very competitive, though, imo).

My Top 7 so far:
Josh - Tristeza 12/10
Xico Gaiato – Ai Senhor! 10/10
Peculiar – Adamastor 9/10
Diana Vilarinho – Cotovia 8/10
Henka - I Wanna Destroy U 8/10
A Cantadeira – Responso à Mulher 7/10
TOTA – á-tê-xis 7/10

If he does not like... let's send it!

So, normally I don't even watch Wiwibloggs anymore, but this got me curious and.... lol
I have a somewhat complicated relationship with "I wanna destroy u" too, because I like the Genre but there are some things that put me off. But as always, Wiwibloggs are... such a void of any knowledge in regards to music. He couldn't guess the Genre of this if his life depended on it. And "Evanescence"? Lol. Well, if you only ever know of two Bands in existance, that will happen I guess.

Either way, sorry for being negative: Portugal has an awesome selection again and I can't even decide on a favorite. Several entries that are great and competitive IMO (yes, that's two different things), and I'm very curious for the live versions hred

I didn't saw the video, but the only critique I have about the song is that it has a lot of sudden mood changes and the staging needs to emphasize those changes but make the song feel like whole at the same time, it's a tough job to find the balance and I am a bit worried about the broadcaster capabilities to not screw Henka over. I do not know how she will stage it, but I trust that her and her team will bring a eurovision-ready product to the nf. Also I've been checking some of the live performances when she was the frontwoman of Derange and she is a monster on stage.

I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I Wanna Destroy You is not doing it for me. It doesn't go hard enough and it sounds sort of muddled?

Maybe in a live performance it will be better but I'm not convinced - and there are far too many quality songs in this selection.

Fernando Daniel sang "Medo" - his participation in the Festival da Canção - in Beja, last night

his vocal power is so impressive.
Far from my favorite, but if this wins, a revamp might be a good idea
Thanks for sharing the video, but unless Fernando Daniel had already produced a revamp and for some reason it wasn't ready to submit to RTP before their deadline a revamp is impossible.
RTP keeps attaching Festival da Canção to the anniversary of the broadcaster and they end up always choosing the song at the same time Sweden chooses theirs, meaning that they have basically the monday and tuesday after to submit all the info regarding their participation to EBU.
Portugal needs a eurovision-ready package, song and staging, and sorry to be a hater, but Fernando Daniel's song is very basic and his vocals aren't enough to qualify, the televote has shown time and time again that they will vote for bad vocals if the song and staging are fun and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Fernando Daniel's staging at Festival da Canção something like be this, him alone on the stage with a guitar.

Edit: Someone mentioned on Josh's lyric video that his staging will be done by the same person that did iolanda's staging, I couldn't find any post by either Josh or the choreographer confirming it, but they do follow each other on instagram.

Tumblr, mostly.
Excellent stuff, like always Portugal 👍

I don't want to get too attached to my personal faves (which are Xico, A Cantadeira and Emmy Curl), because I *think* Fernando Daniel is comfortably taking this, which wouldn't upset me. (He's a bit further down the list for me but still highish)

I would not be so sure about Fernando Daniel. FC jury is usually a bit apart from the popular/mainstream industry in Portugal. So, giving him a 6 or 7 points will not be an issue.
Josh just needs to take a good performance and will take the jury 12. I am sure of that.
Televote side will be the biggest question mark. There is Henka (people outside the bubble are talking/engaging about her), Fernando is Fernando (our biggest pop singer), NAPA (they are from Madeira island and people really put money into their artists) and let's not forget about Marco Rodrigues (pretty popular fado singer along the boomers and grannies).
