I was very surprised that Slovenia didn't get to the final this year. Especially after some of the let down entries got through to the final...

a real shock non-qualifier to me. And how did Eva Boto only place 17h in the semi-final?
I hope that this result won't prevent Slovenia from sending entries in their mother tongue...

Yeah, that's my biggest fear that Slovenia will go back to English :(

But looking at the top. 10 of 2012, 4 entries were 100% in native language, and 2 were partly in native/local languages... that's more than half.

Yes, that's why we must invite all the countries to take Serbia, Albania, Estonia and Spain as models for next year ;)

As to Slovenia, I hope that their representatives don't think the language was the reason they failed. Personally, I guess that the allocation draw was just hopeless: the five big balkan ballads put in the same semi-final just pushed people to vote only for some of them, and I think that they decided to vote for the most famous singers: Zeljko, Kaliopi and Maya Sar. Even though she didn't qualify, Nina Badric was also famous, she hasn't had a too bad result, so only the young Eva has suffered from this. That's my guess.

That's my guess aswell, and I think if Slovenia would have entered the first semi without all those other Balkan ballads playing eachother out, it would have probably qualified.

But broadcaster's tend to draw irrational conclusions at time, but I hope they think rationally here. It would be a pity if we got some random English song from them next year.

Good point there. We did predict one or two balkan ballads to crash out. I guess Eva failed for being the 'least experenced, hence least known2

I have some good news from Greece.
Two days ago,we had national elections.
The winners, were also the goverment at the period 2004-2009 (when Greece tried the best to Esc),
so I dont think they will withdraw the country from the contest.

I think that your fear will come true. I'm almost sure that we'll send a song in English next year..

I know, and I supported Slovene this year (it totally suits the song). I'm just afraid that RTV (national TV) won't even look at this statistics, they'll just select English, because we failed with our national language this year.

You say that wikipedia is the source, but it doesn't have Ukraine nor Slovenia as the confirmed countries.

Well, I should underline that Wikipedia is the main source, but also other sort of reliable sources (given here for instance) are good enough ;)

Yes, in addition, if I'm not wrong Slovenian people voted for Verjamem while there were also songs in English in the National final. It might be for the melody in itself but if they didn't want their mother tongue to be represented, they could have chosen something else. So please RTV, think twice :(

Besides, Kryptonite, do you know if there were reactions from Slovenian people when they translated the song of Maja Keuc?

You're not wrong. There were 2 songs in English ("Run" by Eva Boto and "Love hurts" by Eva & Nika Prusnik), but they didn't qualify to the super final. Like you already pointed out, voters mostly voted because of the melody, not because of the language. But yeah, if our national language bothered us, we wouldn't vote for a song in Slovene.

Well, if I remember it correctly, I think that the comments were mostly positive. There were some negative ones, of course, but mostly positive. Even Maja herself told that she feels more comfortable singing in English than in Slovene.

People here often think that we don't have any chances to qualify with our mother tongue, but these people aren't ESC fans so they aren't aware of the statistics. I'm not saying that we should always sing in Slovene on Eurovision, because there might be some songs that sound better in English. But in most cases, Slovene is totally appropriate and should definitely be used.

Ok, I understand. I didn't say that every entry has to be in Slovene neither ;), the choice of the language must be made according to the music type (like Verjamem, it'd have sounded a bit flat in English) and NOT according to the results. I was saying that this year's failure must not be the reason not to send songs in Slovene anymore.

I agree with you GRE. I had some doubts about the Greek participation next year but now it's a little impossible to withdraw Greece from the contest after the election of the new government.
