Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

So in your opinion the song would have also won with any other artist?

I'm not QwaarJet, but if it was performed by another artist with as much charm and charisma as Alexander, then yes, I think it would've still had a good chance. It wasn't my favourite of the NF (I had it at about #4 and I've rated it 5 in the poll), but I can't deny that the live performance does elevate it, and live performances are something you've got to consider at Eurovision.

Juries and televoters alike base their votes on live performances, not studio versions - so a mediocre song improved by a strong performer and stage act can earn top marks (e.g. Moldova last year), while a much-loved song with a weak performance can flop in its semi (e.g. Macedonia last year).

I'd personally have Norway sitting at longer odds than they are now - I think it could do well, but not win - but regardless, Eurovision is absolutely the sort of thing where live charisma helps you out, so you have to take that into consideration.

Yes, and the song has potential to do extremely well. Stop assuming that just because you don't like the song that it won for non-song related reasons.

I also have stopped wondering why people vote for this and that song - okay, of course, sometimes I still do. But it's a taste thing. And I have to admit, I like surprises, even when I am discontent with the choice. I just hope that at least the songs that are halfway bearable stand on top. And even when I don't like the Norway song, Rybak at least has a funny performance. A plus point.

Initially I gave an 8, but after those undeserved 0s, I gave a 12.

Also a hype thing, and and an effects thing.

To be realistic his song is a NQ but because of his name will be a borderline qualifier..

Majority of the songs this year is pretty much ballad. That's How You Write A Song is not a masterpeace but it has the advantage of standing out besides other ballads. I wouldn't call this song going to the final "just because of his name".

"so many ballads this year" is totally the eurovision equivalent of "this year i will go through with my ney year resolutions" isn't it? y'all say it every year and it is a damn LIE every year lol

the real question here is why diogo piçarra was made to quit portugal for plagiarism when alexander rybak just kind of copied aquarela do brasil for his hook. in the words of kennedy davenport, i'm just saying.

I'd say it was kinda true in 2015. There were a lot of ballads that year. But yeah, I don't really understand people making the complaint this year - apart from a slight glut of midtempo chart pop, this is essentially "genre diversity: the year".

This song is below that of 2009

but it's pure, esssential entertainment and antistress positive song !

This can easily end up in the top 10, both the audience and the jury

If Moldova could last year, then Ribak could be this year too.

Good luck Ribak

I'm being nice here - this feels like a JESC top 5 entry performed by an overly confident 9 y/o. His theatrics worked for Fairytale pretty well even though I dislike that song with passion, but this time it feels forced and all over the place. 0 points

Moldova last year was a, simplistic song but genuine and unpretencious, yet catchy and unlike many others it was a music genre that doesn't top the mainstream charts nowadays.
This is more like"Ok, Bruno Mars is so popular and succesful, I will do something similar, show off my violin for five seconds because that's what people remember about me and put my fake Bel Ami smile during the whole song" ... the result is an annoying manufactured entry, with no quality at all.

No quality? Be serious. You are allowed to dislike the song, but looking at it objectively, to say it has NO quality at all, is pushing bounds of reality. It's extremely well made, and could very well do as well (or better) than Sunstroke Project last year. It'll have huge family appeal.

Well I am not going to start a philosophical discusion about quality, and I don't have to explain myself. If it does do well in Lisbon, congratulations, but it doesn't make it any better or prove its quality in my eyes.

Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

The fact that That's How You Write a Song won yesterday was not a big surprise, Did it win because of Alexanders name? I really dont think so. He is well known in Norway, but it's been a long time since he was in the hit lists.
I am not a big fan of the song, but I think this worked better live than in the studio version. I guess it's the kind of song that actually works better on stage, especially in a ESC context. Alexander does not have the best vocal abilities, but his vocals were not bad at all yesterday. Alexander's lyrics have never been very intellectual/deep. I guess this song is very representative of him.
His stage performance may come across as cringy or childish or embarrassing to some. But to lots others he comes across charming and youthful on stage.

All in all; its not my favourite song, but I am fully able to support our entry this year. I am predicting a rather good result for Alexander - much better than he seems to get in this forum (and better than I would have given him).

As another self-appointed omnipotent judge of what has and does not have quality, this song has no quality.

But on the other hand, it's pretty enjoyable in a "how the mighty have fallen way." That's worth a lot to me. 7 points.

Good Lord! I don't know if this is horrible or genious. It has half-time number written all over it, so this is like Sweden sending Love, Love, Peace, Peace. Only this isn't nearly as good.

Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

For me was this the 4th best (1. Vidar Villa, 2. Stella & Alexandra, 3. Alejandro Fuentes) yesterday, and what a joy it was. xheya
This is a Alexander Rybak song in every way and it´s refreshing to have a artist just saying as it is. His songs are easy to understand and deep in their own way.
I think this can do very well in Eurovision and that´s what it is made for. It´s made for the 3 minutes on stage, not for the top of the charts. There are no bigger Eurovision-fan than Rybak and that makes his victory even sweeter. xlove

A detailed video will come out from me soon, cause I find that easier than making a long post. But this get´s 12 points from me and I can´t believe I am 100% Norway´s entry two years in a row. xfaint Maybe playing with a Ida Maria beachball in Spektrum, while not being fully sober, as he performed a final time helped on the ranking. Cause that was a moment xheat

Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song

Since 2012 (including 2012. yes. really!!!) almost* every Norwegian Song was in my top 10, most of them even top 5. they don’t disappoint again. Glad they do because I love Scandinavia, Norway especially (been there a few times) since I was a little child. Rybak is my all-time favourite ESC winner, so yes, I am biased, but fortunately I like the song too, otherwise I couldn‘t support it. Lykke til, Alex. You have my votes! ;-)

* only Agnete wasn‘t :‘-( I‘m sorry
