Re: NORWAY 2018 - Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write A Song
Our MGP-final for 2018 is over and we have a winner.
First let me say that I enjoyed the Show, well produced/run I thought and with a cool opening number (Norwegian MPG music homage) and beautiful interval act (Karoline Krüger/Anita Skorgan)
As for the songs, I thought the general standard was pretty good this year, very few truly awful songs (only one I thought was utter crap was the one by Vidar Villa) but I also missed the 'vow'-song'.
My personal favourites (in order of preference):
1. Stella & Alexandra (cool energetic mix of 'La Det Swinge' meets modern rhytms and rap, great performance, my nr 1)
2. Rebecca (very nice power-ballad, quite well performed I thought)
3. Alejandro Fuentes (cool piece of Reggaeton, groovy I thought)
3. Alexander Rybak (great stage-presence, infectious enthusiasm and cool stage-show, song ok but kinda average imo)
Final result and some reflections:
I knew the ballad by Rebecca would go far in our final since Norwegians (as I tend to comment here each year) often embrace ballads (if decently performed) in MGP. We are in many ways a nation of ballad-lovers. I also expected Alexander Rybak to do well since he is still very popular here. Also I guessed (correctly) that Alejandro Fuentes’ Reggaeton-song would
not get a lot of votes; that kind of music is not that well known/popular (unfortunately imo) in Norway. As for the rest, it was fairly open in my view with several dance-pop entries that might get some points. We also had the International juries which made things even more interesting.
In the end, Alexander Rybak won. Congrats Alexander!
I have always been a fan of him, but personally I would have preferred an other winner (as my list above shows) because I prefer Alexander Rybak’s folk-pop songs (in the style of ‘Fairytale’) best. He is however a great entertainer and stage-presence, had a cool/good stage-show I thought, and has an infectious ‘charisma’ and famous 'face' which may give Norway quite a few points in Lisbon, even for a song I personally think is ok but kinda average (I like the energy of the song but the pop-jazz element is just not my thing really).
Looking forward to ESC 2018 - Lykke til, Good luck, Alexander and
Norway in Lisbon in May!
