When this won last night, I thought that I really needed to have a rest first before I listened again and gave an opinion. I was kind of exhausted after suffering through what I thought were really bad/disappointing picks made from other countries (excluding Slovenia which I don't mind). Furthermore Lithuania knocked out my favourite song of the entire NF season. I was mildly irked to say the least. Eurovision 2018 was already looking really grim for me, and then it got even grimmer...
Then Hungary gives us this band. Their kind of rock is so far away from the stuff I usually listen to. I'm really heavy into my garage rock stuff, psych rock, slacker and ambient alternative. I love loud and fuzzy rock but I don't usually step on over into the world of metal and all it's various sub genres. Closest I get I suppose is grunge and maybe my The Distillers obsession from when I was a child. But seeing a song like "Viszlát nyár" was in the A Dal final kind of blew my mind. It's humongous. It's fierce. It makes absolutely no apologies for what it is and just the fact that this is going to be at Eurovision and have some fans razzled and exasperated by it's existence for the next few months has me living.
Their lead singer Örs has the most awe-inspiring voice and the way he performs is formidable. I wasn't expecting something like "Viszlát nyár" at this years contest, and furthermore I don't think I could have imagined being this much on board and pumped for the song. It probably won't be for me quite the same pant wetting levels as when Young Georgian Lolitaz went to Eurovision as they were basically my style 110% (my body is still recovering from 2016) but damn, i'm so excited AWS are going to Lisbon. I could count on one hand the rock songs sent to Eurovision that I like and actually respect. Now I might have to consider getting another hand. It's doing absolutely everything right. It's easily my favourite metal track we've had at the contest until now by a gazillion miles. What it delivers in those three minutes is prodigious and unrivaled. This entry is going to be so gosh darn fricking awesome on that stage in May. Whatever happens, it's something that's impossible to ignore. Whether positive or negative, people will have an opinion. Strong reactions are inevitable. I honestly think that people will love this, and it's going to be the highlight of the contest for many. I'm gonna get my.....
*checks wiki*......... post hardcore metal on and cheer for AWS.
12 FAT gnarly points for Hungary and AWS. Hopefully those points go some way in helping you forgive me Hungary for the five years of shade, prior to Joci Pápai's participation.
And commencing Örs Siklósi fandom!
