Re: GERMANY 2013

But do you really consider them big in general? What I meant is that they are sort of has-beens now so they have nothing to loose to enter, sort of like Blue aswell.

A big name for ESC was a bit of a clue

It seems that as soon someone that had some slight career enters then they are automatically considered 'big names'. It's a bit weird imo.

I think you underestimate Cascada's international Status. Heck, they even entered the US Top 10 once and had several other hits here known by most folks. So yes, you can definitely consider them a "big name". I don't know what you would consider big names but this is pretty much as big as it gets for the German Music Market.

Well, I think that Cascada's definitely one of German TOP 5 bands in terms of popularity. Actually, I can only think of 2 bands that are more internationally popular: Rammstein and Tokio Hotel.

They had two hits, and they haven't had hits in years. I consider them less big than Blue, which I also consider a has-been act.

Look, I'm indifferent to them as a group so it's not as if I hate them or anything, but I still think it's kinda funny how people talk about them as this big act that take a risk entering (which was the initial comment I reacted to) when in fact their successful part of their career is over.

Do people care about Cascada these days? No, they had two hits and the last one was like 5 years ago.

German artists have difficulty cross-over in general. There are many local acts FAR more popular than Cascada ever were. Maybe their random 2 hits in Europe and other markets make them look like this big thing or something I dunno.

But if you stop thinking in terms of sales (which is a very clinical way of looking at it) and in terms of recognition, you would find that more people have heard of Cascada than most other German acts you could care to mention

I think so. After all, their last single "Summer Of Love" charted in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and UK. It didn't reach top 5, but it still charted.

Yeah, but the key word is local. I'm not saying that they are the most popular band, not at all, but I'm saying that they're one of the most internationally known German bands. xshrug

Evacuate the dancefloor was released in 2009, that wasn't too long ago. And they had mor than just 2 hits.

Miracle (
Everytime we touch
Truly Madly Deeply
What hurts the most
Evacuate the dancefloor
Pyromania
Summer of love

etc

That's the whole thing, they aren't a big-seller act. Because of their two international hits (one a cover) they are perhaps more known to the international public, but if you really take a look at the German market then there are without a doubt much more successful acts sales-wise so it's interesting that Cascada would be the top. 3 most popular German acts? That's an odd statement imo. Just because you had some cross-over hits doesn't make you the most popular act if many other acts actually sells more than you do.

A charted single is not the same as a hit single.

I totally got what you mean, and yeah if we look at it that way it may be true, but not because their career NOW is doing much though.

Ok, almost 5 years then (in 2013 it'll be 4 years since 'Evacuate').

Well, I'm not denying that some of those songs have charted here and there, but if we focus on the ones that actually were international hits and had some impact it leaves us with 'Everytime' (a cover) and 'Evacuate'. Oh and apparently 'What Hurts The Most' aswell (yet another cover):

Although they might be known they don't really have something what you would call a loyal fanbase, otherwise people would also buy their albums for instance. It is to expect that their fame alone will not do much in terms of Eurovision success. If the song was bad/un-appealing they would fail like everyone else would, as it happened with Kate Ryan.

Re: GERMANY 2013

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Cascada fan. Actually the only song I thought was good is their original "Evacuate the dancefloor" and I despise all of their cover versions. It seems they always end up making them sound worse. And I don't think that their "Big Name" status will give them a major advantage in February but if they end up representing Germany their name recognition will probabaly some attention. Kinda with that attitude "Oh, I remember them. I loved their song back then" blah blah blah

This! I've been trying to point this out. Cascada had 3 somewhat international hits, two of them were covers. They don't really have a 'fanbase' as they are a type of act which just get randomly hits, and again mostly because they make covers of already known songs.

Their album sales are pretty dreadful. They had decent album sales in the UK for some reasons, but other than that not that successful.

I think the resemblance to Kate Ryan is quite good. They're both Eurodance act that had some random hits here and there that were covers in most of the cases, but none of this transforms into album sales since what they've done is nothing special and has been done by plenty of acts before and after them.

I don't hate them or love them, I'm totally indifferent as I find them a non-event tbh. But it seems people hype them as this 'big act', I do agree though with what you say... same goes for Kate Ryan and Blue for instance.

But I find it a bit amusing when I read comments like 'they are big, they take a risk entering'. No they're not risking anything as they have no consistent career, their last hit will have been 4 years ago in 2013... what exactly are they risking?

Kate Ryan never charted in the UK or US so you can hardly compare those two acts from that perspective.

In Eurovision, the UK (market) is not any more important than other countries' music scenes. And the US playeth no role at all.

The USA doesn't vote in Eurovision though

I talk from a European perspective, which of course includes the UK, but also the rest of the competing countries and different markets. As we know each country have equal say in this, so Cascada being quite successful in the UK has the same worth as Kate Ryan having some success in for instance Russia.

If I just talk based on my own country, I'd say both of them were pretty much equally successful. Perhaps Cascada a bit more but not that much.
