"#France have brought a simple but incredibly effective performance with a lot of audience shots" Eurovoix on Twitter.

Matt has a point when he says that maybe the message is not properly delivered.
I wouldn't know what they are singing about if I had not read a translation of the lyrics and some background information.
People who are seeing this only one time at the evening of the final might not understand it if they do not speak French.

How could have they conveyed it better? :(

people are not disappointed but they just said it's maybe too simple, there's nothing happening and the message is not coming across.

did they expect Madame to make some acrobatics, while Monsieur was dressed as a clown?

The one thing that can elevate this performance will happen only with a live audience: when MM do that hand thing replicated by hundreds of people.

Both Germany and Italy made more of an effort to get the message across.

LED screens and subtitles on the screen for both of them, of course they conveyed it way better than France did. However, what do people expect? They won't write the story of Mercy beside the face of MM.

Exactly. I was gonna compare it to Italy, since they have a similar theme/message. Italy managed to convey their message and got an organic reaction from the press room. France didn't. It felt cold.

An LED background would have helped tremendously to tell the story. It would be more a matter of conveying the general theme than personal details.

I was sure you'll be disappointed. Italy did convey their message ten times better, just a fact. Staging never been France's forte.

i'm disappointed by all of the reactions from fans and other people, not by the performance. they'll have some time to correct and adjust a bunch of things that they didn't get right. Anyway, they still did better than Alma and Amir.

An LED background would have helped tremendously to tell the story. It would be more a matter of conveying the general theme than personal details.

I can't manage to figure out how the staging would've been done though.

France won the press poll for the automatic qualifiers so I don't think people can have been that disappointed with the performance.

It's simple which is what people wanted. No dizzying shots of Paris or odd collection it choices. I'm glad MM have gone with this staging; it's the most appropriate choice to fit the song.

People are comparing it to Portugal last year. But is it really convening the message or emotion? I'm not sure.

Anecdotally speaking here, but I put it on for my parents (who don't know much French...) they thought it was pretty boring and it had zero effect on them. I then put it on a couple of weeks later (I always show them the favourites and get their opinions), but this time with the English translations. They now think it should win and is the best song in the competition.

If everyone knew the message of the song, then I'd be confident saying its a winner. But I'm just not sure they will, and I don't get overwhelmed with emotion or a "wow" like many did from Salvador, and personally like I got from Estonia this year the first time I heard it.
