Re: CYPRUS 2013

Although I like her song "Anantikatastatos", I wouldn't like her to go with a song like that, to make an Eleftheria #2!

Haven't heard about her before, I checked up this song you mention...

I thought it sounded familiar...

Maria

Polina

... anyways, this Polina girl could be a good choice. I hope atleast one out of Cyprus or Greece will bring the Greek language back to the ESC stage next year. Something like actual Modern Laika would fit this Polina girl's voice well, and I don't mean the milked down stuff we got from Eleftheria (which was a Swedish song anyways) or Paparizou, but more something like Kokkinou's 'Ki Allo' , 'Sex' or Vandi's 'Jamba' & 'Kalanta'... I'm dying to get something like that in ESC! No Pop-schlager compromises, more like 'hardcore' ethno-pop - the real deal thank u!

Re: CYPRUS 2013

Who is this Nikki people talk about? The potential artist?

Nikki Ponte. She was in the Greek NF 2011.

(I posted the studio version coz the live sucked a bit and oh those dancers' costumes. Apart from that, my favourite last year! xrofl2)

@A-Lister: Seriously, these songs you mentioned of Elli Kokkinou and Despina Vandi is what you call nice modern laika? I'd prefer my country to withdraw rather than sending such a song. "Anantikatastatos" of Polina is a nice song, I like it, but if they go with this style, I'm sure they'll choose something really cheap pseudo-ethnic Swedish production.

----------------------

Nikki Ponte can sing live, and she's a good performer overall:
(skip it to 1:30)
If she is given the right song of course... "I Don't Wanna Dance" was a very difficult song to be performed live, just like "La La Love" was... xshrug
I don't mean to give her a ballad, but a song that can be performed live, that doesn't have key changes etc.

I think something in this style would suit her more:

And Ivi can sing live too, again if she is given a song in her style. I'd prefer her with a teen-pop or jazzy-pop song instead. Like this one:

Well, according to the Greek Music source I found... under the genre 'Modern laika' that's the type of music you get :) Well, then I hope you withdraw then

I'm bored of the pseudo- Swedish ethno-schlager-pop stuff aswell however, but none of the examples I gave are like that. The stuff I mentioned are more like Greek turbo-folk, more like the real deal imo, and we still haven't got anything like that in ESC :( I know you prefer the more 'non-Greek' sound however, but to a non-Greek the milked down Europop in English is a total bore now (and don't get me start on Disney ballads in English!!!)...

I like some turbo-folk, and some modern laika in this regard too. But the songs you mentioned are the cheapest songs ever. Ki Allo and Sex of Elli Kokkinou, no comment! Jumbi and Kalanta of Vandi, well no comment... :?

While I do like songs of Kokkinou and Vandi like these ones:

So, you wouldn't call me a laiko-music hater at all. I enjoy songs of this genre too!

What I meant is that if they go for something like this, they will end up with a Swedish pseudo ethnic, like Aphrodisiac, I'm almost sure.

On the other hand, with Nikki Ponte don't expect something in Greek, no way. First of all, she doesn't speak good Greek, and she hardly ever sings in Greek. And with her, I think they'd go with a song like the ones of her I mentioned above. Btw, "Remembering the summer nights" was composed by Thomas G:Son and Marcus Englof (R.I.P.)! That doesn't necessarily mean that if she's chosen, Swedes will write the song. There are producers of dance music in Greece too, and they are very good, like Playmen, OtherView, etc... But personally, I don't care who will write the song, as long as the song is good! :p

Hmm, I actually think the clips you posted here are more 'typical' of what we've heard in ESC than the ones I mentioned tbh.

Well, the whole point is that I want something more pure Greek ethno (turbo) folk and NOT something Swedish pseudo!

Why doesn't Nikki speak Greek? Well, that's even worse, it seems she'll go with something typically Swedish dance-pop then... I didn't like her entry the other year at all, well I could live with another 'la la love' type of entry... oh well we'll see xshrug.

To be honest I think I dont wanna dance is better than La la love, and I loved la la love! Wouldn't mind seeing Nikki representing either Greece or Cyprus!

Re: CYPRUS 2013

What about a song like this? This song won the Cypriot Song Composition Contest 2012!

(Btw, the video is from the live version of the song, but in the audio I put the studio version because the sound quality wasn't good)

Hmm, a bit too monotone/repeating imo I'm afraid.

For some reason, when it comes to Greek ethno inspired music I much prefer the uptempo over ballads (or maybe I just wasn't exposed to a great Greek ethno-ballad yet) ... I dunno xshrug

Hmm, not bad but it sounds quite repeating.

That song is zeibekiko, btw. Like Loucas' entry in 2011.

I love Greek ethno-ballads. Probably my favorite music genre ever! I think no other genre can touch me more than these songs!

A nice Greek ethno-ballad (yes, you read the name also well)

And this is one of my favorite songs ever:

I really liked Loucas' bits in the 2011 entry but the rap destroyed it all for me :( A similar entry like that, but with sung verses would be a nice thing.

Edit: I liked the Eleftheria one, the other isn't too bad either.

I think my concern is the lack of climax, the singing is very hmm mellow... it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can come across as a bit of sleepy after 3 minutes. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for some over-sung wailed power ballads... I like the subtle, but there's still something lacking.

Re: CYPRUS 2013

As there's a fuss around Giorgos Papadopoulos, here is a song of him that I'd like to see something similar in ESC if he is chosen:

I wouldn't like a pop-rock mid-tempo song from him like some hits he has had. This will be boring and meh for ESC.

Re: CYPRUS 2013

If we need something "modern", then I don't think we have to look for foreign producers. We have Cyprus-based composers and producers that can write good songs too. Example of a 100% Cypriot-production of a song with international appealing:

Re: CYPRUS 2013

According to CyBC Chairman of the Board Mr Makis Symeou the country may pull out of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest due to the financial crisis the country faces.
In an interview with local newspaper Fileleftheros today, Mr Symeou states that participation in the Eurovision Song Contest has been a profitable project for the Cypriot broadcaster so far. Since Cyprus became the fourth country to strike a bailout deal with IMF CyBC officials fear that taking part in the contest might provoke negative reactions so a meeting will be held next week to determine whether the Cypriot flag will be flown in Malmö.
