Eugh. Im sick of this constant expansion? Kazakhstan isn't even in europe? How can it be eurovision when they let countries who are not in Europe participate.
Eurovision is actually the name of the technology the EBU uses to broadcast to different nations at one time, many athletic and other sports-related programmes use it, not just the Song Contest. Eurovision does not mean Europe and it is called the Eurovision Song Contest because of the technology used to broadcast the contest, not that only countries from Europe compete through song.

True.

And I think it's up to countries to choose if they are Asian or European.

Actually, Kazakhstan is partly within the geographical continent (which some countries taking part now aren't even), and the EBU rules for ESC participation so far doesn't limit the contest to geographical Europe (hence why we have countries that aren't even partly within the continent taking part already).

I do agree though that there should be put a further block of non-European expansion, but since Kazakhstan partly lies within the continent's border, I'd say it would be hypocritical to say no to them and in the meantime accept others that aren't even having a geographical European part.

Atleast the borderline cases that lies within both continents... and Kazakhstan is one of them.

However, why are people discussing Kazakhstan? It's not as if they've been accepted into the EBU yet (not that I'm aware of atleast).

ok, my mistake. It is in Europe but only a ridiculously small amount compared to the rest of the country. And i agree, a block should be put in on further expansion of non-european countries.

I'm neutral at the "Kazakhstan in Eurovision" topic.
But ...
If they join at the contest and constantly send Swedish-made songs like Azerbaijan does, everybody will be against them and will say: "WE DON'T WANT KAZAKHSTAN IN EUROVISION! THEY'RE KILLING THE CONTEST! THEY'RE NOT EUROPEANS! Blablablablabla" and **** ._.

Even if it is the name of the technology, there's a reason why they named it EUROvision. Anyway, I don't mind Kazhakstan entering.

I don't undestand how Kazakhstan can even get membership in EBU. Kazakhstan is not inside the European broadcasting area and it's not member of Council of Europe.

Well, the same can be said about Turkey, and definitely about Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Israel aswell right?

But yeah, I think there should be put a block on further non-geographical European expansion, as it is now even Qatar and Iraq could potentially enter, which is just ridiculous.

Kazakhstan has currently upgraded their broadcasting technical system, I'm pretty sure it could soon be within the EBU area (which btw seems rather old and not updated on EBU's page, but I think these days it's stretches further than what's shown on their old map).

I agree! I never agreed with the current EBU rules about entering Eurovision, I think it should be a European music contest, like I just wrote the whole idea about Iraq, Egypt, Qatar etc. entering is just ridiculous.

I don't think Kazakhstan would pull off a "Azerbaijan", but one can never be too sure... I mean seems more or less every second country sends Swedish stuff now (even when they have an enough big market on their own).

You can't see the injustice in this rule. Ireland, United Kingdom and some others will be able to join with English which all Europe can understand them. Scandiniavian countries will make understand each other. I am not sure about Balkan languages but maybe they can make understand each other, too. To the rest, they just sing by themselves and lose votes. Language rule makes even more neighboor voting. I am against to language rule but only if EBU may make a rule like "Every country must use their official laguage atleast for a verse." The rest of that rule is just disaster.

All of Europe does NOT understand English!!! English is "popular" because of its massive exposure, but not because everyone actually understands it...

Still, the contribution of more neighboor votes fact is valid, and others.

Those are valid even when the countries cited send an entry in English. Native languages wouldn't change that.
