I really wonder what RAI would have done if Italy actually won this stuff. They said they didn't wanna organize the next contest.

That's why they sent a song which had no chance to win this year and they were almost going to win xrofl3 I don't think they'll take that risk again!

First of all - we never violate human rights.

hmm... Not going within the political issue - but even staying with the contest, I read that in edition of 2009, the 30 people living in Azerbaijian that voted for the Armenian song were located with the help of the phone company and interrogated by the Ministry for National Security as "state enemies" and "danger for national security".
What is your opinion on that?

If we won, I think we would have probably given up partecipating, in order to avoid the expense of organization. The reason why we did not partecipate in the last years was merely financial: the cost of partecipating (let alone organizing) has always been considered too high compared to the meagre audience that the ESC has always had here in Italy - and still has, looking at the poor results of audience in this edition, too.
For which I think there are three reasons:

1- most Italians don't understand English language, at least not to the point of understanding the words of a song. For them, the show is boring, because they don't understand the words, they see a presenter on stage but not understand what he says, and the off-stage voice is a sure "change channel" thing

2- the Italian audience is much divided between the "rockphiles", who listen to international rock, know English, et c., and the "pop-philes", who don't understand English, and only listen to local pop stars (plus the occasional Shakira or Gaga).

3- the kind of music that goes strong in Eurovision contest (the dance-pop) is really weak at Italian audience - we don't like it, radios don't cast it, it just doesn't work here.

From the RAI point of view, there is no point in spending millions for a show, when with a talk show that costs nothing (political, or about a murder) they can make double or triple the audience at a fraction of the cost.

And this is not true of Eurovision only. All live shows (Sanremo, Miss Italia) are going worse and worse in terms of audience.
Which might be a good sign, actually (if people starts liking political debates more than pop shows).

I don't think it is when most Italian channels are controlled by Berlusconi, but that's another debate.

I'd be very disappointed to see Italy withdraw :-(, I was so happy to see them back this year!

I guess San Marino may withdraw, Azerbaijan is another budget entirely than nearby Düsseldorf. I don't see Liechtenstein debuting in Baku either, or Czech Republic returning. Will Slovakia participate? IIRC they came to Düsseldorf more because of their EBU obligations than out of true willingness.

People are less bitter or unhappy with the final result because they already know people loved their songs enough to get it into the final.

Just poppin in to tell you this is sadly not true at all. At least for :at:... 18th/43 equals finishing in the upper half of the field yet people call ORF to withdraw because of the evil east. xafro

anyway to be on-topic, I think :pl: and :am: are the most dangerous cases for obvious reasons... though I believe a representative of TVP said they had "plans for ESC 2012". :)

What are the obvious reasons that'd make Poland withdraw? Does TVP have financial problems?

^ In last 7 years, they could only reach the final once. It might be a reason?

After this year, when they send a great song and made great performance and didn't qualify to final, I can understand them :(

Well maybe they shouldn't have been stupid and chosen a better position in the draw. I couldn't believe it when they decided to stay at n°1 when they had the wildcard and could've chosen a much better place. Their bad luck was made worse by the fact that the six first songs of SF1 were up-tempo, making "Jestem" undistinguishable from the rest (this is what contributed to Norway's failure too IMO).
