Maybe Portugal withdraw?
In 2010, Portugal was the first country to confirm the public broadcaster’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. But this year everything’s different: The country has a new Prime-Minister with a daunting programme, agreed with the EU and the IMF, that requires his government to cut the budget deficit from 9 per cent of gross domestic product last year to 3 per cent in 2013 and to implement structural reforms that no previous government has attempted. Not content with this challenge, the new Prime-Minister, Mr. Pedro Passos Coelho, aims to go beyond the requirements of the rescue agreement, promising, for example, to accelerate and expand the privatization programme. The Public Broadcaster RTP is to be sold off, leaving only one non-commercial public service channel – he confirmed earlier this afternoon to “Financial Times”.
A source from RTP told oikotimes.com that it’s almost certain that the new government will hire a new administration for the company. The future President of RTP will have as main mission to prepare the sale of the broadcaster. It’s unknown whether the rights to broadcast the Eurovision will be transferred to the future privatized channel or if, on the other hand, keeps on the single public channel. Until then, the question is whether in the midst of such a fundamental decision for RTP, it will remain available time to think about the Eurovision Song Contest…
Let’s wait to see what will happen…
